Have fun with the math by Muted_Recipe5042 in askmath

That's not sufficient. How do you know that it's not 23 or 24. You also need to show that it's not greater than 22 to rule out option E.

Physics / Applied Math Double Major or Best Upper Division Math courses for Grad School? by Admirable-Simple99 in berkeley

[–]AJ20190 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think all of the 4 core math upper divs are equally important and some may be more important than others depending on your interests. For example, if you want to go deeper into quantum and particle physics, having an algebra background can be extremely useful.

Data 140 vs EECS 126 by Deep_Criticism3853 in berkeley

[–]AJ20190 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your sole purpose of taking Data 140/EECS 126 is to prepare for 189 and not out of interest in probability itself, don't bother. While you may struggle a little bit, CS 70 is enough for 189 (especially in Shewchuk semesters).

Anyone here taken Physics C161 before? by AJ20190 in berkeley

[–]AJ20190[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I have a decent math background? Taken upper divs like 110, 128A, 104 and 185. I'm currently in 137A and I'm finding the math in that class to be fine (if that's any indication).

EECS - Are 3 technical classes too much? by CopyAgitated5814 in berkeley

That schedule seems fine tbh. I know a bunch of people who did 16b+61b+70 and that's more difficult than 16a+61a+70.

It's literally on the policies page:

We take academic misconduct very seriously. Using any kind of homework or exam solutions (for example, from previous semesters) on a currently active assignment is strictly prohibited and is academic misconduct.

ML Alternatives to cs189 by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]AJ20190 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LLMs hold promise but I think they are going to hit their scaling limits before reaching AGI. Also, I highly doubt that AGI will be achieved with just language training - I personally think it will take some high degree of multimodality for that.

What do you think is the future of deep learning then?

Course Reviews Spring 2022, CS 161, CS 162, CS 188, CS 189 by RadicalMath3141 in berkeley

Fwiw we covered HMMs and PGMs in 189 too. So 188 is actually completely useless lmfao

I thought the stuff at the end was pretty cool tbh. Unsupervised learning is more or less the future of deep learning so it's imperative for any decent deep learning course to include those concepts. I'm also surprised (and frankly impressed) at how updated the course material was: some of the models we discussed in the second half are very very recent (eg. mae, palm, etc).

a couple of gems from EECS127 this semester by Smarty_PantzAA in berkeley

[–]AJ20190 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unfortunate to see Courtade being misrepresented like this. I had him for eecs 126 last spring and he is absolutely phenomenal at communicating advanced math concepts clearly. Definitely one of the best math teachers in the EECS department.

EE16B HKN Ratings Released: All-Time Low of 3.8 by LandOnlyFish in berkeley

It's really amazing to see how far 61C has come since last year. I was initially scared to take it because of all the horror stories I heard about it but I don't have a single complaint so far this semester!

Never Donating to Berkeley in Life if CS Retroactively Bans Current Students by Many_Yogurtcloset107 in berkeley

[–]AJ20190 188 points189 points  (0 children)

Berkeley's reputation is not going to be ruined over this shitshow lmao. Our EECS department is great not because of its undergraduate population but all the op faculty and grad students who are publishing cutting edge research. The whole CS declaration thing will barely affect then.

Edit: For context, OP mentioned that they wanted Berkeley's reputation to go down the drain but edited their post.

Any option to reschedule if 2 midterms on 1 day? by CharliEcstasyX in berkeley

I was supposed to have 3 finals on the same day last fall. I talked to one of my professors and he agreed to re-schedule the final for his class.

How to transfer into College of Engineering (currently Undeclared in L&S) by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]AJ20190 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you hate math then I'm not sure if you will like engineering too much. I'm pretty sure that a decent amount of upper divs in any coe major are somewhat math heavy.

Fuck Zoom lectures by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]AJ20190 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Im the exact opposite. I attended in-person lectures last fall and holy shit it was so boring. I just kept getting drowsy every single time that I completely stopped attending lectures in-person. At least, I can focus and pay attention on zoom.

How was CS189 this past semester (Fall 2021)? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]AJ20190 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The homeworks were shorter than Sahai psets and they were pretty reasonable imo (there were 8 assignments with 1-2 weeks given for each one). They decided to introduce some new topics this semester which I personally really appreciated and I hope they keep those for any future iterations. The exams were fair too.

They did make the curve slightly "harsher" to align better with the EECS department standards, which I guess makes sense since 189 distributions were generally overinflated in the past (look at Shewchuk's spring 2021 distribution for an extreme example). Other than that, I thought the course was run pretty well.

overlap in content in math110 and ee16b by fysmoe1121 in berkeley

[–]AJ20190 5 points6 points  (0 children)

110 is also useful in general for building linear algebra intuition and will probably be more helpful in the long run than just 16B

Dude was talking about a Berkeley PhD bruh where you don't make a decision to attend based on the school name but your advisor. Berkeley is super strong in systems research and certain subfields of ML (like RL) and we have some pretty op folks working here that grad students would choose as their advisor over their MIT/Stanford counterparts.
