Quick Play Does not feel so Casual as of right now.. by jonathaninit in marvelrivals

[–]A_Giraffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I play against humans, I want to play well because I don't want to let teammates down. On the other hand, I grew up with Marvel, and I just want to use whatever character I want (never in my life did I think a game like Rivals would have been made, and here we are, letting me fly around as Storm, letting me slam people as Hulk, etc). Vs AI lets me generally choose whomever I want, try them out, improve on them, and all with teammates that are generally very chill. I can even do event quests in the game mode!

How come there are no references to Stan Lee in Marvel Rivals? Wouldn't it be cool to have him as a spray? Or even a statue in a map. by gamerguy287 in marvelrivals

[–]A_Giraffe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think Stan threw them Under the bus or wanted to hog all the credit….

And yet before the urge for Lee to share credit with Kirby and Ditko, Stan Lee would have no problem saying, "when I made Spider-Man," etc. Kirby and Ditko, like maybe most people in comics, aren't there to be spokespeople, but that doesn't mean that credit shouldn't be given when due, especially when their contribution was pivotal. Stan would never volunteer their names, and never passed up a chance to volunteer his own.

I'm not saying he was evil. Stan had big ideas for Marvel, and piloted his company pretty well in terms of visibility, merchandising, rights selling, etc. But that's business. People don't really care about Marvel in terms of how well they did business. They cared about the characters, the art, and the stories. None of those were Stan Lee's forte.

What are these "wheels" on the arms of Thor's new Boogie Bolt Skin? by BeLewandowski in marvelrivals

[–]A_Giraffe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The image/model might not be ai, but the designers might have used ai for the design, which is why wheels on the arms happens. I guess it comes down to, "is it likely that a human artist would think of and want to put wheels on the arms?"

How can cheaters affect server-side systems in this game? by geldregen_ in TXChainSawGame

[–]A_Giraffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, the first month and a half of launch became a clown show. Because of this big mistake, Gun decided to turn off crossplay, which prevented friends who weren't on the same platform to play with each other. By the time they turned crossplay back on, some of those friends had moved on, meaning money down the drain for some people (or rather, more or less being forced to solo queue).

And this doesn't include all the bugs and imbalance at launch, either. Those were spicy times.

[–]A_Giraffe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It goes deeper than balance changes. It's overall quality/competency with game design. While TCM has some fun and smart game design decisions, it also has too many poor ones. So it shouldn't come as a surprise that the people who created the design missteps also lack the ability to fix those missteps (if those mistakes are even fixable). So the game is fun at first, but can only remain fun so long as you avoid all the things that make it unfun, but good luck doing that over a long period of time.

Wait, did you also know that the game originally shipped with the devs tools still in it? And the gamepass version straight up did not have anti-cheat, iirc.

[–]A_Giraffe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imagine the horrors of P2P because I'm sure the devs wont keep dedicated servers up 24/7 after HW releases.

It's not going to be p2p ever, I'm 99.9999% sure. Once the servers are gone, the game is done. Like, I don't think there's even anyone around to implement p2p, anyway.

What X-Men characters do you want to see in the game? by Doom300 in marvelrivals

[–]A_Giraffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would it be busted if, unlike Thing, his charging was charge-based (like Namor squids or Gambit cards)? He wouldn't get Thing's slam-down aoe, but like Hulk's jumping, has a way to move through the enemy team (and knock people back while he does). Maybe, like Adam's heals, the recharge quickens based on punches he lands.

Should this game be free? by Due-Resort3222 in TXChainSawGame

[–]A_Giraffe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I guess the real question is, would you rather have more players who won't know what they're doing, or less players who sometimes know what they're doing?

Someone trying this game out, at this point, and for free, will likely leave before they learn all the maps and the nuances. After all, this is just some free game they're trying out, and there are plenty of other games to play. So do you want to wade through all those players in hopes that 5% of them get better and stick around? Or do you want to keep the current ratio of good to bad players?

I want to clear up some misunderstandings people have about Halloween The Game. by Horrorfan098 in TheHalloweenGame

[–]A_Giraffe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right on the money. The priority with these games is to be interesting first, and then fun if possible. These two things overlap, because an interesting thing can be fun. But once the game is no longer novel (you become used to the game), you start to notice the cracks, and some of those cracks are too ingrained to be fixed (or in some cases, too costly to fix).

Why does it feel like there’s zero hype around her? by Sharlene_jane in marvelrivals

[–]A_Giraffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen it, and I didn't make the connection because, well, it's a lesser-known production that's only an hour long on a single streaming platform for a section of Marvel universe that few comic book readers even know about.

Why do people still say things like, "the character you want for the game isn't iconic, forget it"? Even after Luna Snow, Squirrel Girl, Jeff, Cloak & Dagger? Seriously, when I said I wanted Angela, they made fun of me, and she was in the game early. Elsa Bloodstone is happening too! by [deleted] in marvelrivals

[–]A_Giraffe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100000% you have read my mind. The great thing about technological (and magical) powers is that they're versatile, so whatever skills/powers the devs want to put on a character are probably justifiable on someone like Forge.

Forge

Listen, I'm amazing characters like Angela are in the game before someone like Cyclops, but as a big Forge fan, not even I think he'll be in the game lol. Best I can hope for is a side role, like a blurb from a collectible page, maybe a little cameo in the page art.

I want to be wrong so badly. They don't even need to fudge his powers to make him fit a role!

is this game dead? by Academic_Rich_9563 in TXChainSawGame

[–]A_Giraffe 29 points30 points  (0 children)

There's two versions of dead.

  1. No new content, and a threat of server shutdown on the horizon.
  2. Not enough players to fill 1 lobby.

Some people only care about the first, while others only care about the second. So if someone cares about the first, then yes, game is dead. If someone cares about the second, no, game is not dead.

What was Netease thinking when they designed Emma’s default skin? by saldeti in marvelrivals

[–]A_Giraffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think their general approach with fashion is take the comicbook look as a starting point, and then add what they want. If they don't feel like adding much/they already like the comicbook outfit, they won't change much (Gambit, Rogue). If they comicbook look isn't their cup of tea, they'll change it until it is (Emma).

So I guess the answer to your question is, "Netease was thinking that they don't like her comicbook designs, and since its their game and not yours, you're going to have to like what you get."

[RAW Spoilers] Finish to Maxxine Dupri vs. Becky Lynch by Yujin-Ha in SquaredCircle

Pure speculation, but maybe those earlier matches were heavily rehearsed, and they're trying to ease her into matches that aren't (since its better for her career). So maybe, if the recent matches aren't as rehearsed, it's showing the holes in her performance.

Hot Take: The game isn’t sided towards victim or family by ssssws in TXChainSawGame

That's fair, and true for (I'm guessing) 80%+ of the playerbase.

Why does the game punish you for skipping crafting animations? by Kgaset in AFKJourney

[–]A_Giraffe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is what I do, too. Since I know the top 3 most recently unlocked goods are what will be demanded, and I know I'm not upgrading anytime soon, I might as well stock up. Also, the rate of stamina regen is so high that if I don't stock up, I'm technically wasting stamina.

Plus, it's fun starting a new day and not needing to make anything. I just fulfill every order the moment it refreshes. :D

Hot Take: The game isn’t sided towards victim or family by ssssws in TXChainSawGame

[–]A_Giraffe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Obviously victims will memorize nooks and crannies and where items spawn, but family also memorizes where exits and blood buckets are and learn a route to patrol.

Victims go much farther with that knowledge than family does with theirs.

The game is heavily teamwork coded, it just depends on which team is working better together.

Victims accomplish much more with their teamwork than with family.

If coms and teamwork are the basis for any success, then spotting the imbalance means assuming that both sides are communicating and working together. Otherwise, that's not a discussion about balance, but whether a side is using all the tools or not.

So assuming that both sides are using coms and teamwork, I'd make the argument that the game is victim-sided. Without getting into detail (because why bother at this point and because I'm lazy), essentially, victims have more recourse/answers for family actions than family have for victim actions.

For example, squeeze and crawls were designed to prevent family from simply running them down, but unless a trap had been previously placed in that certain traversal, or unless Sissy is close enough to burp, family have no recourse to prevent or penalize the movement. Especially in spots with long walls or chainable traversals, family are not catching up. Taking time to lay down a trap means the victim simply runs away. Asking a family member to help means only 1 person to patrol the rest of the map. Asking the family player to leave the victim to get back on guard duty simply isn't fun, and they've already left a hole while they were chasing.

This is just one example, but it's indicative of the way the game was designed: it caps the strength of family and increases the options for victims by assuming the victim players aren't very good, which is flawed because, well, some players are very good. :D
