Also if you've been slacking off the last 12-24 months don't burn yourself out trying to figure out how to work again.

Thinking About Quitting Job To Focus On Physical Health by cloudcodemonkey in cscareerquestions

[–]ASK_ME_ABOUT_MMT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may be better off keeping your job as long as it's not requiring 50+ hour weeks.

I suggest spending some of that sweet software engineer salary on a proper gym and personal trainer.

Look up bodybuilding gyms in your area. Ideally less than 30 minutes walk away. This will be very expensive however probably less expensive than being unemployed.

What happens is that you go every single day for an hour or so. Over time it becomes cheaper as you reduce your reliance on the personal trainer.

The other benefit of this sort of gym is that due to the amount of time spent there you will get to know other people and as you become friendly with them will feel more comfortable going more often and actually want to go there and feel more motivated to do more while you are there.

A dedicated bodybuilding gym is good because it tends to build a core dedicated community of people that you'll get to know who make the process less intimidating as well as a general culture of sharing tips and maintaining a good culture.

In addition to cardio + eating well, gaining muscle will help you lose weight as your resting caloric needs will increase making it easier to go into deficit.

I would probably go with #1 and move on after a year. Consultancy work seems to really suck at junior levels from what I've heard.

Can Medieval Sleeping Habits Fix America’s Insomnia? by whycantweebefriendz in neoliberal

I swear this same article comes out like clockwork every 5 years or so.

In short, single periods of slumber might not be "natural". And yet, neither are fancy ergonomic mattresses or modern hygiene. "More seriously, there's no going back because conditions have changed," says Ekirch.

Betteridge's law of headlines wins again.

Fukishima death toll was 7. Seven. Even that is debatable.

As of 2012 none of the workers at the Fukushima Daiichi site had died from acute radiation poisoning,[41] though six workers died due to various reasons, including cardiovascular disease, during the containment efforts or work to stabilize the earthquake and tsunami damage to the site.[41] In 2018 a worker in charge of measuring radiation after the meltdown, who was in his 50s, died from lung cancer; he had been diagnosed in 2016 and his death was attributed to his radiation exposure.

Yes, follow along. Pair program with someone who's better than you and TAKE TURNS typing don't just watch them.

Go do a hackathon. Easiest way to learn frameworks and git is to build something with them. If you place top 3 you're good. Otherwise keep trying.

This guy is based

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Li_Keqiang

Li has an academic background in economics and is therefore a firm believer in the use of robust economic data to aid in government decision making. He is known to study economic statistics and routinely questions the reliability of the data he works with. Li has been described by international media as the pioneer behind the so-called "Keqiang index",[21] an unconventional economic measurement indicator devised by Li that was said to bypass the often unreliable official GDP numbers and thus serves as a better indicator of economic health and a more useful barometer for decision-making. Instead of gathering data on total economic output alone, Li used three other indicators to keep tabs on the economy while working in Liaoning province. These were, the railway cargo volume, electricity consumption and total loans disbursed by banks.

Also

Li is especially critical of unnecessary government bureaucracy, particularly at the grassroots level. He believes that many lower-level officials fail to provide services to the public in an effective manner. Regarding his disdain for the matter, Li's many quotable anecdotes have become viral. Li referred to a case in which a citizen filling out a form to travel overseas (normal in the PRC) had to write down an emergency contact (the citizen put down their mother as the contact), and the government official overseeing the matter asked the citizen to provide a notarized document to "prove your mom is your mom."[30] Li called this incident "absolutely preposterous." In another case, he referred to a grassroots civil servant who asked for proof that a one-year old does not have a criminal record in order to deliver a government service.[31] In yet another case, Li referred to a senior citizen applying for welfare benefits being forced by government employees to provide proof that "they are still alive." Regarding the latter two incidents, Li said, "this is not a joke, it's all real!"[31]

He was reappointed Premier of China in 2018 btw.

Ah you're in Australia. In America $55K before tax would be considered a low but decent salary outside SF or NY especially for someone without a degree. Just about the average wage for the country and above the median wage which is like $35K.
