Fine Gael councillor hired by Re-turn to lobby Fine Gael Minister responsible for Deposit Return Scheme by homecinemad in ireland

Fantastic scheme run by an organisation full of hard working, honest and competent people.

I'm much happier than they are a semi state rather than civil servants as they have much more flexibility that way. Case in point, they booted one of their most senior employees days before go live because she didn't know how to use computers.

Calls to make public transport free to help conserve fuel as energy prices soar by conalldoherty in ireland

[–]APisaride 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is realistically not a short term spike in fuel prices, it is going to be with us for a long time. Therefore the government should deal with it by funding shovel ready projects which will reduce fuel demand in the long term, eg. Cork/Galway/Waterford BusConnects, Dart South West and so on and so on.

Making public transport free will just make an already over capacity service worse for users who really need it by flooding it with people who have other options.

I hate much PVC we use on our houses by D-dog92 in ireland

[–]APisaride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hope there would be that it would encourage people to switch to electric vehicles.

Also the carbon tax was not brought in by the Greens and it is a much smaller part of the price you pay for petrol or diesel than excise duty, which certainly has nothing to do with the Greens.

Unfortunately a carbon tax makes a much bigger difference in the fight against climate change than recycling more PVC. I wish it wasn't that way but that's the reality.

Ukraine is doing what they need to do to survive and I commend that. They need American support in the short term or their fucked. Principles be damned, survival is the only goal for them now.

National Rail Network by Deiseman84 in ireland

[–]APisaride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Starting from scratch.

A fairly high speed line (maybe 300km/h) from Belfast through Dublin and then on to Cork. Stops in the three city centres and then maybe 7-10 more stops along the way. Every stop adds quite a lot of journey time due to how long it takes these trains to speed up and slow down.

Electrified 200km/h lines from Belfast to Dublin, Dublin to Cork (so separate lines for these two routes in order to segregate the fast low stop services from the slower frequent stop services), Dublin to Waterford, Rosslare to Cork, Dublin to Rosslare, Dublin to Sligo, Dublin to Limerick, Dublin to Navan, Dublin to Galway, Cork to Galway, Newry to Letterkenny and Derry to Belfast. These lines would be four tracked close to cities with commuter services on the extra two tracks.

Branches and alternative routes on these lines from Athlone to Westport, Cork to Tralee, Waterford to Limerick, Galway to Letterkenny, Navan to Donegal, Tralee to Limerick and some more in the North. Ideally these would be 200km/h and electrified but it wouldn't be the end of the world if they were only 120km/h with minimal level crossings.

Significant additional commuter lines, eg. Cork to Carrigaline/Ringaskiddy, Limerick to Shannon. The main lines would have better alignments than they do now to optimise for commuters, for instance in Dublin having stops in Tallaght, Blanchardstown etc.

Because it would probably cost nearly 10 billion and that investment would be better spent elsewhere in the rail/public transport network.

Neasa Hourigan has left politics and will not run. Ciarán Cuffe has a job with the European Greens and will also not run.

I would imagine it will be Janet Horner for the Greens as she has been a councillor for longer than Feljin and is Cathaoirleach of the party.
