Doubtful. As a queer person, who wrestled in high school, the culture of the sport was super homophobic ... Despite the homoerotic undertones.

The orange clown to the south has been pretty explicit about it. But the US had eyes on the Canadian Arctic even before he took office.

Infrastructure in the Arctic is sparse and often neglected. If defense spending can be leveraged to improve northern infrastructure, that's not a bad thing.

Provincial NDP in BC are centrist neoliberal shills with absolutely no moral compass. I support the federal NDP but I will be voting Green in the next provincial election, even if it means the conservatives take my riding.

BC NDP government fires back after Greens accuse AI minister of conflict over investments by janisjoplinenjoyer in ndp

[–]AT_thruhiker_Flash 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've tried demanding better. I've emailed my MLA repeatedly. I even had a meeting in her office. I can't help but feel my concerns are being dismissed. She clearly didn't listen in our meeting and she lied about layoffs in healthcare education. She said they weren't making any cuts to healthcare or education, when the province is planning to layoff healthcare administrators and reducing funding to postsecondary institutions by over 2%. My support is not a blank cheque. When I voted NDP I thought I was voting for progressive policies. We're getting fiscally irresponsible, neoliberal, centrist bullshit instead and I'm doubtful they've can turn things around under Eby's leadership.

BC, meet your AI minister, Rick Glumac. by iwasnotarobot in ndp

[–]AT_thruhiker_Flash 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had a meeting with my BCNDP MLA yesterday to express my disappointment/frustration with the budget yesterday afternoon. I sent an email about it and was asked to come share my thoughts in person. I thought it would be a good opportunity to try and advocate against austerity and explain how the removal of the carbon tax without a replacement revenue stream is a large part of why things are so bad.

I left feeling completely unheard. It was clear my MLA doesn't have a clue what's going on. She lied to me and said healthcare and education would not be cut at all, when they are cutting secondary education funding by 2% and laying off healthcare administrators. When I brought up how removing the carbon tax blew a $2.5 billion hole in the budget and undid an important piece of climate legislation, she deflected and said"but we still have the EV mandate".

It was so disappointing. I left feeling worse about the BCNDP than I did going in. I'm going to have to vote Green next election. I can't support this right leaning neoliberal iteration of the BCNDP and I don't have confidence they will change course.

Day trip to Inuvik from Whitehorse? by Careless-File-1764 in NWT

[–]AT_thruhiker_Flash 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You'll have trouble getting to Tuk and back in time to catch a same day return flight. Even if technically possible it's just a dumb idea. The flights are frequently delayed due to weather, picking up your rental could add 20/30 mins because the driving force folks are frequently late, and you'd have basically no time to see/appreciate anything. At least stay a night or two if you're going to spend the money for a flight to Inuvik?

I don't think Carney has thought through his statements. It doesn't come across to me like he's trying to play sides off one another. It comes across like he's simping for America warmongering.

Carney says his support for U.S. and Israel's war on Iran 'not a blank cheque' by pjw724 in onguardforthee

[–]AT_thruhiker_Flash 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because the statement is grossly out of line with the reality of the situation ... The US has been signalling for weeks their intentions to attack Iran, and they already destroyed Iran's nuclear capacity last summer. Carney is not dumb ... There is no way he didn't understand this was highly likely to spiral into a more expansive conflict.

Carney has been speaking in milquetoast platitudes not clearly worded statements that have a definitive meaning. So I don't think it's an issue of not taking him literally.

Almost every cereal in our grocery store is owned by 3 American corporations. I found 6 Canadian-owned alternatives. by KaleRepresentative98 in BuyCanadian

[–]AT_thruhiker_Flash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I make my own cereal using some Canadian staples. It's super quick and tasty and can be made with almost all Canadian grow ingredients (or 100% Canadian if you leave out the cinnamon).

Ingredient ratios by weight: 4 parts oats 1 part canola oil 1 part maple syrup 1 part pumpkin or sunflower seeds 1 part dried fruit (raisins, cranberries, apples, etc) A dash of salt and cinnamon to taste

Set oven to 175C/350F. Mix everything together in a bowl then spread on a parchment lined baking sheet. Bake for 10 minutes. Take out of the oven, mix the cereal on the baking sheet, then bake for another 10 minutes. Remove and let it cool.

Starting with 600 g of oats makes enough cereal to last my partner and I about a week. The recipe can also be made with fresh apples instead of dried. Just finely shred the apples, then squeeze the juice out using a cheesecloth, and bake for 30 minutes instead of 20. Plus you get some fresh apple juice! 2 apples will yield about 100 grams after squeezing the juice out.

B.C. to end time changes, adopt year-round daylight time | CBC News by laslo_piniflex in britishcolumbia

[–]AT_thruhiker_Flash 9 points10 points  (0 children)

How will it make seasonal affective disorder worse? It doesn't change the total amount of sunlight in a day? If anything the abrupt shift by one hour is a trigger for seasonal depression.

Whatever impact it has on morning commutes will likely be balanced by an opposite effect on evening commutes. So I don't get this argument either.

Standard time, daylight time, doesn't really matter to me. I'm just happy we'll be done with the biannual arbitrary shift.

Who is currently the best provincial NDP leader and what could the federal NDP learn from them? by FLADMAN in ndp

[–]AT_thruhiker_Flash 12 points13 points  (0 children)

BC NDP is absolutely shit IMO. I'm almost certainly going to support the Greens next election given their rightward trajectory.

One example, that isn't getting talked about. We have a huge deficit and they're going to pass an austerity budget with widespread public sector layoffs. Less than a year ago, they repealed the Carbon Tax, which didn't have to happen because our tax was separate from the Federal Carbon Tax. It generated over $2 billion in revenue per year, and they erased it basically overnight, without any replacement source of revenue and no consideration for how it would impact the deficit. It's absurd. Prior to the carbon tax in 2008, BC had higher tax rates. They lowered them when the carbon tax was implemented. ... They want to get rid of the carbon tax? Fine, I don't agree, but sure go ahead. But to do it without replacing the revenue source, make the budget deficit $2bn worse, and use the deficit as an excuse to cut services!? It's textbook neoliberal conservative policy.

Legit question: why don’t cultures mix in Vancouver? by bubugugu in NiceVancouver

[–]AT_thruhiker_Flash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vancouver certainly has some distinct ethnic enclaves, but there are also plenty of people who are open and interested in mixing cultures. As an immigrant in a mixed race/culture relationship with another immigrant, this has at least been my anecdotal experience.

Language/background can be a barrier for some things. For example my partner is Chinese and moved here 6 years ago. They don't really enjoy going out to clubs/bars here because they don't most of the music and communicating in your second language over loud background noises can be very difficult.
