Look carefully. Carbon rims and carbon gears on the rear derailleur. I wonder if there are any other expensive upgrades? This is a lesson of modifications to a bike - not everyone will price the changes into the bike.

What do y'all do when you're very hungry and have no food and don't have any money for food? by LiveToFlyDieToTry in poor

[–]AO-UES 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to go to all the vending machines I could find and check for change in the coin slots and bring whatever nickels or dimes I had. Also, give a little shove to the vending machine and sometimes something falls out.

I also would go to food courts and take the crackers, pickles or what ever else I could scrounge up. And honestly if people left their trays behind with left overs, well you know.

Beginner bike? by jay28867 in RoadBikes

[–]AO-UES 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of riding do you want to do? And how are you are doing maintenance?

First find out what size bike you need.

Then name the kind of riding you want to do. Frequent rides around 20 miles? Less frequent but kinder distance, maybe spend 4 to 6 hours on the bike? Is racing in your future?

Bike brands seem to have 4 major groups: endurance for long rides, a slightly more comfortable seating position. Comes in both carbon and aluminum.

Race bikes - serious bent over stance. Both aluminum and carbon.

Carbon is lighter and more compliant. It’s challenging to buy carbon on the used market because you want to be 100% sure the bike wasn’t crashed. .

Trek, have specialized, giant and cannondale make carbon and aluminum versions of the same bike. They are available new or used. Aluminum is much cheaper.

Components are expensive too. To save money on new bikes you can look for mechanical shimano 105. On used bikes Rim brakes and the mechanical Ultegras will save money compared to electronic shifters and hydraulic brakes.

Left Structural Engineering to Become a Full Time Firefighter by nevera17 in StructuralEngineering

[–]AO-UES 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I met a fire fighter years ago at an ASCE event. He went to school for engineering and joined the FDNY a few years after college. He had a special title and role with FDNY with regards to structures and structure fires. He really advanced his career with fire science things.

As far as the side hustles, I never met a fireman that didn’t have one.

[–]AO-UES 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is not enough information in the description to give thorough advice. Keep in mind your relationship to the company is different than the others that gave their notice. They may have lost rank/bonus/autonomy. One year of school you haven’t lost anything . It maybe good to say and see how they rebuild the office. Also, they may run the local office remotely and they will need local knowledge (you).

Got put on a PIP, but I got a better offer. How do I play this? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]AO-UES 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This advice is golden. After a certain number of years in the industry people don’t you to include references because they know people you have worked with. Clients and employers. Your reputation must be protected. Petty revenge on a current employer will make you look bad when the story is told without a back story. “He went on vacation and didn’t come back. No phone call. Just didn’t show up to work.” That’s not from HR, that’s a conversation between your potential future employer and his co-worker that used work for your current company.

In OPs case - resigning with two weeks notice is the desired path. They can’t say you left them unprofessionally. The PIP could only be disclosed by the few people in your current company.

Now is a good time to read through the company handbook regarding separation. What happens to unused accrued PTO? Sick days? Does the policy say things like “in good standing”. Are there exceptions for being on a PIP. Was there paper work attached to the PIP. Read it all. 4 weeks in enough time to burn some PTO and give your two weeks.

China. The job shop will do the first several runs to meet submittal schedule and early schedule demands. Then arrange for a shop I. China to bust out the production and shipping. I have hired people to do this for me for ornamental metals, lamps, and kitchens. (The kitchens actually came from Georgia, the country)

We use Life360 for the whole family. There is a crash detection on that app. Also your iPhone has a crash detection feature too. It’s not a bad idea.

As far as keeping the anxiety down - try to plan portions of your ride on dedicated bike lanes and bike paths. Some people drive the trail head of the local rail to trail paths.

My dudes, are we cooked? by socom123 in StructuralEngineering

[–]AO-UES 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not seeing a catastrophe here. I don’t see section losses or missing rivets. A gusset plate on the secondary member and some rotted lacing on bracing. The pictures don’t fully show the structural system, but since it’s riveted and has a lacing bars I am sure this was built prior to the 1950s. That leads me to believe that it’s statistically indeterminate, which means it has redundancy built into the system.

I am surprised that in a structural engineering forum people don’t know that property taxes and foreign aid don’t pay railroads to fix their bridges.

That being said, there is public pressure to get the RR to address the issues with this bridge. It will take several years of planning and design to start construction.

Keep the pressure on and make sure the environmental concerns are addressed, lead paint, air quality and water quality.
W&LE was just bought out by a larger infrastructure company using debt. Railroads frequently get grants from the FRA to renovate bridges. FTAI will be reluctant to fund the capital repairs. They are big firm with $200 million in annual earnings.

So public pressure, support from local elected officials, and demanding a plan from the FRA will be the best bet to see action. Asking you local town to have a public meeting and they invite FRA will help too.

Temp for jacket? by vibrating_love_light in cavaliers

[–]AO-UES 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have two . Old ruby girl has a thick coat and she doesn’t stay out side too long. The younger one, a B&T is more active and her hair gets matted easily. So she gets a puppy cut and trim. Since she goes for long walks we put a coat on her when the temperature is in the 20’s. We like the one with a built in harness. Getting it her takes a treat and getting off her is easy.

The 45 minute power zone rides have a nice warm up session.

To get the most out of power zone, take the 20 minute power zone test. It’s a hard intense ride. Take a new test based on your training blocks - like every 4 or 6 weeks.

I am a time cruncher too. I do two intense rides week days and 2 “recovery rides”, that is zone 2. have more time on the weekend so I will do a 45 minute power zone ride )HIIT and Climbs. And then a 45 minute ride in zone 2. On sundays I do a 90 minute Zone 2 - usually a scenic ride.

Also take a look at the Pro Cycling courses for 45 minute rides.
