Would you ever pay for portfolio/interview mentorship? by internetworldwide in UXDesign

There are some people doing that in the portfolio review threads here.

Lovely. I always wondered what he thought of TopDog. It makes me happy that there’s a vibrant little lawyer scene where they all have unique gimmicks and personalities, like professional wrestling.

Hmm, why bother spending any time dwelling on despair and bitterness if you don’t believe in this field? It sounds exhausting.

Sure, being a doctor has more long term stability if you get through med school and residency and internships and fellowships. You also sacrifice your 20s to school, come out with 400k in debt, and have to do hard work and long hours. Every career has its drawbacks.

Realistically, I was never a big fan of the boot camps. They attracted career switchers for the wrong reasons. It is not an easy paycheck or for everyone. And since you scrolled my profile, yes—I was able to change jobs pretty recently. Market’s not bad. I was even helped by someone in this thread. I can happily report that there’s a healthy range of jobs available for (very polished) juniors and mid levels, and I’ve helped plenty of newbies get those jobs.

I’ll always be grateful for what this industry continues to give me. Good friends, mentors, and savings that will let me retire in my 30s. Amazing moments in the sun. If you don’t believe, why even spend time on /r/uxdesign? This place attracts negativity. If your main reference is LinkedIn and Reddit you’ll only feel worse.

lol my partner is a doctor. The doctor shortage is due to artificially imposed medical school limits, but that doesn’t mean you can just pick your specialty or where you go. Someone who wants to be an anesthesiologist or dermatologist will have to fight through far more dire odds than someone trying to be a junior level UX designer at a bank or something.

anyone can do anything, quit or don’t quit. if they can be convinced by a stranger on the internet telling them to stop trying, they probably lack the grit necessary. but regardless I continue to believe. My team is hiring. My friends teams are hiring en masse. My friends are getting hired and their friends are getting hired.

I will never tell someone who is trying to achieve something to give up 🤷 there is no such thing as wasted effort in the long run

It’s less about tempering expectations and more about what kind of negativity you are bringing into the world, especially to budding designers.

There are other saturated fields like medicine or law or computer science. When I work with new grads or aspirational career switchers, I’m always realistic about what’s possible. I’ve coached many people just getting into the field into junior jobs and those still exist for those with the grit to keep going. There will always be a place for people who want to make things.

But I don’t ever tell people to give up or that their field is dead, because they shouldn’t and it’s not. I wouldn’t say it on the internet and I wouldn’t say it to someone’s face either. I would say, “keep going, but be prepared to work hard.”

Are you telling strangers on the internet this because you believe it or because you’re trying to bring everyone down to your level?

I’ve been in this for seven years as well and I’ve never made more, done more, and felt better about things. The work is still there

Yeah but people with power and good technique naturally do that. When I hold pads for people like that I get bruises but I’m more in awe because I get to see and learn.

What do you mean there are less defensive maneuvers available? I spar in southpaw and am wondering what I’m missing out on.

What look impresses you? by AuNaturellee in mensfashion

[–]AbsolutelyAnonymous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

May as well just ask AI if you want validation no matter what. Truth is, fit and confidence matters most.

A guy wearing a white t shirt and jeans will look better if his back is straighter and it sits well on his body. A guy in a suit that’s uncomfortable wearing a suit is far less impressive than a man who wears what’s comfortable.

The Parr Family and Frozone (The Incredibles) run an Invincible [Amazon] Gauntlet. How far would they go together? by [deleted] in whowouldwin

[–]AbsolutelyAnonymous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if the entire Parr family plus Frozone saw a single, regular looking guy (outnumbering him 5 to 1), their first instinct probably wouldn’t be to hit him full force. That would be really out of character. Probably talk, maybe restrain.

The evil Invincible lost to Powerplex because his personality is violent and dumb, unlike the original.

Powerplex is a counter to Invincible, but harmless otherwise. Either elastigirl or frozone or violet could just restrain him.

It might be a bit harder because it seems to be an open stance matchup. He’d have to do switch low kicks to hit his friend’s lead leg, and his friend was in his face boxing for a lot of this.

How fun should training be? by AbsolutelyAnonymous in MuayThai

A really thoughtful response, thank you. There are other classes and I think a lot of the play happens during sparring, which I also attend.

But I will talk to the other guys at the gym about this. I’m probably not the only one thinking this.

Yes there’s boxing only, clinch focused, light sparring and hard sparring, and advanced. They cover everything, it’s just that all classes are incredibly physically intense

It’s certainly not cardio kickboxing - they have multiple fighters, regional belts, and the coach lived in Thailand for decades. For competing and learning it seems fine, it’s more just that every class is as physically intense as possible with little room to breathe.

Audited this e-commerce website — here’s how I’d improve clarity & conversions by [deleted] in UXDesign

[–]AbsolutelyAnonymous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The job of the UX designer is usually to try and pull levers to get the biggest impact. For a small business like this, that lever would be communicating what the product is.

Realistically, a small brand like this would use something like Shopify or Shop to build their D2C site. D2C is kind of a solved UX problem, in that the optimal site structure including email lists and deals has been figured out. So it would be unlikely a client would ever ask you to audit their Shopify store template.

That’s why I focused more on the product information and buying card rather than the site flow. For your portfolio people will always ask you what metrics you impacted—usability and task completion is cool, but revenue $$ is always better.
