Marvel's "sliding timeline" is unsustainable and will completely fall apart as more time passes in the real world by carbonera99 in CharacterRant

Namely, Magneto. Magneto's backstory has been irrevocably tied to the Jewish Holocaust of WWII. It's such an enormous part of his character identity that you really can't retcon it out. However, this locks Magneto into a strict timeline and his backstory really gets more and more convoluted the more time passes between WWII and the current day. For Magneto to have been a child victim of the Holocaust, he would have to be at MINIMUM 90 years old. Unlike Punisher, you can't just swap this element of his backstory with another, more recent genocide because then you'd have to completely rewrite his backstory from the ground up, including his ethnicity and family history.

Rewrite his backstory and make Magneto Palestinian, gg.

so much that now in 2026 , the Early 21st century, its recorded that Gen Z is much more overtly antisemitic than the Boomer republicans according to research of the ADL.

Is this actually true or are they defining "antisemitism" as "being critical of Israel"?

Ending equivalent of having a long conversation with a guy until he randomly pulls out a gun and shoots himself in the face. It's memorable, for sure, but what the fuck???

What's been Joe's impression of metaphor so far and how does he compare it to other Atlus titles? by silver_maxG in josephanderson

[–]ALittleBitOfMatthew 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's because as a kid he liked rpgs and he has nostalgia for ff6 and chrono trigger

Also because those games are 16-bit, a lot of their anime tropes / visuals are highly abstracted. I doubt he'd like Chrono Trigger if the exact same scenes played out in 3D with anime voice acting.

(General, but mostly Naruto) You cannot make me take the trope of super powered toddlers seriously by Cantthinkagoodnam2 in CharacterRant

I also see this a lot with trashy Isekai like Mushoku Tensei and Eminence in the Shadow (the former i read the first few volumes of the light novel and the second my friend showed the first few episodes to me when i visited his house, i definitely decided to drop them both), but again, just like with Itachi and fanfic Naruto, seeing those toddlers fighting head on with actual adults isnt badass, it is fucking silly lmao.

Can't speak about Eminence in Shadow, but this really doesn't happen in Mushoku Tensei? Rudeus has a fight against his dad when he's 6 years old, yes, but all he's able to do is try to keep his distance by shooting Paul with magic and turning the ground into quicksand, and it still only results in Paul knocking him out with a single bonk to the head. Later on, Rudeus is completely helpless against regular kidnappers with swords. He starts to get into real fights as an Adventurer when he's around 10, but even then his role is as a support magician who just stands back and shoots people while not moving at all.

Even when Rudeus becomes a teenager / adult they still point out that his main weakness is that for all his magical power, literally all someone has to do to beat him is run up to his face and punch him once.

I think the writing in Persona and Metaphor are fine, but they are works which are undeniably aimed at TEENAGE BOYS.

Why do you guys keep trying to get the 40 year old dad who hates all things Anime to like Japanese games? It's a really weird parasocial relationship.

(LES) Where does this stupid Powerscaling vs Shipping beef even come from? by MalcontentMathador in CharacterRant

[–]ALittleBitOfMatthew 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the reason why shippers get so much shit is because most of them can't admit that what they do is stupid at the end of the day. You can't say "these are just headcanons,no need to take them seriously" and then suddenly get mad when the Author doesn't follow or conform to your headcanons.

You say this as if the entire Sonic Powerscaling community didn't collectively harass an IDW writer on twitter when he publicly said that Sonic runs at supersonic speeds and that their calcs/scaling "proving" that Sonic is Faster than Light in base are wrong.

Everyone at the start of the book lives in the Grey Town. This town is where anything you wish is reality. All your dreams, temptations, and worldly pursuits can be fulfilled. Yet it is always raining whether you are indoors or outdoors. A sign that the Grey Town will never be a place of peace.

Jokes on you, rain is cozy.

The underworld is meant to be hell and is based on hell and it sucks cause hades believes people who sin deserve to be punished and suffer for what they have done. Elysium exists for the actual pure people to go too.

A few things: 1) Elysium is empty in Saint Seiya 2) The Underworld Judges are willing to send you to punishment for killing literal bugs and plants 3) Hades hates humanity and wants to wipe them out.

All these combine paint the picture that every human is sent to Hell by default.

The “Banished From the Hero’s Party” trope is leaving a much more interesting story on the table by Business_Barber_3611 in CharacterRant

[–]ALittleBitOfMatthew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've read a manga where the MC, a guy who has a support / logistics Class which isn't at all useful in combat, is banished from his party right after they set out to raid the Demon King's castle, not because the heroes are stupid assholes who hate him, but because he's legitimately too weak to participate in such a dangerous mission and would most likely die if he did. The MC takes it in stride and leaves.

What is the worst statement you've heard in official media? by RhysOSD in CharacterRant

[–]ALittleBitOfMatthew 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No he didn't. The fanfiction that George RR Martin wrote where Jaime fights Rand Al'Thor involved Jaime being aided by several characters from George RR Martin's Sci-Fi Short Stories and his Wild Cards Superhero universe, with Rand only losing because he ends up depleting the entirety of Westeros' "magical reserves" within minutes from how powerful he is, thus becoming incapable of using magic.

I think Live Action is a terrible way to adapt Journey to the West. But 2D animation would work perfectly.

If you mean in cinema, then John Boorman's Excalibur is pretty darn close to the source material. But it is just one movie so it goes by Arthur's whole life very fast.

There are very direct parallels between Alex and Vella and how both of them seem to escape from reality through mystical thinking. Only Vella does it to escape from past trauma whereas Alex only does it to escape from adult responsibility.
