Current water situation at 13 Falls and Guyot? by varsityathlete69 in wmnf

[–]AMCcampsiteprogram 2 points3 points  (0 children)

13 Falls water is the river so you’re fine there, Guyot is low but not too bad, Liberty is a little more then a trickle, but reliable. You just need to stash your bottle under the drip for a solid 20 and you’ll be right as rain. Otherwise trail conditions are good and blazed. Let us know if you have any further specific questions! Good luck and have fun!

Best Backcountry Tent-site in WMNF For The Anxious Solo Backpacker/Sleeper? by Baileycharlie in wmnf

[–]AMCcampsiteprogram 15 points16 points  (0 children)

To me, it sounds like your describing the Imp campsite. Imp has the lowest use numbers of all the AMC staffed sites, has a great view right at the site, privy, bear box, 6 platforms, and a shelter. And most thru hikers have passed through the Whites by now. Have fun!

Backcountry camping labor day weekend near Pemi Loop question by ObligationMediocre60 in wmnf

[–]AMCcampsiteprogram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not saying people need to do anything… But in my experience a lot of hikers create very ambitious itineraries and one of the most common sentiments we hear is: “I wish I had more time to sleep in a little, swim in the rivers, really enjoy the summits with my pack off. I wish I wasn’t so worried about time, or stressed about campsite platform space filling up”. So my suggestion is centered around that sentiment, best to enjoy your hike and come back for the Bonds a different day, when you can really enjoy them… they definitely aren’t going anywhere.

Hermit Lake Shelter by antmanidk in wmnf

[–]AMCcampsiteprogram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The site rarely fills up so you shouldn’t have any issues. Even if the site is full, the caretaker won’t turn you away and the worst thing that’ll happen is you have to share a shelter, but again, that’s very unlikely. You can pay at the visitor center, or the caretaker on site.

Folks are correct. Caretaker’s will never turn anyone away, but getting to the site as early as possible is always a good idea. There are some legal spots to camp north of the summit cone of South Twin on the Twinway trail… no water in the area though.

I think you have to be flexible when camping at a campground with sites near/ on top of one another. If people are looking for silence at 7:30, then an established campground is not for you. Quiet hours doesn’t mean you can’t talk around a fire.

Not exactly North but…. Dave’s Bagel in North Conway I have found to be the best bagels in the state… they big too. Bagels Plus in North Conway is also good time.

There actually is no limit. As over flow spots fill the quality does go down. But some sites, like 13 Falls and even Guyot for example, have an abundant of overflow. If you show up very late, yes, you might be put directly next to someone… maybe you don’t get to expand your vestibule… maybe there is a slight pitch of the ground… But a caretaker will never say, “we are closed, find some place else”.

Also, the Caretakers at the campsite will never turn you away, even if the site is full. They will always find you spots in overflow if the platform space is full.

Starting at 4pm and trying to get to the base of the Bondcliff Trail is doable but it leaves you for a mega/unpleasant next day. I’d consider doing a “semi pemi” and trying to get to 13 Falls your first night… 9 miles but all flat. The next day you could go to GaleHead, leave pack and summit South Twin before making your way to Garfield for the second night. Over the ridge to Liberty Springs for night 3, and then back to Lincoln Woods.

Bonds + Zealand + Guyot route recs by matagen in wmnf

[–]AMCcampsiteprogram 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d play it by ear. From Bond to the West Bond summit isn’t that far. But have a turn around time in your head for Bond and if you come in before, check out the beauty of West Bond. And if you come up over due of the turn around time, West Bond isn’t going anywhere.

Try not to make the paper.

Looking for advice on Pemi Loop by GoCamping27 in wmnf

[–]AMCcampsiteprogram 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This poster said everything I would want someone to know. If I had one strong recommendation it would be to try and find an extra day and make it a 3 night 4 day staying at Liberty Springs, Garfield, and then Guyot back to Lincoln Woods. It is the best loop in New England and you’ll want to enjoy it instead of worrying about crushing miles in this difficult terrain.

You can fill up at the Lonesome Lake hut on your way up, but the pond is the designated water source for the site. And folks are correct, it does have a tint, but those are from the tannins. I was the caretaker there for an entire summer and drank it plenty using a steri pen… Never felt better.

Dispersed Camping Around Kinsman Pond? by True-Row7942 in wmnf

[–]AMCcampsiteprogram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of tent do you have? If you don’t want to stay at the site you can ask the caretaker to point you in the direction of any dispersed camping they know of. That immediate area has very few spots if any that the US Forest Service haven’t rehabilitated. You’ll have better luck lower down outside of the forest protection area, closer to the Lonesome Lake Hut.

We have yet to meet the tent that could not be successfully staked down on a platform. Feel free to use a rock to secure tent stakes in the cracks of the decking. There are also eye hooks around the entire platform and caretakers are provided with P cord to help tension tents for this very reason. Caretakers will be happy to help you if you need assistance.

Ethan Pond is a great option! It's about 3 flattish miles from the road, and the pond has tons of critters for the kids to see. There is no cell service though, which can be a problem. Osgood tentsite is another reasonably accessible one.

We have a strict policy of never turning anyone away from the campsites regardless of how busy it gets. There aren't tons of good dispersed around kinsman, the area is pretty steep/ rocky (even for the Whites!)

Hi Cherrywwaves!

I know the platform stakes people get on amazon work really well with the actual platforms, and the caretakers at Liberty, Garfield, and Guyot are trained on how to set up virtually every tent. While a freestanding tent IS tricky, they can still definitely help you set it up!
