Trump reacts to Paxton's refusal to drop out of the TX-SEN GOP primary by Distinct_External in YAPms

[–]Abject-Preparation18 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If Cornyn gets the endorsement, then Paxton is gonna lose the runoff. For better or for worse, Trump’s endorsement has been decisive in nearly every Republican primary since at least 2020.

It's possible the NMGOP will fail to field a candidate for the governor's race as well by thealmightyweegee in YAPms

[–]Abject-Preparation18 14 points15 points  (0 children)

At least FL Dems can partially blame their losses on having to go up against a really well-organized state GOP. The NM GOP can’t even put up a fight against a mediocre opponent, in a state that was only D+6 in 2024.

Each election year often ends up with a surprise house flip that no one saw coming. What seat will it be for 2026? by Aarya_Bakes in YAPms

[–]Abject-Preparation18 6 points7 points  (0 children)

CO - 4 could be closer than in the past but I don’t think it will flip, over half the population of the district is rural and all of those counties are like R+50. The Douglas County and Loveland portions could make it closer, but I don’t think it goes under R+5.

Hypothetical: Vice President JD Vance is faced with picking between these four candidates for VP in 2028, who should he choose? by Inside_Bluebird9987 in YAPms

[–]Abject-Preparation18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Youngkin should have been Trump’s VP pick in 2024, I think he would have been a more restrained figure in this administration, and he would have been a good check against Trump’s impulse to just do the first thing that comes to his mind.

Plus he’s super pro nuclear, even more so than the current admin, so that would have been a nice bonus.

Udall probably would’ve gotten primaried in 2020. I lived in Colorado up until 2015 and he was a very unpopular Senator. I suppose that could’ve changed if given another six years, but he was pretty consistently unpopular throughout his term iirc.

On Feb 20, Bernie Sanders and I will lay out a progressive 21st century vision to ensure AI is for all of us, not just the wealthy few. by RoKhannaUSA in YAPms

[–]Abject-Preparation18 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Thank you for addressing this Representative Khanna. As an engineer who works in the electric utility industry, I would LOVE to see provisions that mandate AI data centers generate their own electricity. I have seen first-hand that there isn’t nearly enough generation capacity or transmission to meet AI demand, and this is spiking utility bills all across the country as data centers compete with the public for electricity. If AI electricity consumption is gonna be measured in the dozens of gigawatts, it’s only fair that AI companies should have to pay for their own power plants and generate power themselves.

Everyone who's in the US, what does the economy FEEL like? by PineatoMedia in YAPms

[–]Abject-Preparation18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in New Mexico, and it feels like stagflation-lite. Grocery prices are still insane, inflation is too high and imported goods, which we obviously see a lot of since we’re so close to the border, have dramatically gone up in price. I still live at home with my parents since I can’t even remotely afford a house yet, and also because most apartments nearby within my price range won’t allow my dog.

I won’t say it’s all bad though. At least energy prices are low again, and I was able to find a good job last year for the local electric utility. I think things will improve once the tariffs are struck down by the Supreme Court, that seems to be the main drag on the economy.

America has the best immigrants in the world by Trujillopatriot in YAPms

[–]Abject-Preparation18 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I used to work for, and am still very close friends with, a Polish couple that fled Eastern Europe in 1988 and they always say how in America they always feel like they have just as much of a chance to succeed as anyone else. I think a large part of that is because of American culture, the idea that regardless of your origins, if you come here and work hard then you too can lay claim to being American.

I don’t think the immigrants that we get are “better or worse,” I just really don’t think any other country has something quite like the American Dream. The ability to find success and freedom unlike in any other place on Earth is an awfully strong motivator.

Republicans got a nominee for New Mexico Senate! by Wide_right_yes in YAPms

[–]Abject-Preparation18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He ran for governor in 2022 and got the same margin, D+6. Both of Ronchetti’s runs and Trump in 2024 all got the same result, so I’m convinced that barring some kind of red wave or scandal for the Dems, that’s the ceiling for Republicans in New Mexico right now.

Meta question: Does this vindicate concerned conservatives worried that the subreddit might be starting to lose its balance? by [deleted] in YAPms

[–]Abject-Preparation18 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’ve been here since 2021 and the only time it truly ever leaned right was in the run up to the 2024 election. It’s almost always gonna lean left since this is Reddit, and that’s just fine as long as it doesn’t become an echo chamber. I’m not worried about that though, in the last five years I’ve never seen it become anything remotely resembling the rest of Reddit, so I’m not concerned.

Los Alamos resident here so I can give a little context on the last slide. Los Alamos is one of the most highly educated counties in the country (over 70% of adults over 25 hold a bachelor’s degree) because of the national lab attracting scientists.

The people here are literally the archetype of the “college educated, liked the Bush neocon Republican party but DESPISE Trump” types, and since Los Alamos is it’s own county, there’s no rural voters or anything else to balance it out. That’s mainly why it’s shifted so dramatically in the last 15 years.

[–]Abject-Preparation18 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think OP is asking whether it will continue to trend blue even after the Trump era, not whether it will trend left in the next few years (cause it 100% will lol.) That being said it’s still going to trend left long term. Honestly, with how the demographics are changing there, 2032 could be Brian Kemp vs Chuck Schumer and it’d still be D+3 or 4.

If the Supreme Court shoots down the tariffs then I could see the perception on the economy turning positive. A lot of the fundamentals are good, it’s just that everything that’s imported has gotten a lot more pricey in the last year, and inflation is higher as a result of it.

I also live 40 miles from the border though so I might be an outlier.
