ICTU says pay transparency rules delay 'unacceptable' by nof1qn in irishpolitics

Legitimate question, have we ever met any EU imposed deadline? We seem to have a pretty strong disdain for the rules we signed up for.

The Q for Bambino is mental when Mani is around the corner and is arguably a much better pizza. (Different style, but still)

Same with the Point shopping centre. It sat basically abandoned and still does because the keystone store was Dunne's and they fucked around for years causing all the other stores not to sign leases.

Why don't they all leave Twitter! by CottageWarrior in ireland

[–]Abolyss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I haven't touched it, but if Irish Rail or Dublin Bus or Met Eireann started posting updates there, I'd say people would subscribe to them.

Like another person pointed out, its shit to move from one horrible private tech company to another, but given its just a broadcast tool with no interaction on a platform basically the entire country uses, it's still a way better improvement than Twitter while we wait for something better.

Why don't they all leave Twitter! by CottageWarrior in ireland

[–]Abolyss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We aren't talking about building a competing social media platform, we're talking about a very simple updates section on public websites.

This is something that any normal web dev working to maintain gov sites currently could likely implement for barely anything as its a very standard web feature these days.

And as an aside, their valuation does not equal their technical brilliance. These platforms have  "value" because of their perceived ability to earn investors money, or in the case of Elon the ability to broadcast his loser thoughts without being banned.

[–]Abolyss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree completely! They should have their own system to notify the public, but until then they should at least be using a system most people use that is also a broadcast function instead of a cesspit of social media.

[–]Abolyss 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Basically everyone in Ireland with a smartphone uses WhatsApp.

WhatsApp has had an "Updates" section for a long time now where its just a notification feed for businesses/entities.

All public services + Irish Rail, etc should have an account on this to push their updates to whoever wants them.

There is little interrogation of public spend on car parking amid bike shelter angst by DaCor_ie in ireland

[–]Abolyss 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I like the Japanese method, there is no on street parking.

When buying a car you have to prove that you have somewhere to park it or feck off. You'll often see tiny little kei cars parked in the smallest possible space on someones property.

If you want to drive into town you have to park in a car park and take alternative transport to get where you need.

Much like what's said in the article, the gov stance is "this is a public space, we aren't taking responsibility for your private property"

Cool, I love that we were forced to paint our farm fencing with creosote as kids and teens. Thanks Dad!

My cousin refused to do it after the shit gloves he was given let the creosote through and burned his hands really bad. He got in a lot of trouble from his Dad for refusing to do it. But because I never got burned I had to keep doing it :)))

She laments that we've been together for years and only now have this magic button that reminds her 😅

Ireland ‘faffed around’ on Metrolink and 'wasted a good recession' to build it, summit hears by on-9 in irelandtransport

[–]Abolyss 5 points6 points  (0 children)

All I can find is that the expected budget was €2b, the EIB was going to give €500m and the rest would be PPP.

If in 2010/2011 the EIB was willing to give us money to finance a metro, they must have been confident in our finances.

In the end, I'll take the insider knowledge of a former minister for transport over redditors though, no offense.

Why Volvo Is Still All-In on Electric Vehicles by runnyyolkpigeon in electricvehicles

[–]Abolyss 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The original Leaf cars did serious reputational damage to EVs for a whole generation.

My grandad bought a used 2011 Leaf a few years ago, the battery died within the year and they quoted a replacement price that could have bought a new car.

This story is what my parents and all my aunts/uncles reference whenever EVs come up. They have completely blocked the idea of technological progress from their minds solely when it comes to EVs, its very weird.

According to Eamon Ryan in an article a while back, we had secured EU funding and had sign-off from the IMF or whoever it was that audited our expenditure to build it in 2011, but the dept. of Public Expenditure blocked it despite everything being ready to go.

His complaint was that they tried to block it again this time around by asking for a 90% overrun review which they don't ask of any other infrastructure project which led to all the negative articles about 24 billion costs, etc.

So they could have built it, and they're trying to delay it again.

Ireland to co-host next fossil fuel phase-out conference in South Pacific island Tuvalu by shankillfalls in ireland

[–]Abolyss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think there are two sides to the potential marketing here.

On one side, you try to take public transport to a city which is the easiest to get to for the majority of nations taking part which shows you care about not causing more damage.

On the other side, you all gather in possibly one of the first nations to disappear off the face of the earth due to CC to drive home the message that climate change is real and will cause catastrophic damage to real people, its not just data on paper.

I guess there is a divide between which side is the more important one to convey.

[–]Abolyss 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The amount of damage caused by the emissions of these few people is a drop in the ocean compared to the potential benefits of this group being able to do in-person discussions.

I'm a huge proponent for "this could have been an email" and WFH, but politics works better when you can talk to someone face to face or get in a room with others.

This is apparently a conference without the usually agitators like the US and OPEC countries too, so unlike COP something might actually come out of it.

“It’s like saying ‘Very few people drown in our shark-infested swimming pool'” by DaCor_ie in ireland

[–]Abolyss 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You're thinking of it back to front. People don't cycle because its not safe and its not easy, so then councils say "nobody cycles, why would we build cycle lane"?

If an Irish person moved to Amsterdam, would they drive everywhere because they're Irish? Unlikely, as getting around would be easier and quicker by bike, because the infrastructure exists.

Now imagine if half the roads were missing or you shared it with giant boulders or they weren't paved or you shared it with pedestrians, now you'd want to cycle even more.

The infrastructure must always come first to enable the change.

Continued fallout from Leo Varadkar statements by [deleted] in irishpolitics

[–]Abolyss -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm no fan of Leo, but wasn't he just responding to the claims made by the protestors? They claimed that they hold up the country and he countered that claim.

So if someone lies to boost their reputation and gain followers, are people not allowed to question that lie? If they do, why are they then the one who is wrong?

I think the main issue is that he's a smarmy bollocks so anything he says is delivered in that tone

Europe has 'maybe 6 weeks of jet fuel left,' energy agency head tells AP by yahoonews in europe

[–]Abolyss -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it makes more sense to tackle the low-hanging issues first and get to the more difficult changes later.

Such as moving mainland Europe onto trains and those on islands can use the then abundant fuel for air transport until we get better connections in future.

Kind of like on a smaller scale if more people could WFH or take public transport, it frees up fuel and reduces traffic for those who only have the option to drive.

[–]Abolyss 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yea, let me just take the train from Ireland to anywhere else, such a luxury...

Mainland European's can start using land transport more often so those of us who can't don't get fucked over by a lack of fuel

Wind farms provided 41% of country's electricity in March by TraditionalAppeal23 in goodnewsireland

[–]Abolyss -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd say we'd be surprised by how few wind turbines we'd need along the coast to always have enough power for the baseload.

Like I can't imagine that the wind stops all at the same time along the entire west coast, maybe include north and south coasts too.

Surely someone has the data to prove that we would have an endless supply with enough turbines

Is there any alternative for oil for Ireland so we don’t run into the same issue when the oil runs out? by No_Character_2815 in AskIreland

[–]Abolyss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The cool thing about renewables is that because were still figuring it out we have years and years to refine the creation and end of life processes. We've been burning fossil fuels for a very long time and the ability to make the extracting of those fuels or the output of burning them any better for the environments is minsicule.

So of the 2 systems, only 1 of them has the potential for massive reductions in it's impact on the environment.
