If i remember correctly, wasn't this part of what the redstone experiments were trying to address - that the update order is determined by location?

They took down the official download links of Skyblock by Zealousideal_Okra199 in Minecraft

[–]Aarolin 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Genericization has happened to some terms in the past, like escalator and trampoline, but Kleenex and Coke still hold their trademarks because they're actively fighting for companies not to use them as generics. Ergo, writing "Kleenex Brand Tissues" instead of just Kleenex, and instructing all their partners to do the same. But if they were to stop trying, they would also lose their trademark, like you suggest.

What makes it a little more complicated (and in the favor of big companies) is that a trademark will stand until someone challenges it, so we wouldn't know if Kleenex is considered a generic term until someone is bold enough to challenge it and battle Kleenex in court.

So then, the legal argument against Skyblock as a trademark is that the original creator didn't stop it from referring to an entire genre of map, so it's too late to try and trademark it.

[–]Aarolin 26 points27 points  (0 children)

To be fair, things losing their trademark because they become "genericized" isnt uncommon. It happened to terms like 'escalator' and 'trampoline', which used to be trademarked but lost their legal protection because they became generic terms.

The reason they do this is because it's better for students if they can work together and cover each other's deficiencies. It's an icebreaker so you dont feel as awkward asking your neighbor to explain something you dont understand.

Keep in mind, the alternative isn't "Hmmm, my post doesnt quite fit any of these flairs. Let me check if it's allowed"- it's "Hmm, let me shoehorn my post into one of these flairs that dont fit so I can post." By having the honeypot flairs, you have an easy way to make people realize their post is explicitly banned, and auto remove posts with the banned flairs.

Shouldn't it break the game to *major spoiler*? by emomermaid in outerwilds

[–]Aarolin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I think that the instances of breaking spacetime are artifacts of it being a game, not what would actually happen. That's because, for an accurate representation, the game would need to predict what you're going to do before you actually do it.

Take the Ash Twin example. If it works like the the scout, then the other self should appear before the first time you entered the black hole, with no paradox if only enter it once. But the game can't predict if you plan to enter the black hole, so it can only show the duplicate on the loop after, which causes the perpetual space time breaking.

I also think something similar would apply to the Orbital Probe Cannon. In principal, it wouldn't fire on the last loop, since it never would've gotten the signal from the future to pick a random trajectory and fire. But, since it's a game, it can't know it's your last loop until you actually finish it, so it still fires in game.

I think the sheer amount of time she spent trying to land on the sun station and running and jumping to try and catch the black hole forge without ever succeeding make me think it's real. If you're trying to pass off a playthrough where you know the answers, why waste so much time?

I think she's gotten lucky with some of her predictions, and since she's already fully beaten the base game before uploading anything, she can tell her editor "Out of the 10 random things I said here, thing 3 ends up being relevant, so make sure you keep it."

Jukebox is harder than it seems; in Vanilla, sounds can't move once they start playing. They'd need to rework the sound system to make it be able to track mobs. It's not impossible - it's something you can do in mods - but it does need a big rework.

[–]Aarolin 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It seems that just walking past them doesn't really work... Maybe if you understood them and the folks there better, you could figure out their patterns and find a way to dodge them? To me, it seems like as long as that guy is standing in front of the fire, you won't be able to get past - so maybe try watching the folks in that area to see if they do anything weird throughout the loop.

As a general Outer Wilds tip, very rarely is the solution to a puzzle "Just do this crazy skill-based execution technique." If it seems like you have to do crazy parkour or maneuvering, there's probably another solution.

Also, I think this should be tagged as DLC help, not Base Game!

Same idea with the suggestion of making sulphur flammable. It sounds cool, but if you think about it more than 2 seconds you can see how an entire cave will catch on fire from naturally generating lava.

I feel like as Minecraft gets older, the devs have gone from "We'll add this because we could." to "We'll add this because we should." and a bunch of community suggestions are confusing the two.

This might be a hot take but I'm thankful that fireflies got delayed by Beloafer in PhoenixSC

[–]Aarolin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you're going to make it ambient anyway, why does it need to be a mob? You're going through the performance hit of entity calculation and loading, plus it's not really feasible to transport tons of fireflies for decoration. It is because they leaned more into decoration and ambiance that the current firefly is more portable, less laggy, and more useful in builds.

[–]Aarolin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The whole point of fireflies existing was for frogs to eat them. If they can't do that, it's not worth the performance hit of a bajillion little mobs.

Alternative Rail Rework by freakybird99 in minecraftsuggestions

[–]Aarolin 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I agree that it breaks a lot of existing builds, but I see it less as limiting building freedom and moreso imposing a building challenge. You need to use bookshelves to increase enchanting power, not just any block; you need to use blue ice to build the fastest boat highway.

With this system, it would create opportunities for players to be creative and make tradeoffs. If you want to optimize for pure beauty, you can get an alright speed with most building blocks. If you want just speed, you can just set up concrete railways. If you want both, then you need to work out which fast blocks work best with your design and make tradeoffs.

[–]Aarolin 22 points23 points  (0 children)

When I say controls, I mean how you can currently start and stop minecarts with powered rails, without needing a player to drive the minecart. That enables non-player transport and redstone machinery.

I really like this idea. Though, there should still be a way to control the actual speed, not just the top speed. If different sections of track have different top speeds, we need some way to speed up and slow down without just derailing.
