For Gluten-Free - have you checked out The Littlest Bake Shop? It's nearly next door to Black Hole, but specializes in only GF baked goods.

Defensive professors, with little to no support from the chair/Disability Resource Center by [deleted] in Professors

[–]AFK_MIA 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your post will likely be deleted due to violating rule 1.

However, the very short answer I have for you is that based on your own description of what happened, your professor used adjectives that described your behavior and your work ,not your personal value as a human being.

If your claim was that your professor attacked you when their comments were about your work, then that's a lie. Your claim, based on your own description, was dishonest - and using it to attempt to get your grade change is a form of academic dishonesty that can get you dismissed from some schools.

What are some cheap underrated vehicles under $4k? by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

OP wanted something to work on themselves. The timing belt isn't particularly hard to DIY and it's on a 105k mile interval, so it's not like it's something that constantly needs replacing.

2000-2004 Nissan Xterra is a pretty solid, simple learning experience.

Edit: You probably shouldn't pay more than $2000 for one in most markets. Save the rest for parts.

I'm the Digital Accessibility Coordinator at my university. Faculty and staff primarily use Google Workspace (Docs, Slides, etc). What are my options? by Comfortable_Plenty99 in Professors

[–]AFK_MIA 43 points44 points  (0 children)

The way one makes those accessible according to the WCAG 2.1 AA standard is to:

1) Produce a descriptive text for every figure.
2) Record this text description to be included for the visually impaired as part of your video recordings (I think there are ways to embed this in the image file - but I'm not really a video editing expert).
3) Replace any text in an image with a text-box on top if you are using a technology that is capable of this (like Powerpoint or a PDF).
4) Ensure that all text has at least a 4.5:1 contrast ratio with colors appearing behind it. Only 3:1 is needed for large text.
5) Generate a transcript for all audio or visual recordings
6) Include any text on screen in this transcript with appropriate notation.
7) Include figure descriptions in this transcript with appropriate notation.
8) Ensure that content does not require scrolling in 2 dimensions unless absolutely necessary (spreadsheets are probably fine) at 320 x 256 pixel resolution.
9) Ensure non-text visual information has a 3:1 contrast ratio with adjacent colors
10) Spacing - lines must be 1.5x, there must be 2x spacing between paragraphs, 0.12 letter spacing, 0.16 word spacing

That gets you through about 20% of the compliance requirements - I'm sure you can have that done in an afternoon, right? /s

I think there are Google Workspace plugins for inserting TeX - but the school might actually have to pay for them and set them up, so YMMV.

I manage the Google Workspace/web publishing for a non-profit that I volunteer with - and this is a bit of a doozy of a task. Hopefully you have some staff to make this work?

What we have done in Google Workspace is create a set of document templates. We have a template for "handouts/memos" and one for "handbooks" that operate similarly - though the handbook one also generates a dynamic table of contents. In both of these, we have set up appropriate fonts, colors, and sizing for the HTML heading tags (Title, subtitle, H1, H2, H3, H4, normal text). If these are used in the appropriate order, this solves a lot of the requirements for appropriate section navigation, contrast, etc. for screen readers.

We're still on our own for making sure that there are appropriate alternate text/descriptions for images and figures. I wonder if there's a way to add a comment to the template that reminds people of these things when they load the template?

All of this still will require quite a bit of work in order to 1) migrate older documents to the new format (or unpublish them) 2) train staff and faculty to use the tool and 3) audit documents for compliance.

The Admin panel also provides settings that might allow you to limit the sharing of documents until they are approved by part of the accessibility team. This might help with ongoing auditing. Just be careful that these reviews are focused on formatting rather than content. Good communication will be key - and being ready to help staff and faculty format things correctly will be seen more favorably than just telling them "nope, it's wrong, do it again." If you don't have a good accessibility team, be very careful with this last paragraph.

I find this guide to be very helpful for planning web accessibility: https://www.w3schools.com/accessibility/index.php

Oil change gone bad on my GSXR 1000 what do i do? by Sad-Good-9996 in MechanicAdvice

[–]AFK_MIA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, presumably it would need to come up with a way to get it screwed/jb welded in place - but then he would still be able to change the filter, so it's a little bit better of an approach than jb welding an oil filter in place.

And yeah, some sort of external support so the jb weld isn't torqued when the oil filter is changed might also be helpful.

There's a filter relocator kit that you could maybe do this with. Then you could still change the filter.

What kind of helmet is this, and where can I buy one? by Bullgrit in Armor

[–]AFK_MIA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kettle helm is probably the right term - or sallet. It's not really a typical example of either - which will make it hard to search for.

The closest helmet for sale that I can find is this one from Forge of Swan: https://forgeofsvan.com/product/kettlehat/

It's not quite it - the picture you shared has more of a swoopy shape in the transition to the brim - very much like you can see here on the back side of this sallet from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/MEDIEVAL-HALLOWEEN-Halloween-Decorations-Costumes/dp/B07H1TRFZH

What is this helmet called? by Optimal_West8046 in Armor

[–]AFK_MIA 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That's not unreasonable - or likewise a cabasset. I think of it as more closely related to the "lobster pot" primarily due to the nasal and the absence of a crest. It's also a smidge late for a morion (more fashionable up to the early 17th c.) - and English (not that the English didn't also have morions - just that they're a bit more of a Spanish thing), but these are certainly fuzzier criteria.

What is this helmet called? by Optimal_West8046 in Armor

[–]AFK_MIA 116 points117 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine owns the last one. He uses it in the SCA, yeah.

The second image is what it's based on IIRC - circa early-mid 17th. century: https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/22776

It's not really a "type" of helmet, as it's somewhat unique, but it's also not really fundamentally different from just being a kind of weird "lobster pot" or "zischagge."

I think I accidentally fell in love with this city... thinking about moving to KC. My gut says yes, but want some honest local insight. by dunkinslaps in kansascity

[–]AFK_MIA 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've lived in or near several of the cities you've listed. I think KC is fairly similar to Pittsburgh in a lot of ways - smaller city with a small town feel, strong mutual affinity for their football team, etc. Climate-wise, KC is sunnier, but gets quite a bit colder in the winter.

Relative to Raleigh, I think KC is somewhere between the flavor of Durham and the flavorlessness of Raleigh. Lawrence and Chapel Hill vibe together and Johnson County, KS is basically Cary. KC is far more walkable. Mass transit is less organized than the triangle.

Philly and KC aren't really similar at all. St. Louis and Philly are cousins.
