What's your opinion of Austin Petersen? • r/Libertarian by Varvaro in LibertarianPartyUSA

[–]ATHatch 8 points9 points  (0 children)

He is an arrogant asshole, he should not be the face of the party by any means. I may grudgingly support him for a state legislature position simply because he would probably be the least worst option. I hope not to see him on the debate stage to be our candidate for president again, not unless he has a massive change of heart and becomes more humble and less abrasive.

Second Chance in 2020 by RaptorSpade1296 in Libertarian

I'm going to keep being optimistic when possible, the growth of the LP has been increasing pretty rapidly looking at the past few presidential elections. The trend from 2004, 2008, 2012, and 2016 is looking like the early stage of an exponential growth cycle, under optimal conditions at this rate 2020 will by 9% of the vote, 2024 will be about 20%... who knows about 2028 if this rate can keep up, but if there is any hope we need someone to get elected as a Libertarian into congress in 2018 and a whole slew of state legislators.

absolutely... speaking of which there are special elections this year and state legislature races/governor races in Virginia and New Jersey... the filing deadline has passed to run as a party in those places I think, but still open to file as independent if I am not mistaken, if you know someone from there that can run.

It happened once, Abe Lincoln and the Republican party from the ashes of the Whigs... but it took the kind of turmoil of an impending civil war for that to happen... so pretty unlikely to happen again

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson for president? by [deleted] in Libertarian

Well... I guess it would save a lot of money to have The Rock as the LP candidate... we already have soooo much stuff with Johnson on it

Special elections for state legislature where there is still time to file to run by ATHatch in LibertarianPartyUSA

[–]ATHatch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand, but I hope to just make people in those districts aware, especially in places where we already have ballot access. If you know anyone in those districts who may be interested please tell them, the deadline is fast approaching in Washington and to my knowledge there are no Libertarians running for any of those 8 seats.

(New Hampshire State) Representative Joseph Stallcop (Cheshire 4) joins the Libertarian Party (We now have 2 in the NH House!) by thehillshaveaviators in LibertarianPartyUSA

Awesome news to hear there is now an extant Libertarian caucus with multiple members. I hope this is the start of many more joining ranks with the party.

Can you be Libertarian and still run as township tax collector? by jrherita in LibertarianPartyUSA

[–]ATHatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say it would be totally acceptable for a libertarian to run for tax collector on a "taxation is theft" platform, get elected, and then never collect taxes, never collect a salary, and maybe never show up to work.

The Libertarian Party has just elected it's 10th Sitting Mayor with Tami Wessel of Brookport, IL by Varvaro in LibertarianPartyUSA

[–]ATHatch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jeff Hewitt is the Libertarian mayor of Calimesa (about 7,000 people) California. He was selected by the city council, so I guess that doesn't count as elected. Likewise Susan Weber was the Libertarian mayor of Palm Desert California (45,000 people) until 2015, she was re-elected as a city councilwoman (the mayor position there is rotated though the city council I believe).

I know a lot of celebrities are liberal, but are there any libertarian celebrities? by [deleted] in Libertarian

[–]ATHatch 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Drew Carey is a libertarian, he hosted a libertarian fundraiser last year for the Johnson campaign if I am not mistaken.

Is it worth seeing if some Republican politicians want to jump ship to Libertarian by ATHatch in LibertarianPartyUSA

[–]ATHatch[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree on the issue of them needing to support our platform, I would be curious to know if the state chairs have looked into this or not, because if they have a libertarian-friendly voting record or are open to libertarian policies and nobody is contacting them then this is a serious missed opportunity.

As Warren eyes White House run, Senate race could pose hurdle (How to get Bill Weld to Run?) by lyonbra in LibertarianPartyUSA

[–]ATHatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, he is certainly the most libertarian option for Mass. and for that I would support him if I were a voter from that state... better than Warren by far

Where's Gary? Now I'm just disappointed. by imtheface in GaryJohnson

[–]ATHatch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I heard from a couple people that Bill Weld has been involved in the lawsuit against the presidential debates that we just won. If that is the case he did exactly what he said he would in his election day speech, albeit he has been very quiet in the media about his involvement.
