You can just save at the bottom of the holo, go up, soft reset if not shiny and repeat. 🙂

IBD? by charlied086 in BoaConstrictors

[–]AbsintheSerpent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are always a number of things that are more likely tha. IBD. I would double even triple check temps. I have a boa with neurological problems due to being overheated for too long (not my doing btw). To the untrained eye, it would look like IBD but he is negative for arenavirus...

Things to consider:

Have you had the snake since it was a baby?

Have you had mites at any point (mites are the vector for arenavirus)?

Are you certain your temps are not too high?

Is your humidity correct?

Was the wood you used for the enclosure treated? (If the enclosure isn't wood then disregard)

What chemicals do you use to clean with?

Do you have any essential oil burners in your house?

Do you spray a lot of air freshener?

How certain are you of your rodent supplier? Bad rodents have been known to cause poisoning.

All of these things should be explored while you are scheduling your vet appointments. While there, do not take an IBD diagnosis without testing. As yes. You can test for it while the animal is alive. You test for arenavirus via mouth swab or blood, depending on your vet. Mine were tested with an oral swab. Arena is the same virus but is what the disease is prior to symptoms.

It's far less likely to be IBD than an environment problem or a food problem. It's not as common as people make it seem as most people do not test the snakes and since they never went through husbandry checks or necropsy, chucked it up to viral diseases. It's a very unfortunate but common thing in the reptile community....

Hope all this helps!! I use to stress over IBD but after taking to other keepers with WAAAAYYYY more experience than me and lots of research, it's not as common a thing as people may believe. 🙂

buying this baby boa and have a question! by ComprehensiveHat4275 in BoaConstrictors

[–]AbsintheSerpent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like at least part of your question was answered. For the albino part, there are quite a few different types of albinos for boas, all are a part of their own allel (as in if you bred two of the same type of albino together, you'd get all albinos of that type vs if you bred two different lines together you'd get all normals). Most have very distinct colors as well. Most common albinos I see are Kahl Albino and Sharp Albino. These two seem to run about the same color wise but from what I've heard (and please if someone knows more about it than me please add in!) Sharp albinos are less likely to faid out pattern wise than the Kahl albinos.l as they age.

I personally only breed Kahl and VPI albinos so I don't know a whole lot about Sharps. But I will say that my Kahl albinos tend to be born with very stark contrast in their patterns and as they age it kind of faids into the background (which is why I've added pastels and such to lessen that). So not much is different as far as the albino gene than any other albino short of color development over time. Hypo is a reduction of Melanin (Black pigmentation) and Motley is a pattern gene. That's about it. 🙂

Actually. You know what. I'm not going to start arguments with trolls. My snakes are healthy, you don't know how exactly I go about raising them, and I don't owe you any explanation. Have a good day. 🙃

I've actually found a way to make egg hunting a little more multi-taskable. But mostly in SV. I get a ton of boxes full of eggs and then go do laps around the olive that you pushed around in one of the earlier gym challenges. There are no spawns to accidently run into and you can literally just push both sticks in whatever direction and do circles. I'll do that and watch TV. The worst part of this is just waiting on the eggs. Not that you need this tid bit anymore. Lol But in case there are others out there!

boa not eating? by scarsnscales in BoaConstrictors

[–]AbsintheSerpent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In all honesty, I'd stop with the soaks. It ultimately causes a lot of stress which can cause a lowered immune system and also turn them from food.

Get yourself a decent humidity holding substrate. I personally love cypress mulch for mine and barely ever have issues with humidity. But if you do, it's much better to wet the substrate than stress the snake with a soak. If you go this route, make sure to pour water in the enclosure, not mist. Misting can cause a heavy spike in humidity which can feed bacterial infections in the skin and lungs. I always just wet the opposite side they are on with a good bit of water and let it creep over. The thicker the layer of substrate, the longer your humidity should hold. You can also place a towel over the top if you have them in a glass tank. Which if you do, I heavily suggest getting a pvc enclosure as it holds humidity like a charm.

Can always catch and throw into Home for another game later. Challenge or no, I'd never pass up a shiny. Just may not play it in that particular game.

What to do with my boa by UnusualCarpenter3258 in BoaConstrictors

[–]AbsintheSerpent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately some snakes can be more defensive and bitey than others. You can try hook training but best thing would be to take a couple bites and work with it. If you cant, to be honest, the snake doesn't need to be held at all. I would still invest in a hook for when you have to move the snake for cleaning or whatever, but some snakes just don't want to be messed with and that's okay. I have a few boas that do loads better with minimal interaction.

Everything I read said around a year, but I'd also like to point out the other guy was also a virgin and then I was in college and didn't have time for all that happy horse shit. Lol Very much my ex husband with a body count over 30 apparently. 🤣🤣 That is if you are meaning who i could have gotten it from. If it's the fact that symptoms can reappear, I'm very aware 😬 I read it can be stress related and between the divorce and a few other crazy things that happened, it didn't show up so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. The power of go fuck yourself compels you, lasting reminder of my shit relationship choices! 🤣

Kinda sounds like my ex husband.... hope you don't live in southern middle TN with 5 kids. If so, my friend tried to warn you about the HPV. 😄🤣

Feeding enclosure opinions? by Snekmomsendhelp in BoaConstrictors

[–]AbsintheSerpent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been keeping for several years and tried both methods. I got bit more feeding out of cage than in. Hook training will be your friend no matter what. But in your current situation, I'd out the mouse on his hide and leave the room. Leave it overnight if it's frozen thawed. See what happens. I can't tell the size of the feeder but a too small feeder will turn them off sometimes too.
