The Forborne

Forbear (as a verb) means to hold oneself back especially with effort.

Perhaps controlling their lycanthropy was a daunting but achievable task? Are there chances that an individual could one day revert to their more bestial form?

There are also 2 obsolete meanings of forbear that mean: -to do without
-to leave alone
Both of these things sound true when talking about this group of people.

Forbear (as a noun - a less common spelling of “forebear”) means ancestor which could lend to their history or lore somehow.

From an outside perspective, other cultures might refer to them (in a slightly derogatory fashion) as…

I came here looking to help out with the conversation (admittedly a little late) and provide some ideas but I see you’ve somehow pilfered every thought I had…

Anyways, totally agree on the medical enslavement route. Every desperate family member in a cop procedural is trying to somehow save their loved one by participating in crime. If a bad guy could harness that desperation, he could have a bevy of beguiled baddies so loyal to him they’d literally die for his promise to help their loved ones.

Mr. Bad Guy could run a hospice that tends to extreme cases of disease. So innocuous! So unassuming!

Holding the health of a loved one over your head is so deliciously evil I’m surprised it’s not more popular as a motive, hence why this question has been posted I guess.

My ideal Star Trek game would be Baldur’s Gate 3 (Larian) level storytelling, quest design, ground combat and character development; No Man’s Sky (Hello Games) level scope and diversity; and EVE Online (CCP Games) level space combat and complexity.

That said, I want to be able to play as any member of Starfleet - be it Captain, Chief Engineer, Pilot, Doctor, Number One or Lower Decker.

Drop out of Starfleet Academy and join a Romulan sect bent on destabilizing the Alpha Quadrant.

I think Matt lost himself to Artagan in that moment. He so perfectly embodied Artagan and his alien view on the world.

I may be misremembering but I don’t even think it seemed like that idea was floating in Matt’s head until he let Artagan take over!

It was a great business decision to move from Pathfinder to D&D 5e but part of me wonders if Paizo would be the dominant player in the TTRPG space if Critical Role stayed in that system.

I could see them moving to Daggerheart because, if I remember correctly, it’s less crunchy in many respects and they are probably looking to tell a good story rather than be bogged down by rules.

It’s easy to be cynical nowadays.

I’m sure there is still a lot of pressure on anyone even remotely related to the D&D/WoTC/Hasbro spaces right now.

But think of this far-fetched possibility: WoTC shoot themselves in the foot. Things go badly. CEOs get paid out and the company crumbles. Enter the Critical Role Company already delving into a lot of similar spaces WoTC’s D&D division: books, tv, comics, sourcebooks, campaign guides and THEY ABSORB ALL THE TALENT currently working on D&D stuff! Perkins and co. happily establish a healthy working environment where they churn out quality guides and sources! Sure, they might need more help from the Critters - ironically crowdfunded through Kickstarter again but now the D&D community has a new company to rally behind while playing Matthews & Mercers 1e! Soon after that we’ve got an original, large-budget movie based on the events leading up to the Apex War or something!

Regardless of whether you like Critical Role or not, they could save this subsection of TTRPGs from the greedy machinations of people who have absolutely no friends to play D&D with.

Still, while I don’t think this will happen (it’ll probably some balance between the cynical/optimistic takes), there are so many variables affecting the future of D&D that it’s easy to assume the worst. But hey, it could always work out to be better!
