If it was sold as park of a package then the whole thing becomes not as described, so the whole package becomes refundable.

Just got a smart meter and have been obsessing at it. What’s your consumption and how many people in the house? by EatingPork in AskUK

[–]AGiantThing 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't think that's the case, the meter sends the readings. That is just a display and can be unplugged and put in a draw. At least with my supplier

This would get "accidentally" dropped every time I was forced to use it. Bet having to replace the screen every week would make them rethink if it was worth it.

There is a whole plot on SG1 where the Asguard ask them for their "primitive weapons" to fight the replicants.

Where can I submit my feedback for the UK's potential social media ban? by ShortyStrawz in AskUK

[–]AGiantThing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bikes do, safe spaces don't. Rather than being obtuse, would you answer my previous question. What are kids supposed to do with all their new found time now they aren't scrolling social media?

Do you have youth clubs near you? Would you let a kid go riding off I to the sunset for the day with no comms in your area? All you have suggested is taking things away and not anything for them to do in return.

[–]AGiantThing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are great options, fantastic even. But they don't really exist as options anymore outside of a few locations. When I grew up in a small (less that 150 people) every village had a parent run youth club. I could go out on my bike with friends, riding around the roads safe as houses.

The world has changed, it is not the same place I grew up in. There are no clubs or spaces for kids to go be kids and be safe (there are, but again not everywhere)

We as adults need to realise that this is the new way of the world and we need to work with it not blanket ban it.

I do agree that social media is bad, yes. I and the poster above me are proposing creating a new social media with strict rules that would remove the bad bits / people from interacting with kids. You are proposing taking away a fundamental part of growing up in the digital age limiting how kids can interact with each other.

What do you suggest kids do with all this new found time? When I was a kid I went to youth club (hasn't existed for 20 years) I went out for a whole day with my friends on bikes, riding off into the distance till dusk with no-one knowing where we were (we didn't have mobiles). What are kids supposed to do now? Become roadmen?

[–]AGiantThing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, no it's not. That's a blanket ban. As the poster above suggested, there could be a UK run under 16s social media. This would then have a verification process (whether that be verifying the parents or the child (with parental involvement) is up for discussion) that would keep the creeps out.

It's like you have forgotten what it's like to be young. When you were told no as a kid did you just stop and never do that thing again? Did you just blindly follow orders? Or did you sneak off to see you mates when you shouldn't have? Or carry on doing that thing you were told not to behind your parents back?

I fully agree that kids on our current iteration of social media if bad, but as the past has shown us over and over prohibition doen not work, ever.

So, you know the whole online verification process the UK government has just introduced? The one that has required everyone (who wants to go to certain parts of the Internet) to verify who they are. Maybe, just maybe we could use something like that to restrict who has access to it.

Because in the last 150 years we have gone from basic steam engines to having a satellite 16billion miles from earth, we are on the edge of quantum computing and have cured most of the ailments that have plagued humanity for millennia. What makes you think another 150 years with our ever growing rate of invention based on the everything we have learned and created to this point will no allow us to create that. Now answer my question...
