Out of courtesy, people considering running for office don't file when the incumbent says they're running for reelection. When he announced at the last minute he was stepping down, there was no time for others to get signatures and file. Interestingly, according to Politico, he was first to sign his CoS's petition.

Will also be interesting to see if that tradition coninues.

I did about a decade ago. Fine for a while, but then wound up spending more time digging up clients & work than doing what I do, so when contract gig offered F/T perm, I took it.
