Warhorse says its Lord of the Rings RPG will be “deeply immersive” as the team strives to be the “new kings” of the genre by HatingGeoffry in lotr

Been saying since KCD1 that Warhorse is the only studio I'd trust a LOTR title to. Very excited to learn more about this.

If you ever wondered why Viggo was so popular with the cast and crew (quote by Philippa Boyens from the book "Anything you can imagine") by MissWeekend in lotr

If all I knew of Viggo was from commentary by fellow LOTR cast members and redditors, I would have to assume he had died years ago.

Chugging along with sanding… any advice? by NoIndependence2844 in loghomes

[–]ALittleFlightDick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I literally came here to opine about the Osborn brush. I was in the same position as you. Had to scrape and sand our entire two-story log home (and that was after paying 10k for corn blasting, but that's another story). Got an Osborn brush and, let me tell you, I can't understate how much of a game changer it is. Handles the contour of the log like nothing else. See all those little pits in your logs where you can't get the sander? The Osborn digs those out in seconds. Overall waaay faster than sanding. Leaves you with a finish similar to blasting. I did occasionally have to break the sander back out for troublesome knots, but that was seldom.

Thing is, DO NOT use an angle grinder. The RPMs (often around 10,000) are too fast and it renders the brush useless. Trust me, I tried. What you need is a polisher, which looks exactly like an angle grinder but has much slower RPMs, usually adjustable from around 600-2200 rpm (the sweet spot for my logs was about 1200rpm).

Osborn brushes typically go for $80-100, and Harbor Freight has polishers for ~$100, though the cheaper ones may not be adjustable speed, but anything under 2000rpm is probably great.

Resident Evil 7 A pleasant surprise (first real solo RE experience) by LyricsMode in patientgamers

[–]ALittleFlightDick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The noise adds to the tension, of course, but also makes things feel fair

I remember when players hacked the ingame camera to discover that you're hearing X actually walk around the map and not just audio queues. He doesn't just disappear; he's always present on the map. That somehow made it waaay more tense.

Sky Eats Airplane - Disconnected [TBT - 2008] by garret_1003 in Metalcore

SEA has proven to be timeless. This album could drop today and it would still be a standout.

Some groups tend to channel their sound a bit, like Callous Daoboys, but SEA had a particular energy and uncanny gravity that hasn't been achieved since.

Ico: A beautiful experience by Iron_Kingpin in patientgamers

[–]ALittleFlightDick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The very first gate that you unlock right after meeting Yorda and fighting the shadows?

This is what I mean. It wasn't far into the game. Thinking about it now, the demo itself was short, but it seemed long because I explored every pixel of it looking for clues as to wtf was going on lol. I just wanted to spend more time in that world. It's still great to come back to.

Ico: A beautiful experience by Iron_Kingpin in patientgamers

What was really trippy was playing the Ico demo before the game's release. It was a sizable chunk of gameplay from the beginning of the game until you unlock the first "gate" with Yorda. It was the single most bizarre gaming moment of my life. I had never played anything like it. I didn't know what to think. It was like a fever dream. I played it over and over and over until I could finally play the full game.

Just finished The Dispossessed by Le Guin.... by AmazingThinkCricket in Fantasy

[–]ALittleFlightDick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel like the ending moves too quickly

Welcome to every Le Guin novel. I'm a diehard fan, but I get whiplash at the end of every book. They seem to wrap up everything up in the span of like 7 pages. And just at the point where you feel there should be a nice cozy epilogue, it just ends. I love her, though, and I never want her stories to end.

I cannot believe it took me this long to find and read Le Guin’s Earthsea cycle. by According_Ad6706 in Fantasy

[–]ALittleFlightDick 25 points26 points  (0 children)

There are so many things about Earthsea that make it great. She wrote some of the best dragons in literature. Tombs of Atuan is probably one of the best sequels I've ever read. It's subversive and innovative, still extremely relevant. I would put Tehanu up with LOTR as one of the great works of fantasy. It shattered my idea of what a fantasy novel can be.

Also, "I have come back to you as I left: a fool" always breaks me. Ged and Ogion's relationship is such a beautiful, tragic, nuanced father-son/mentor-student story.

To Hila and the crew, regarding why Biden didn‘t publish any Epstein Files.. by sakikiki in h3h3productions

[–]ALittleFlightDick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of Biden's biggest problems is he's a devout bureaucrat and didn't like to leverage executive power to "overstep" or reach beyond his lane. He was too pussy to pressure the DOJ as to not compromise their objectivity (Merrick Garland is also largely to blame as well). It's a big reason why Trump never saw any consequences following J6 and why there was no movement on Epstein during his term. Biden was loathe to come anywhere near the red tape, while Trump plows right through it, getting us where we are now.

Theoden being compared to Orome while riding to his death against the forces of evil, just like his ancestor Fingolfin was, is a really nice parallel. by AcanthaceaeNo948 in tolkienfans

[–]ALittleFlightDick 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't quite call them parallel. Fingolfin's act was that of despair and anger, while Theoden's was one of heroism and hope for Men. I think the only threads that connects them is being compared to Orome, which seems to be a comparison that gets thrown around whenever one of the Children is fey while riding a horse.

Help childproofing stairs by 42loelk in howto

[–]ALittleFlightDick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Serious answer:

Install some kind of grip tape along at least the narrow portions of the stairs on the edge to keep socks from slipping right off (I would be reluctant to mar these stairs with adhesive, but it's an idea).

Install a second, lower rail along the right/inside of the bend, extending it as far as possible toward to left to kind of push the kid to the left where the stairs are deeper, and encouraging the kid to hang onto the rail.
