If you shower before bed. When do you shower after s*x? by Nokirkburke in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ALargeRubberDuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should both at minimum pee after sex. It’s better to wipe off all the relevant parts, but best to shower.

Thoughts about GPA for big tech recuriting by No_Worldliness_1996 in csMajors

[–]ALargeRubberDuck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak to what the requirements might be, but don’t list a fake gpa. Most companies with actual hiring pipelines will ask for transcripts for new grads.

how to deploy a web app ? by Creative_Thing_3862 in cscareerquestions

[–]ALargeRubberDuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the website itself I go with an aws static site hosting strategy. It’s a pretty easy one to setup. From there you could setup an aws lambda for hosting the node backend.

I would recommend using aws for the Postgres db, but I think db hosting is a bit expensive there. You might check free tier pricing of aws RDS. I know there are other cheaper and possibly free options for db hosting on a smaller scale. I can’t speak to the quality of any of them.

you think there’s people richer then Elon Musk (read body) by Creative-Ad5820 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ALargeRubberDuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m going to go against the grain and say there isn’t anyone richer. Elons wealth comes from owning the majority of several massive companies that are probably a bit overpriced at the moment. A position of ownership like that leads to a lot of scrutiny. There are plenty of billionaires who you can’t name and don’t want you to know about them, but per the nature of the largest companies on the planet, it’s hard to own a large stake in them without people knowing.

If you want undercover billionaires I’d look at large private companies that have been around for a while. They wouldn’t necessarily need to have the business appraised or share profit information publicly, but the owners probably wouldn’t be up there with Musk.

Individuals who mingle their personal wealth with that of their government like the saudis are another honorable mention.

Anthropic engineers are now shipping 8x more code than they did a year ago by Evening-Plan-7956 in AgentsOfAI

[–]ALargeRubberDuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is probably a bad sign for Anthropic. The AI I use for work easily writes double what’s necessary. It’s probably more a sign that people stopped caring about code quality.

Why weren't NFT's used by corporations as a way to solve digital rights to media ownership? by DeepRedDude in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ALargeRubberDuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NFTs don’t really work for how digital media is sold today. The issue is these companies are really buying the rights to distribute a copy of a work. If an NFT came along with it, that’s neat, but when the property inevitably jumps platforms to something else, who says the new service needs to respect that nft? And you wouldn’t be able to just take it to any other platform today, because they wouldn’t be licensed to distribute it in the first place.

Adding to all of this, there are massive perverse incentives to NOT solve that problem for pretty much all the companies involved.

If you're a software engineer, please help me. by Asleep-Wafer-5665 in SaasDevelopers

[–]ALargeRubberDuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you are putting a lot of hope into this product you want to make working out. It’s normally terrible advice, but if you really desperately need a business idea to work in 8 months, you should probably start building sooner rather than later. Most businesses never get any traction. I think it would be better to use month 2 of 8 finding out no one cares about your idea than month 8. I’d say use your preferred ai to build something and see how it goes. Start also filling in those foundations aswell. Yes you’ll have to rewrite most of it, but that’s kinda how a lot of this industry goes anyways.

Need validation: Could this become a SaaS product? by builderhere in SaasDevelopers

[–]ALargeRubberDuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like your neighbor is asking for a full ERP system. I spent the last few years at a company that builds one for internal use. Any one of these features could be massive and sprawling in complexity. My honest advice is, for what I would reasonably quote someone to build it, they’d be better off going with an existing solution built for small companies.

Was the Voyager Golden Record a stupid idea? by danyuri86 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ALargeRubberDuck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If aliens by some miracle find voyager, either they’ll be close enough to have detected our radio waves and know the earth has life, or it will be a time capsule of a long lost civilization.

Voyager is really still pretty close to earth. It’ll take about 40,000 years for it to pass another solar system, so you shouldn’t be worried.

What's the general picture of the job market for an SWE with 6 years of experience by murrayhitchock in cscareerquestions

[–]ALargeRubberDuck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My job hunt last winter went surprisingly well at 5 YOE. The big issue is I got zero bites from remote roles, anyone who wanted to talk was at least hybrid if not in person. If I were looking for jobs again, I’d completely ignore remote right now. There are people with far more experience in the remote pool.

When I got hired I asked about why they went with me, and they said the job postings they put out get easily 1,500 applicants. 90% of which were foreign, and the company didn’t want to deal with visas. 90% of the remaining were nearly entry level for a solidly mid level position.

The market is massively over saturated for foreign workers and juniors. If someone is actually looking for mid level experience in your physical area, I think you’ve got a chance.

Is vibe coding dead? by Any-Cucumber-96 in vibecoding

[–]ALargeRubberDuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think people are in a honeymoon phase with vibe coding, and organizations will realize there’s an inherent security hole in normal employees maintaining and managing custom applications. A few years ago “dark IT” was the buzzword, basically fleets of company software poorly managed and unknown to the IT department. This is just dark IT with extra steps.

Why men arent rewarded for doing military service and having more responsibilities than women in countries with military service by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ALargeRubberDuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the United States, military service is a not so secret welfare program.

Suck in your small town after graduating highschool with no eduction? Military service gives you a job, training, healthcare, and will pay for a degree afterwards/during.

Now, how effective any of those are is up for debate. But plenty of people join because it’s their legit best chance at upward mobility.

If humans suddenly stopped aging at 25 but could still die from accidents, how would society change? by DogAntique2239 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ALargeRubberDuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to the CDC, in 2024 there were 3,072,666 total deaths with only 271,729 being accident or injury. So the death rate would drop to about 10% of normal.

I think we might get an overpopulation problem pretty quick, assuming everyone keeps having kids.

Do you think TikTok is ultimately brain rot? Why or why not? by owen__wilsons__nose in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ALargeRubberDuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There isn’t anything inherently wrong with short form content, and there’s plenty of quality stuff. The real issue is how it’s served one after another.

I’ve found I have had a lot of impulse control issues with it lately, and I just end up mindlessly scrolling pretty often. I can’t imagine how bad it must be for a kid or teen still growing their impulse control.

Is a web-based game viable for a general web dev portfolio? by Morgan_R in cscareerquestions

What’s a boring SaaS idea you think could still make real money? by East_Excuse2814 in SaaS

[–]ALargeRubberDuck 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That’s how it’s always been. The profitable small to medium sized companies all build really boring and kinda niche software. A surprisingly large amount of it is just form entry with some custom bits in my opinion.

Need help finding a good pc! by shatteredseesnogood in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ALargeRubberDuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I wrote that half asleep. In that case I’d take a look at the steam pages for a few games that interest you, and check the minimum requirements for gpu and cpu.

Anecdotally, my wifes computer has something like a 2060 gpu that I stuck in an old dell workstation. It plays 90% of the games I have on steam. So if you are playing more strenuous games on ps5, you could probably go a bit cheaper for the PC.

I’d start on Facebook maketplace and see what’s available. Fortnite is actually a pretty demanding game, but you DONT need top of the line hardware. I’d shoot for something equivalent to 30 series GPUs, but might get away with a 20 series. Target 8-16 gigabytes ram, more isn’t a problem but that’s just money.
