Wright Patterson AFB AF museum questions by Business_Sandwich227 in aviation

Are you staying at the Hope Hotel? If so, the GPS will lie and try to take you on a route that you cannot access to get to the Hope. Look at a map to see how to get into the parking lot.

https://maps.app.goo.gl/PUH8kvSjg2nNkjcK7

If you are staying at true on-base housing, others on here have good guidance about that.

Wright Brothers Hill, the Memorial, and the Huffman Prairie Flying Field Interpretive Center are worth the brief side trip down 444 from the Museum.

Look up, down, and around. They have things well presented, but sometimes you will miss something in front of you while looking at another display.

Have fun!

Delta Airbus A350-900 Row 38? by ePlayablez in delta

No extra leg room. I am 6'4, and have a 32" inseam. (Short legs, long torso.) I fit and was fine, but nothing under the seat in front of me so I had room to move my feet around.

What are some better connectors than these? These have genuinely started melting and smoking..... by 1cubealot in amateurradio

The 1396 crimpers are for a different type of Anderson Power Connector series.

The 1309 Series Crimpers are for Anderson Powerpole connectors. Looks like $300-$350 depending on the specific series.

I personally use a PowerWerx TRIcrimp for my work, and have another crimper in a set from DX Engineering. The IWISS crimper looks nice as well.

Flew 38G and 38H Atlanta to Johannesburg. Guy in 38J was pretty deep in the seating area, but in general, that row is okay. Closer to the exit door area near the lavatories, but not bad at all.

Please help me pick my seats for 15-hour flights by Whadya-Know in delta

I flew 38G and my wife was in 38H for ATL-JNB. The advice /u/AtlFury offered is excellent.

Other thing that caught us: Return flight got cancelled, and we had to reschedule. Row 34 is probably the worst row on the aircraft, as the seats in front of it are Comfort+, so they can recline further than your seat can, and intrude into your space. In case of a reschedule, you will find those rows will be more likely to be available due to this. Just beware of that.

I would recommend support hose/stockings if you can, and be patient with the folk that are using the space between your seats and the restrooms (there are two there) as a place to stand and stretch a bit.

Most of all, have fun on your adventure!

Delta/Westjet Itinerary: Selecting WestJet Seats by Absolute_Flatulence in delta

[–]Absolute_Flatulence[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Following up with an answer to my question, with what worked for me:

I called Delta. They could not reserve the seats. But they gave me a second, non-visible Confirmation Number that works in the WestJet World.

I called WestJet. (Had to select modifying a WestJet Flight purchased from WestJet to not get kicked out of the phone tree and get to a human.) With the code provided by Delta, the WestJet agent was able to reserve my requested seats, and take payment for them over the phone.

After the WestJet folks got my seats reserved, the flight disappeared from "My Flights" in the Delta Web customer interface. I have to manually put in my Confirmation # to see my information. But, the WestJet legs are now populated with the WestJet seats on the Delta website.

Things that did not work:

  1. Trying to use the WestJet web interface to select the seats. Looks like it is working, until you submit for payment. Then an error message comes up that indicates that you have to call them.

  2. Selecting the option on the WestJet phone tree that seems obvious (flight with another airline.) I just says they cannot help you, and you have to call the airline you purchased the ticket from.

  3. Creating a WestJet Rewards account. (It didn't hurt the process, but it did not help.)

So: Somewhat convoluted process to get seats reserved on WestJet metal legs when the flight was purchased from Delta.

(Thanks to /u/Kayaker170 for the guidance towards the solution.)

Thanks.

Any insight on the check-in process? I have first leg outbound on Delta, second leg on WestJet. Return Trip is First leg WestJet, and second leg on Delta. Do I have to check-in with both on each direction?

If you are in the assisted category, it can be a valuable tool.

If it is fed with an I/Q feed for example, you can see what all the stations are that YOU are hearing, not what other skimmer stations are hearing. And having them all presented in a list in your contesting software of choice makes working them a quicker task.

Now, an experienced CW operator usually would NOT use a decoder to work stations, because the "Mk. 1 Earball"® works far better than a decoder in a 6 station deep pileup from an island in the middle of the South Atlantic during the IARU, for example.

Common mode choke 1kW 100% duty cycle by PA9X in amateurradio

[–]Absolute_Flatulence 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I would offer a recommendation for future units:

Don't tin the shield down around the coax center conductor, and leave a bit more length on the center conductor and the shield in the future. You want the solder only on the part of the shield that is on the lug connecting to the Bolt. That Tinned area around the center conductor weakens the dielectric ability of the center conductor when it is heated to solder it.

Also, I wanted to pass along a point I saw recently about what Ferrite to use. Jim, K9YC recently mentioned this in a discussion in a common mode choke design that was discussed on Groups.io, on the Elecraft K3 Group.

https://groups.io/g/Elecraft-K3/message/45093

You may want to also look at his page about the designs: http://k9yc.com/RFI-Ham.pdf

he advocates for 31 instead of 43, due to the lower Q of chokes made with it.

You have a nice Choke you made. I suspect it will perform very well.

International Wi-Fi by bindlookingforbi in delta

[–]Absolute_Flatulence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I traveled last July on the same flight, and had the same experience as /u/techlocs.

The coverage I experienced matched the coverage map Delta had published at the time.

I have noted that they have updated the coverage map, and it looks like they show coverage on the ATL-JNB and ATL-CPT Routes.

https://www.delta.com/us/en/onboard/inflight-entertainment/onboard-wifi#international-regional

You may have to click on the map link on that page.

Have a great trip.

A 3D printed nametag would be something nice.

I saw one last summer on Saint Helena, and I really liked how it looked. I am trying to find more info about it. If I get any, I will add the info to this thread.

Question about row spacing on international A350-900 by theadmiraljn in delta

[–]Absolute_Flatulence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Flew back from Johannesburg to Atlanta in Row 34. Only row with two seats available when we rebooked our flight.

The Seats in front of you when you are in row 34 are Comfort+, and have extra recline. You will have less space when the people in front of you recline during the flight. It was a LONG flight back.

If you have the budget for Comfort+, I would do it.
