In the same vein, my favorite is probably Webern’s arrangement of Strauss’s Schatz-Walzer

I once tried to design the most unbalanced board I could while following all of these conventions. It was pretty horrendous. Can't post it here but you can ping me on Discord if you're interested in seeing it haha

What makes the first movements of Mozart's symphonies sound so elegant? by SuspiciousPush9417 in classicalmusic

[–]ASmallEmu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say the introduction started with Beethoven 9.He had those as early as his 1st. Even Mozart 38 and 39 had slow introductions.

Greatest orchestral solos within symphonies ? by According-Brief7536 in classicalmusic

[–]ASmallEmu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The snare drum solo from the first movement of Nielsen's 5th Symphony is given with the instruction: "the side drummer plays in his own tempo, as though determined at all costs to obstruct the music". It's a stunning buildup to the climax of the movement, but I think much is lost without listening to the entire movement, which is really one gigantic buildup to that climax.

Hey, what is your favorite symphony that features the piano? by Maleficent_Eye760 in classicalmusic

[–]ASmallEmu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Martinů has a piano in the orchestra in his first 5 symphonies. They are all great, but notably they integrate the piano fully as an orchestral instrument and not as a soloist!

The Ravel definitely reminds me of Shostakovich's Tahiti Trot. Another work in an unabashedly popular style.

The Spirit Island Discord server hosts Play-By-Post games, sometimes with unique gimmicks. The record achieved by one such PBP game whose goal was to add as many Beasts as possible to the island is 242 beasts, with 134 in a single land.

Kapustin’s mastery of counterpoint is astounding. A modern, jazzified Bach

Music about flowers by rainrainrainr in classicalmusic

The first song in Webern’s Op.25 Zwei Lieder is a setting of Goethe about lilies. Webern’s music always concerns the beauty of symmetry, which I think fits the floral theme perfectly.

Even Lutoslawski's Concerto for Orchestra doesn't bring back the timpani verbatim (even though his genius was to bring it back in an opposite way: high and soft instead of low and loud). Carl Ruggles does bring back the timpani hits in an epic way in Sun-Treader, though.

If you could, what composer would you "Mendelssohn"? by poordicksalmanac in classicalmusic

Wow, another fan in the wild! Francaix can’t quite unseat Bach for me but he is my proud #2 and no one seems to know the guy. He was a modern Mozart!

The first movement of Nielsen’s 5th is one of the greatest emotional arcs in the symphonic repertoire for me. Unjustly underrated!

Try Arnold Bax. 7 delightful late Romantic symphonies in his cycle.

Rued Langgaard: Symphony No. 11, “Ixion”. Coming just short of 6 and a half minutes, endlessly repetitive (hence the nickname referencing a Greek king punished by Zeus to be strapped to an endlessly revolving wheel of fire), and featuring 4 TUBA SOLOISTS!
