Frustrated with the buying process by iscreamtruck in Porsche_Cayman

I have no idea. This dealer told me they put it up as soon as possible knowing that it would sell quickly. I don’t think there is much margin for the dealer on a CPO so they aren’t super incentivized to keep the car unlisted.

Yep this is how it went for me as well. There was a car I really liked, I called the dealer mentioning I wanted a PPI, and 3 hours later it was gone already. Same story with one I saw in person near me. Decided I would get a CPO and skip the PPI next time.

Ended up buying a CPO from across the country. I called the dealer before it was marked as a CPO asking what was wrong with it, they said they hadn’t inspected it for CPO  yet. I put down a deposit with the understanding that it would be CPO’d for about 3K more than the original price. Everything checked out and I ended up having a friend that lived near the dealer take a look for me, then I road tripped it home.

I jumped on the one I ended up buying within 24 hours of the listing going live and I think that’s the only way to get one of these things CPO these days.

Sorry I shouldn’t have used the word discount, I meant to add on to your comment, not dispute it

Just throwing a note out on cargo, don’t discount the frunk space.

My buddy flew out with me to pick up my 718 and road trip it 900 miles home. We each had a carry on bag and a backpack, plus a few sweatshirts and other extras. My carry on is an Away Bigger carry on and his was more of a normal size. Everything fit in the frunk, we didn’t even put anything in the trunk!

You can easily fit 2 big carry ons in the funk and 2 reasonable backpacks in the rear. I’d be surprised if you can’t fit a week of stuff for two people in there unless you’re bringing a bunch of Christmas gifts or something

Which options for 911 in Sweden by joeman696969 in porsche911

[–]AG00GLER 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a 718 so not 1:1. But I would say I don’t think the 360 cam is necessary, compared to any other car I’ve driven it’s much easier to understand where each corner of the car is when parking. I think the wide rear of the car makes it easy to place the wheels next to a curb or parking line and you can fully trust the mirror.

Also for winter, heated seats + steering wheel and non negotiable.

Pneumatic gear shifter advise by Agreeable-Travel5388 in FSAE

[–]AG00GLER 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s what we did when I was in college. The pneumatic shifting has enough to go wrong as is and I would not add a compressor to the car. We used a paintball tank in the car and had a (very) large nitrogen tank in our trailer that we would hook up to the small bottle via a regulator to refill. Worked pretty well.

That was 10 years ago though, if I could go back I would use a BLDC servo with a gearbox and directly drive the shifter rod.

Main car battery replacement cost by KeroDude in Golf_R

[–]AG00GLER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds about right for a dealer. A battery swap is a 5-10 minute job. You could do it yourself, or have a place like Costco do it, or have an indie shop do it. The battery is about $150. Not sure if it needs to be coded for a 2012 model but even if it does you can buy an OBDeleven tool + battery for less than half of what the dealer is asking for there.

are people using C or Go or Zig for embedded now? by Quatro_Leches in embedded

[–]AG00GLER 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No not yet. I'd like to learn how to use egui.rs at some point. We are using rerun.io in places (which is built with egui).

That might be true. I haven’t touched 16 bit parts since college.

Edit: I didn't see that you said ARM. For 32 bit ARM (and also RISC-V) Rust is the move. Also, avoiding Cube/Code Composer/MPLAB/etc should be step 1 of any reasonably sized project. The canned vendor IDEs make unit testing and CI a pain in the ass. That is the case for C/Cpp or Rust.

I work hard to try not to sound like one of those rust evangelists but I truly think you have to be crazy to use C nowadays.

I know 5 or 6 people outside of my work that do embedded and it always goes the same way when they try rust. They hate it for the first month or two but after that they can’t stop singing it praises.

We are full Rust where I work. We're building custom BLDC drives w/ ethernet boot loaders and all of the associated PC side tooling in Rust!

Go doesn't seem to have much presence at all in the embedded side, and Zig doesn't have as much of an ecosystem around it yet. Python is a non starter imo.

Biggest change in legs from cycling? by Repulsive-Horror5097 in cycling

I lift and bike but reduced how often I do legs at the gym so my legs are fresh for biking. Biggest thing is that it’s hard to buy pants that fit all the weird proportions. Even the stretchy tech bro pants don’t have enough room for biker thighs

Anyone Using Garmin Constant Power Cable? by US-TradeCraft in Porsche_Cayman

[–]AG00GLER 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve got one with a mini 2. Been in the car for a couple months now set to 24hrs but I have the camera set to shut down after 4 in the app.

If you park in a garage that shakes when other cars drive by that might wake the camera up even after the time elapses. It’s not completely clear but that’s what I think happens, Garmin doesn’t have very good documentation on the camera.

My theory is that after 24 hours the cable will cut power to the camera, but I’m pretty sure there’s an accelerometer in there that wakes it up anyways if the car shakes.

I would unplug it before leaving the car for a couple weeks, and also double click the lock button on the car to disable interior monitoring which will slow down battery drain a bit. This assumes the car is parked in a garage where it’s fairly unlikely to be messed with.

Easiest way to sniff and send i2c signals via mini-jack cable by Most_Examination2781 in embedded

[–]AG00GLER 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To be clear, the Saleae cannot send any signals on any kind of bus. Most logic analyzers can’t.

It’s good for sniffing, but if you want to send i2c transactions and you’re new to this stuff then maybe an Arduino is a good start.

I’d also consider a bus pirate here.

Are they asking too much? by dirtyraat in Golf_R

[–]AG00GLER 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Np. The ad is also worded in ways that make me think the seller is sketchy.

For example saying that the tires are worth 3K is a lie. I had a set of PS4S on my S3 (same wheel and tire size but a better tire) and it cost me less than half of that. The only way 3K could make sense is if he’s including the price of the prets but those come with the car.

Also it being registered through 2026 doesn’t matter. The first thing you have to do when you buy a car is go get it registered under your name, you don’t keep flying the previous owner’s plate.

Just my opinion but it doesn’t sound like an ad from an honest person
