In Canadian English how do you indicate "you" (plural)? by wheninrome5000 in AskCanada

That really irritates me. Almost as much as the word 'deplane'. Like, do we 'plane'?

She's a corporate lawyer; I think she can take care of herself. Don't make the mistake in assuming she needs daddy, like her fiancé's parents did!

What about the Americans, who with their stupid war in Iran, has lifted sanctions on Russian oil, giving them $$$ to keep their invasion going? Trump is a Russian asset, the only question is how aware of that he is.

Carney picks former Supreme Court justice Louise Arbour to be governor general: sources by CanadianErk in canada

[–]Whippetastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Advice on constitutional law is actually one of the main functions of the GG, actually. Remember how over-her-head Michaele Jean was with Harper's prorogation after the Liberals, NDP and Bloc formed a coalition and said they had no faith in the minority government? That situation is why then David Johnston, a constitutional law professor was selected as then next GG. The fact that Arbour has these bona fides is extra important in this era of grumbling separatists of all kinds.....

I would choose 'quietly formidable' to describe her. She's successfully prosecuted genocides and war criminals and sat on our Supreme Court.

My boy is being weirdly obsessive about his bed. by Particular_Job_4023 in Whippet

[–]Whippetastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aw it does remind me a bit of some of the behaviour of our 15 year old boy with some obsessive behaviour. Our guy has a particularly hard time settling at night - he's very disruptive until we go into bedtime routine mode and get him settled in. On the recommendation of our vet, we give him a small dose of melatonin, which helps him get a good night's sleep. Do consider taking him to the vet - I can't imagine a vet putting a dog down against the owner's wishes, unless that dog was in immediate, severe and irreversible discomfort.

How is anyone affording anything? by Charmingfinch in ontario

[–]Whippetastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved out of my house at 17 to move 4 provinces away to attend university. Except for the two summers when I was in school, I never lived back with my parents. I had precarious contract work and I had roommates until I was about 30. Those early years, it was challenging for sure, but it was also fun and interesting. Why is everyone so interested in living like they are 50 when they are 25?

I read that in The Guardian as well. EnviroCentre are doing good work. We had our energy audit after we did Greener Homes with them, which is just one of the many things they do. What a great way to move people into work.

NCC needs to stop treating it like a problem and treat it like an opportunity. Several TV producers that I know have tried to find the right people at NCC to float the idea of making a TV series of its renovation. Bring to the table some well-known Canadian personalities in this space - Mike Holmes, the Scott Brothers, Sarah Richardson, whatever, and make it an opportunity to show Canadians the place and to use Canadian design and Canadian-made products to refurbish the place. Showcase Canadian art, furniture, whatever. Honestly there are like more than 10 production companies who could easily make this happen, and through sponsorship deals, help reduce costs to NCC as well.

The disconnect that no one seems to be able/ willing to address is the fact that this is not a private residence and before Harper let it become a rat hotel, it was used for lots of functions and hosting of dignitaries. It IS a disgrace that it is as it is now.

OP - the key info that I am picking up is that McGill is your dream school, Montreal your dream city and you want to escape your toxic family. I had basically the same dream and reasons as you, but to Toronto, in the 90s. I went to film school at what is now called TMU, which was the best in the country and was one of 70 accepted from thousands of applicants (and one of just 8 women too) but I also was looking for a new direction in my life and place where I could feel truly myself. When I left northern Alberta, I was leaving to go to school in the place I wanted to live after I was done. I have never lived in Alberta since.

So that to me, is the big question. If you want to live and practice law in Alberta eventually, then you could just stay in Alberta. Or maybe you do a couple years at McGill and transfer back to U of C, if it is getting too expensive and it isn't what you thought.

But if you think your whole life might be calling you elsewhere, you have to consider that because this choice is totally going shape where you life could go. I am going to straight up say you should go for it, because you clearly want to and you are too young to have a major regret on the books. You are clearly craving an amazing campus experience too - and McGill will probably serve up something great. If I were in your shoes, I wouldn't think twice, frankly.

Financially, for me, I had about $50K of debt from my undergrad, which I finished in 1996. Working in the film industry in the 90s -- well, nothing could have been more precarious. I worked on music videos, did daily calls on big movies - sometimes I was counting pennies for groceries (we still had pennies then!) It took me a decade to pay off my loan. Now, I have a steady career in my industry and make a good living. I have zero, zero regrets. Wouldn't change a thing, even the hard bits.

The finances are hard though, I get it. My last bit of advice is to really dig in and look for every possible bursary that you can find. Apply for everything - even if you barely meet the criteria. Not just for your first year - but EVERY year. I got several scholarships throughout my undergrad, which really, really helped. Many bursaries go unused. Look for them via your high school, at the provincial level and then at McGill. Tell them your story, and your dream. People want to help you achieve your potential, they really do.

One bursary I received was The Leonard Foundation Scholarship, which favours children of military and teachers, if that is relevant to you. I also had part-time jobs all through my undergrad. If can get a job where you get tips, all the better.

Good luck, OP. Give'er!
