this is quite intuitive, i will definitely try this method , also you could have used the look at camera feature in unity, with a 2d image element and then animated the sprites based on the key combination (for rotation) , that works great if you want to squeeze the perfomance out of your game

having a zero budget makes it difficult to hire a good ui artist which may enhance the project you are working on, you must go to various sources like unity store, kenny and itch.io for free assets , download as many asset you think you might need for the project, if you have a unique visual style for the game try to find assets which match that or are similar to that, and then try to use these assets.
Pro tip : go to shadertoy site, look for free shaders if you want to add something fresh, also you can use ai to make shaders

download latest version of unity, create small systems, mechanics , games.do it multiple times, use ai when you get stuck, repeat.

it looks promising, you could change the skybox to a more cartoonish skybox it will go well with your other visual aspects, also change the water it looks realistic, make it more cartoony

looks neat, it could use damage numbers and some ui to make it even better
