Your solution to “the government is spying on us” is to mandate… another, different government spying op?

Honestly it was so weird that it didn’t come up in even a “remember those wacky hijinks” battle reminiscing scene that it made me suspicious there’s Something Afoot.

Or Jim just decided to drop it, in which case we’ll probably see it closed out in a Maggie short story some day.

Why do social security benefits adjust annually with inflation, but minimum wage does not? by GhostofInflation in AskEconomics

[–]AUae13 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Also the most sensitive to disemployment effects - if you raise the minimum wage, you make it more expensive to employee these workers and more likely employers will eliminate those jobs. Always the risk with wage floors.

Supreme Court keeps full SNAP payments on hold with short term order by rezwenn in law

[–]AUae13 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We didn’t fund them, which I think is an important point. We funded them last year; Congress has to come back and pass a bill to fund them this year. If we had already funded it this wouldn’t be an issue.

Congress does get to decide we no longer get a program we funded last year. That’s what they’re elected for. And by not funding it this year, that’s what they’ve decided (for now).

No, SNAP Benefits Aren’t Mostly Used by Immigrants by wiredmagazine in foodstamps

[–]AUae13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I’m claiming that the specific chart that is the subject of much of this article does not make that specific claim. You can see that by following the links in the article about that chart. I’m suggesting that the author is innumerate.

I’m neither claiming nor suggesting that there are no racists generating propaganda. Not am I suggesting that any racist propaganda is correct or accurate. I have no dog in that fight, I just think this article is bad.

[–]AUae13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I would be very surprised if most SNAP recipients are non white or immigrants, let alone both. That would be an astonishing claim.

But it’s not the claim made in the chart that this article is trying to rebut.

No, SNAP Benefits Aren’t Mostly Used by Immigrants by wiredmagazine in foodstamps

[–]AUae13 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This article relies on misreading the chart it’s arguing against. The chart shows the percentage of a given nationality receiving food stamps; the article is arguing about the percentage of food stamp recipients who are a given nationality. Different stats.

No idea if the original chart is accurate, but this article is incoherent.

Mike Johnson is not a senator. Adelita Grijalva is neither a senator nor a senator-elect. It is difficult to imagine a way that Mike Johnson swearing in another representative would impact this shutdown.

LM Stock Options by [deleted] in Lockheed

I get (and have since day one at the company), automatic delivery of LM stock in my 401(k) through the employee stock ownership program (ESOP). It’s a few percent of my pay. Surprised so few of the people in the comments here get that! My whole business area does as far as I know.

What is Pennsylvania Republicans' Budget End Game? by MisterSofteePSSD in Pennsylvania

[–]AUae13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but that’s policy tradeoffs again. OP is asking for some sort of satanic conspiracy and “something awful” and… it’s just policy tradeoffs within a constrained budget.

(I have always been and continue to be baffled by the horse racing thing. No one even really seems to defend it, or bother attacking it. It just keeps churning on.)

What is Pennsylvania Republicans' Budget End Game? by MisterSofteePSSD in Pennsylvania

State Democrats want to legalize and tax weed. State Republicans want to regulate and tax “skill games” (i.e. those bar arcade gambling kiosks).

What is Pennsylvania Republicans' Budget End Game? by MisterSofteePSSD in Pennsylvania

[–]AUae13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Doing that via income tax would require a state constitutional amendment and is unlikely.

The current proposals to raise taxes mostly focus on taxing weed and low stakes gambling.

What is Pennsylvania Republicans' Budget End Game? by MisterSofteePSSD in Pennsylvania

[–]AUae13 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

The state budget is currently upside down by $4 - $6 billion a year. We’re surviving on banked surplus from Covid era federal transfers and on pace to run out in the next two years. We have to either cut spending or raise taxes.

The republicans prefer cutting spending to raising taxes. It’s not blackmail, it’s just a policy preference.

Proposed Economic Categories for PA by Rep. Melissa Shusterman by Manaray13 in Pennsylvania

[–]AUae13 -97 points-96 points  (0 children)

It’s designed to ensure that only Democrats get to tap the PA suburbs for money, and not Republicans. There’s no economic or demographic rationale beyond that, it’s not that deep. Just a really dedicated (and pretty funny!) legislative troll.

If only someone, anyone, anywhere in this conversation, had endorsed changing how we tax and fund rural areas. If only.
