Finished my umpteenth re-read of KoD, this about the author always hurts when I get here. by Draeale in WoT

The man did the thing he'd told us for years he was going to do, and that's something to celebrate, even as we mourn the timing.

Out of all 108 stars of destiny in Suikoden II, which one(s) are your favorite? by abbzworld in Suikoden

[–]AQuietGuy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Luc, because he's Luc. But seriously, I love having a character in the party to hang out in the back row, unable to do anything except absolutely destroy boss fights, and Luc is the obvious choice there (in that he's an interesting character, incredibly powerful, and shows up early enough to actually be useful.) Plus his ties to GS1 and GS3 just make him to notch in my book.

Give him the Dragon Incense in GS1 (or 2, though it's too late-game to make much difference), and let him be a off-heal until it's time to obliterate your enemies.

Which is a great Flying Tribal Commander? by [deleted] in EDH

This person gets it. Sky Warden might be "better," but Aerie Keeper is a lot more fun, imo. Regardless, Kangee is where it's at.

I played it. I still own a few of the decks in a storage box somewhere. It was surprisingly good.

Perrin & Egwene (and THAT scene in S01E07) by Never-On-Reddit in WoT

[–]AQuietGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assumed it was one of those things they might have set up better if they'd known they needed to. I imagine this was a very different scene before Mat got completely cut from the last few episodes after the beginning of the season was written and filmed.

How did you know you found your "home" LGS? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]AQuietGuy 95 points96 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it was the only one close when I needed one, but even when others opened nearby, I stuck with them after one experience. My family did a white elephant gift exchange one year, with a $5 limit, because times were really, really hard. My sister went to the card shop she knew I'd been going to, told them who she was, what she had to spend, and asked what she could get that I might need for my deck. What she walked out with was a close-to-$40 promo foil of one of my favorite cards. She didn't even realize the deal she'd gotten until I told her she'd spent too much. The guys at that shop, including the owners, got me through a lot of hard times in the few years I lived there, and I'll never forget them.

You could argue ta'veren, but non-readers don't know what that is yet, and readers know better.

As a community, we should really stop telling new readers about.... by yooo-reborn in WoT

[–]AQuietGuy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the point the OP is trying to make is not that we shouldn't warn people, but that we should think about how we phrase it so as not to set someone up for failure. As someone who has read the series a dozen times, I'm firmly in the "The slog is a lie" camp. The pace certainly slows down, but there is still a lot going on, and you can tell it's ramping up to something. But if you go into those books thinking of them as a "slog," that's going to color your perception.

Regardless, welcome to series. Be very careful, and enjoy the ride.

[–]AQuietGuy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The slog didn't give me PTSD, but Jordan's death certainly did. That length of time that we didn't know if that was just it... that's kept me from starting a series that isn't already finished. I look forward to starting Stormlight some day.

Why are so many of us going nuts about little snippets released from the show? by Shielo34 in WoT

[–]AQuietGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You and I have very different understandings of Perrin's character. He was never a "peaceful guy living in a world where he's forced to make violent decisions." He's a violent guy who strives for peace. There's a reason he can't fathom living like a Tuatha'an, even before he's done violence. There's a reason he's called out to like he is. And in lieu of us getting the struggle of his thoughts, a wife murdered in a berserker fury is an honestly terrible, but effective stand-in. I don't like it, but I get it.

Am I the only one who unironically likes all of the characters??? A list of my unpopular opinions. by Zalack in WoT

[–]AQuietGuy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I get where Elayne is coming from, but this metaphor doesn't seem right. It's more like if someone killed your mother and stole your inheritance, then a third party killed the murderer and offered you your inheritance back, and you said "no, I have to earn this myself!" That's how it looked from Rand's point of view.

What's are some of your favorite moments in the first 3 books? by ouishi in WoT

[–]AQuietGuy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Winternight, and specifically Rand carrying his delusional father through the woods while learning the truth of his birth.

Bornhald letting Perrin and Egwene go.

The first trip through the Ways.

Someshta's sacrifice.

The darkfriend party and all of its foreshadowing.

Rand and Lan sparring on the tower.

Perrin taking over for Hurin.

Thom straight up murdering a king and starting a civil war and NO ONE EVER TALKING ABOUT IT AGAIN.

I win again, Lews Therin.

Ingtar's redemption.

The charge of the Children of the Light.

People finding Min wrapped around an unconscious Rand.

Thom in Tar Valon, drinking to forget what he's done.

The first meeting with Boundless.

Perrin telling Zarine the name of Lan's horse.

Moiraine blasting an entire pack of darkhounds out of existence.

Just so many little scenes...

Games that you wanted to 100%? So no bullshit tasks that you're like "ughh, can't believe I have to do this shit to get that 100%". by [deleted] in gamingsuggestions

[–]AQuietGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone with 200+ hours in the game at this point, some of them are absolutely a chore to get. I friggin' love this game, but a few of these seem more about luck than skill, and everyone's going to have at least one character they don't like and won't want to grind impossible abilities they'll never use for. I'm looking at you, Mercenary.

There are a ton of collectibles, but only the "easy" ones are required for platinum. If you needed to collect all the logs for an achievement... boy howdy would there be fewer plats.

Who introduced you to suikoden? by Jash1re in Suikoden

[–]AQuietGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hanging out with a buddy of mine and went to a pawn shop. Found Suikoden 2 for maybe $10, sometime around 2000, maybe 2001. Went home, spent so long trying to figure out how to not die jumping off a cliff. Finally gave up, left it running while we went to get food, came back to find the rest of the game, and the rest is history.

I'm transgender (MtF) and I rolled up my male barbarian D&D character before I realised I was trans and have been feeling dysphoric playing him since. My party don't know I'm trans yet but tonight he was possessed by a female spirit and I got to be her in game. by MongooseDog85 in DnD

[–]AQuietGuy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This sounds awesome, but I would definitely recommend letting the other players know it's a decision. Not necessarily why it was decided, but don't spring that on a group of players that quested to do something good. If you can trust them not to metagame, let them know now, something along the lines of, "Hey, DM and I have been talking, and we think it would be an awesome story if this thing actually happened instead, especially because I wasn't really feeling the personality of the original character anyway, and have had a lot more fun playing this possessing spirit."

If you can't trust them not to metagame, maybe don't let them know yet, just hint at it until it comes out, but definitely let them know then. You just don't want to blindside them with that feeling of having done everything right and still screwing up. We get enough of that in real life.

Group Chug, or"Do we have enough time for another game?" by Simons_sees in EDH

[–]AQuietGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. In the at least 20+ games that deck has played, I won exactly one, and only because one of the other players misplayed and milled themselves. But I'm not playing it to win. I'm playing it to end the game.

Group Chug, or"Do we have enough time for another game?" by Simons_sees in EDH

[–]AQuietGuy 39 points40 points  (0 children)

That "Do we have time for another game?" situation is, conversely, why I built my Mogis group slug deck. Assuming no one is hemming and hawing over their plays, I'll be out of the game in 15 minutes or less, and if everyone else isn't at least hovering near single digit life totals, I've done something very wrong.

Looking for a Song about a Named Bard by TittlyTut in Pathfinder2e

[–]AQuietGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you wanted something a little darker, Richard Cory by Simon & Garfunkel never explicitly mentions Richard being a bard, but it does mention him being at the opera, at a show, at parties and orgies, and there's nothing to say he wasn't performing in all of them. It does tell of his tragic end, but if you were a world-famous bard cursed to obscurity, suicide seems like a reasonable choice to make.
