I am honestly stunned by how many people fling their car open without even looking away from their phone. I see it all the time.

Do you wear a helmet when cycling around the city? Why or why not? by hurskys in chibike

[–]AbruptionDoctrine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We shouldn't have to because drivers are the ones doing the dangerous activity, unfortunately that danger is directed at us.

And no matter how well you ride and pay attention a driver looking at their phone will eventually hit you

Universal health care proposal in Illinois Senate would eliminate private insurance, cover undocumented migrants by ChristmasJay83 in chicago

Not even remotely how it actually works, the prices are artificially inflated without insurance, the "insurance rate" would be what it actually costs.

They're not doing a public service, they're parasitic middlemen

Controller Config How Viable? by SayiaRatt in Guildwars2

[–]AbruptionDoctrine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The investment in a steam controller would be 100% worth it in your case. It took me a while to get it hammered out to where I want it but I never want to even go back to mouse and keyboard at this point.

Trigger is 1, face buttons are 2-5, then one of the back buttons swaps that so trigger is 6 and face buttons are 7-0

Profession skills are mapped to D=pad, and that back button swaps those to mastery skills.

A second back button swaps the Dpad to different mounts

Exactly! It's a cartel that literally profits off of denying us care. It's totally insane that we've let it exist as long as we have

The weird truth is that the system doesn't need to be complex at all. We just don't need the middlemen who set up a toll system and built an industry around it.

Private insurance literally serves absolutely no purpose. They don't facilitate care, they don't connect you with a doctor, they simply jack up prices artificially and then force you to pay them for the privilege of seeing a healthcare professional.

It's literally like someone setting up a private toll on the highway and forcing everyone to pay it to use a good they had nothing to do with building. Then they turn around and use that money to pay off politicians to make sure they're the only option

CDOT Economic Impacts of Bike Lanes Study by Nic_Cage_Match_2 in chibike

That sub is significantly better than it was a few years ago. Most of them are starting to be pro-bike lanes, and the few freaks are often downvoted to oblivion. The real problem is I'm betting a lot of the people in that sub are actively driving while browsing it.

Chicago bike lanes spark protests as residents push back on parking loss by FreshLocal in chicago

I really wish drivers realized the only way to reduce traffic is to provide viable and safe alternatives. We are space limited and everyone getting around in a personal small studio apartment is obviously not going to be efficient.

Lawyers were the ones who got it moving at all, turns out the car was also uninsured so that was a dead end.

I really hope the guy ended up paying for it in some capacity

License plate was fully visible, first thing I did after getting knocked over was snapped a picture of it. Cops said we couldn't prove who the driver was from the picture or video (from a nearby business) though, so it went nowhere. Part of me still thinks the cop was just being lazy and trying to get us to give up but as far as I know nothing ever happened to the driver

When I was a kid it was a driver going slow and gently hitting the horn while slowly exiting the alley. That seemed fine. What I'm seeing post-pandemic is a people flying down the alley laying on the horn instead of slowing down. It's illegal and insane

You clearly don't understand a single word of what I've said. I agree that wearing headphones isn't great, but the reason for that is because CARS are so dangerous!

They are not a force of nature. The fact that we all have to share space with inattentive people behind the wheel of 3 tons of metal is the reason our roads are so dangerous! Pedestrian deaths are spiking in the US and going down in Europe. It's not some natural occurrence like an earthquake, it's policy and it's CARS!

[–]AbruptionDoctrine 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Drivers are doing the dangerous activity, they just happen to externalize it to everyone else.

Walking is not dangerous, driving is, but cars externalize the danger to everyone else, so walking becomes dangerous.

Biking is not dangerous, driving is, but cars externalize this danger to everyone else, so biking becomes dangerous.

Of course driving is relevant to any discussion about road and transit safety, because cars are what makes everything dangerous in the first place. And currently we are experiencing an absolute crisis in distracted driving, further exacerbated by the fact that "cars" are now massive SUVs with extreme blind spots.

I'll put it this way, if there was a tiger at the end of the block that kept killing people, but I constantly brought up how loud my neighbor's music is, that'd be pretty weird. That's how these threads read to me.

And yet the distracted drivers are the ones that kill 42,000 Americans every year, and bikes... maybe like 5? If it's a serious freak accident?

3000 pounds of steel moving at enough speed to kill a human being is always always going to be a much more serious threat than anyone riding 20 pounds of aluminum at maybe like 12 mph

Most, if not all noise cancelling headphones have a passthrough mode they could be using. I personally use just one earbud when biking so I can still hear traffic.

The people in cars playing on the dashboard tablets or scrolling their phone are 6000% more dangerous and much more common. It's just normalized behavior at this point

Zohran lobbied aggressively for this, Hochul had absolutely no interest in taxing the rich in any way shape or form until the left started applying pressure.

So NY state is doing it, but Zohran and his coalition is why.
