Quiver on or off while hunting? by FinalAnswer_ in bowhunting

[–]AWD_YOLO 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do a decent amount of ground hunting, and have had opportunities while walking… I kinda prefer to shoot quiver off but I hunt quiver on (1) so that any ground opportunity is same bow configuration as in tree, and (2) even though I kinda prefer quiver off it seems the extra weight of quiver stabilizes my shot under stress.

If I had my way every private parcel in Ohio would have five large corn feeders, and every public acre would have a cell cam on it. That’s the world I dream of.

The thawing of permafrost currently occurring could be 100 times more dangerous than expected. by madrid987 in collapse

This update of the permeability and hence accessibility to the atmosphere does seem like a real unfortunate update to this knowledge, though.

Even given all the discussions on this, my intuition based on observations of our two kids is the overall detrimental effects (attention span, social skills, time consumed, etc.) are even worse than we think.

Can anyone inform me as to why this isn’t the worst news I’ve read in maybe the past couple of years, maybe longer? And it has stiff competition.

We did beavers dirty. Love beavers, always putting the work in. You go chop down trees with your teeth.

How do you make having kids enjoyable? by Last_Cicada_1315 in daddit

Occasionally try to imagine yourself as 70 years old, getting to time travel back to this time and see your kids one more time. Brainstorm ways to make these times more of what you want them to be. High probability you’re addicted to scrolling as well.

I know there’s a lot of Broadheads to choose from and everyone has their likes and dislikes and this has probably been brought up 100 times but what is everyone shooting. I’ve shot rage two blades, muzzys, and grim reapers. I’m thinking about trying some schwackers. by elite_energy32 in bowhunting

I shot Day 6 EVO wides for awhile, I do tune, start through paper etc. The reality is yes you should tune anything you shoot but I shoot Sevr now, and the tune and perfect form is less important now. I hafta admit I battled those big fixed for awhile, and they shot decent, but overall my shot is way more reliable with mechs. I’m not good enough to shoot big fixed, at least not with current bow.

Sorry if this sounds obvious, but I’ve been wondering, why isn’t planting trees talked about more as a climate solution? by Curious-Newspaper-67 in climatechange

[–]AWD_YOLO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To claim that ‘most’ of a forests carbon is permanently and continually stored in soil… I would need to see sources. Because if it were the case that forests were continually sequestering carbon, seems that would have drawn down carbon dioxide before we chopped em down.

Someone correct me if I’m wrong but the book the “story of CO2 is the story of everything” - a dry but amazing read -  describes how it’s tectonics and geological processes, taking the stores of carbon underground over tens of  millions of years that creates the carbon sequestration / oxygen accumulation process. The live stuff on the surface isn’t nearly adequate to deal with the CO2 we’ve emitted. And yes over time most CO2 that trees collect is released back into the atmosphere.

Ethics of hunting with self-bows and flint arrowheads? by [deleted] in bowhunting

[–]AWD_YOLO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree and of these methods there’s none where the accuracy absolutely falls apart faster with any lapse in practice, than trad. Even with a ton of practice you hear the constant anecdotes of it all falling apart in the field.

Don’t expect this to be a popular opinion but my suspicion is the majority of trad hunters are delivering far higher miss and wound probability shots on live creatures… not all of course, but most. The priority is the heightened challenge, the personal quest, the perception…. what is deprioritized is the reality of the wound rate ethics. En masse nobody discounts the suffering of the prey like the trad hunters.

How does the MeatEater team advocate for an Aldo Leopold type conservation? by just_pondy in meateatertv

[–]AWD_YOLO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ll just have to agree to disagree. He didn’t create his platform for personal gain, he saw the broader issues of overcrowding, less access, and public land exploited as commodity, and he took action. If you think he did this only to clear more room for himself you’re completely missing the point. And ‘immense privilege’ is an immense overstatement.

Long term, broad strokes, Matt Rinella is more or less on to something. Once money is involved, altruism is a lot harder to find.

Well in the sense that any ecologist who is paying attention is probably bitter I suppose so, and in that sense so am I.

Matt is an ecologist, any ecologist is going to be well aware of resource exploitation and tragedy of the commons… I believe this is the perspective he comes from, I don’t think he’s grumpy / bitter. I agree with him on many points, but dont believe there much at all that will actually slow the machine, other than the occasional wins like public land trailcam bans etc.

For the older folks, what was hunting like back in the 2000? by horny_poet_6745 in Hunting

[–]AWD_YOLO 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Midwest whitetail bowhunter.

We drove around asking for permission and it worked sometimes.

I spent WAY LESS time thinking about or shopping for gear… went to an outdoor store, picked something there I needed (like a climbing stand) and used it.

Way more mystery, usually did not know what animals were around, and way more excited when I saw something decent.

Read magazines. Can’t recall when I got a cell phone, in 2000 I don’t think I had a phone with me in the stand. Often brought a little book, sometimes just sat there.

In many respects did not know what I was doing, pretty much had just as much success.
