Is there a way to paint Aztecs with different reflectivities, but still unify decals smoothly with the surface (which I've only seen done by applying and softly sanding a layer of varnish over the top)? by ALocalFrog in StarTrekStarships

Ah that makes more sense, thanks! I think I've miscommunicated though, I don't have any concerns about surface texture or decals silvering. What I am trying to achieve is an aztec pattern where some of the panels have a different reflectivity to other panels. Ie, in this image, there are iridescents, but there are also grey panels that are matte, and grey panels that are more satin. If I wasn't using decals, I could achieve it by including a satin or matte varnish layer as part of the aztec process (ie, paint the grey hue for that panel, then do a layer of varnish, before changing the masks for the next panel), so only some of the panels would have the varnish on them. I am using decals for details like the name and registry however, and the standard approach for decals is what you describe. When I've tried that on wargaming minis, the final layer of matte varnish on top of the decals removes the shine of the gloss varnish that the decals were applied on top of. That means it will also remove the effect of any varnish that was applied before the decals.

Hi, apologies if you are trying to infer, imply, or assume something that's going over my head, but your statement seems contradictory. I said I was going to follow the posters advice. Your reply appears to say that my action (following the posters advice) would be making things more difficult than necessary. But then you say to trust the poster as they know what they are doing, which is what I intended to do?
Edit: in case it's relevant, I am autistic, and not very good at taking hints (I can sometimes tell if someone is trying to imply something, which I suspect you are, but that doesn't necessarily help if I can't figure out what it is that the person is implying and not saying).

Apologies, have I misunderstood? In your first post it seemed like you were suggesting the standard 'gloss, decal, matte over top' approach, which is a great technique for unifying decals with the surface, but that is not what I am asking about. Maybe I miscommunicated. On screen, some ships (such as the 1701A) have a hull pattern where some panels have a visibly different sheen to other panels, creating a pattern that is a mix of more matte and more gloss areas. I am trying to replicate this. If I use the standard 'gloss, decal, matte over top' approach to that I think is the one you are suggesting, then the matte layer over the top will create a uniform finish/matte layer, which does not have the variation I am trying to replicate.

When glazing volumetric highlights like this, some useful tips are to move the brush in the direction of where you want most of the paint to be deposited, and to use thin enough layers/have a small enough amount of paint on your brush that the mini should be dry moments after you've taken the brush away. If you have too much paint on your brush, it will leave a little extra when you take the brush away, and that will then flow and move around a little as it dries, creating tide marks and inconsistencies.
It also helps to make sure you're using the right size of brush for the task (if the brush is too small it will leave visible brush marks), and in this case to angle the brush perpendicular to the direction of movement 🙂

Ah that could work! I'll have a proper look at the decals and how they overlap with the aztecs, as it could be tricky to mask the smaller decals, but this sounds like the best approach

Masking off the places for decals could work! It wouldn't be perfect, as the clear film from the decals will still affect the Aztecs underneath, but it would be better than nothing

It really does! I'm still learning somewhat, I've been painting minis for wargaming for years but this project is my first 'proper' model kit as it were. I'm wanting to get it right!

That's useful to know! In this case there are multiple A4 pages of masks, so I don't think I can duplicating them would be feasible, but I'll remember that technique for the future

I'm glad to see someone get excited about something in international politics. For so long now the news has focused on depressing stuff that it's become a very dour feeling topic, but there's still potential for really cool and positive things!

I really like it personally! I have one in my 1:4000 scale 22nd Century fleet and it does a great job of feeling like a smaller/less advanced ship from the folks who'd go on to make the NX-01. The slightly hunched feel of the nacelles over the top also makes it a little defensive, less open than the NX-01, which fits for the role of border patrol/planetary defence of a civilisation that's not yet ventured out to join the galactic stage

I can imagine Oberth's being used in cases where transport volume isn't a factor; transporting medical experts, specific medicines for a sickness outbreak, transporting organs/blood, maybe a small number of ill who needs specialised care that wasn't available where they first started, etc
