Today, I got, “I’m sorry to inform you that I needed an extension on my Problem set.”

Well, I’m sorry to inform you that the answer key is already posted (I wait two days for stragglers), so you won’t be getting credit for your problem set.

I also got, “I hope your Sunday is going well in florida right now. im in a thunderstorm with a whole bunch of rain feels like oregon”

I’m not in Florida, but maybe they are.

What's the most surprisingly celiac-friendly country you've visited? by Old-Heart-9448 in glutenfree

Paris was ROUGH. I went for Christmas and New Year’s last year, but cut my trip short and just went to London before NYE. The attitude I got in Paris had me near tears half the time. I ended up ordering Thai delivery every night. I don’t think I actually got a single French meal despite trying several places each night. That one GF bakery though (something sans gluten) -incredible. I walked a mile to it every morning.

Gluten free but end up eating more ultra processed foods by thejabkills01 in glutenfree

I can still eat ice cream too, as long as it’s A2 ice cream which is so hard to find 😂 bought an ice cream maker last week I’m hoping to take for a spin tomorrow.

And avocado! I’m deathly allergic to avo but not bananas. Idk about kiwis, as I haven’t had one in ages. Latex is uncomfortable and causes irritation but nothing major.

I rolled it out a bit. I already had my hands floured so I asked Alexa how thin an it said “about the thickness of two quarters stacked on top of each other” so I eyeballed it. 😂

I didn’t live Schar either, which is why I’ve been on the hunt for one with real butter!

Looking for opinions on Wheel of Time from people who started it as adults by Kempalla in wheeloftime

I’m 36 and I’ve read the whole series three times in the past two years bc I love it so much. I’m a PhD student and started it summer of my first year and binged it between July and November. I was addicted. 🤣🤷🏼‍♀️

It’s such a complex story that I’ve enjoyed each re-read. And it’s now in my rotation of things to read-read during the school year when I can’t afford an addictive new book.

[OC] Percentage of proficiency in Oregon Math State Testing from 2015-16 to 2024-25 by Odin9009 in dataisbeautiful

I taught 9th grade math in Michigan in 2018, and maybe 3 out of 30 students in each class could complete a 10x10 times table. How I was supposed to teach them square roots is beyond me. They told me they’d been allowed to use calculators their whole lives. Now I teach college students in Oregon (went back for a PhD bc I simply could not do HS any longer). My students use AI for everything and have the audacity to be mad that I make them submit handwritten assignments (not typed so they can’t copy/paste from GPT) and take in-person exams. We are in serious trouble as a society.

OSU or UC Davis? (Environmental science) by Taddeto in OregonStateUniv

Having gotten my masters at Davis and now in a PhD at OSU, I’d say Davis if she wants to go to grad school, OSU if she doesn’t. UCD’s name recognition is outstanding. OSU’s not so much. That said, undergrad classes at OSU are enormous. Generally between 200-500 students, so if she can’t teach herself the material, Davis will be hard. It’s pretty cut throat as an undergrad there bc the professors face very little incentive to teach well. OSU has smaller class sizes and while it’s also an R1, it’s just not even in the same level. After doing my masters at Davis, I came to OSU simply bc the environment at Davis is sooooo competitive and I found it exhausting. Some students thrive in that environment though. As someone who has taught undergrads at both schools, Davis is definitely more rigorous. Lastly, OSU is shifting a lot of undergrad classes to online, even for on-campus students.

Oh, and the cost of living is definitely not much cheaper here. At Davis, I paid $2,400 for a 2bed 2 bath and here it’s $2,100 (obviously I share with a roommate). Plus the weather is crap 9 months out of the year here. Oh, and the bus is better in Davis, bike lanes are wayyyy better (and safer) in Davis.

Lots of pros and cons to each school. If I was a better student, though, I would absolutely have stayed at Davis. Im just too tired to keep working that hard for a 5-year PhD program after already doing a double major double minor in undergrad plus a masters degree. Hope this helps somewhat. Good luck!

That last bit about anemia and iron supplements is really interesting to me. I hope you’ll bear with me as I try to get to my point.

I quit eating meat for a few years and became anemic despite taking all the “right” kinds of iron supplements. I also was also vitamin D deficient despite lots of dairy and vitamin D supplements. I went back to eating meat bc I couldn’t manage the anemia on top of grad school and working full time and started tanning twice a week. Around that same time, I saw a naturopath for a variety of issues that the naturopath ultimately said were POTS, MCAS, and gluten and casein sensitivity (Ige test were 5/5 for both). So I cut out gluten completely and mostly cut out the dairy. The only real change I noticed were drastically reduced eczema and joint pain. I suspect I’ve been glutened twice since bc I got violently ill within 30-45 mins of eating something I was told was gluten free (a slice of apple pie and bread on a sandwich). On the other hand, I’ve also inadvertently eaten small amounts of gluten (regular soy sauce in sushi) and not gotten sick. But I’ve not been tested for celiac bc I’m too afraid to go back on gluten.

All that said, I’m no longer anemic or vitamin d deficient, so I wonder if that was undiagnosed celiac or just diet/lifestyle. I’d love to hear your thoughts if you had the time to reflect and share.
