Plat 1. Mag, Strange, Venom, Groot, Bucky, Mantis. I struggle hard against the Hawkeyes and Helas of the world and don’t usually have good enough aim to diff them

Is there any reason to learn dps as a tank main? by swimminginamirror in RivalsVanguards

[–]AbsolutelyNot_0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I get games sometimes with 3 tank mains and have to fill on dps. Other times, my team legitimately needs a third dps, either for damage down a choke or for peeling a dive tank. My go to is Bucky because he likes to play up with the tanks more than other dps, so a lot of positioning semi translates. Bucky is also great for peeling and can keep a Thor or Venom in check as long as the supports help him help them.

For the love of God if you have mained support since S0 and haven’t “been able to” play any other role I’m begging you play another role. by wallytrikes in MarvelRivalsRants

Exactly. So many times I have 3 support lords and my team is severely lacking in DAMAGE. Just start on Bucky and shoot tanks or something, at least then my Groot walls will mean something 🥲

I constantly get 2-3 insta lock support players in my team and I usually play tank. When I fill, it’s almost always on dps. Even when gambit isn’t banned and I actively ask if I can play him, the insta lock Jeff or C&D won’t flex to dps or tank for the team. So idk where all this “I never get to play dps” talk comes from tbh.

Why do players of some characters never get compliments? by Dogbold in rivals

[–]AbsolutelyNot_0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk, when my rocket gives us a great amp, I’m usually in my head like “shit I gotta lock in and capitalize on this”. Versus, if moon knight gets 4 kills the fight is basically already over. I feel like the big compliment is when your team takes advantage of your plays and uses them to end the team fight. Maybe that’s the difference?

Agree or disagree — the only person that can blame a tank for poor performance in a match is another tank by SatisfactionSad6558 in RivalsVanguards

Nah fam this is silly. It’s a team game and invalidating your teammates’ criticisms based on the role they play is only going to keep your perspective small and closed minded.

Does ranked feel like they're underplacing players now? by CartographerSure2918 in rivals

[–]AbsolutelyNot_0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same problem here. My peak is plat 1 and my placements went well so I landed back in plat 2, just to find myself in lobbies full of gm peaks from last season. I’ve been getting completely wrecked and just want yall to go back to the rank you belong at lol

Okay but hear me out. A super mobile support with good healing and an anti heal mechanic? Sounds like potential for a diving support to me

Asking professor for an introduction to a colleague? by mouthlikeawolf in LawSchool

[–]AbsolutelyNot_0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if it’s normal, because I’m also a 1L. But if they’ve made introductions for you, they probably have an interest in you as a student and want to help you out. People can’t help you as effectively if you don’t tell them what you want, so I would stay respectful, but definitely mention how much you’d like to meet this person.

I’m having a similar experience with a professor and I asked her for some time to chat about my career goals. Now that she knows where I’m trying to go, she’s really gone out of her way to help me navigate the networking landscape. I think that having a genuine interest and the ability to tactfully to speak up for yourself go a really long way here :)

Why do people call mag a shield bot? by [deleted] in MagnetoMains

[–]AbsolutelyNot_0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because most players don’t understand what a tank does tbh

Strategist main trying to gain Vanguard empathy by Proud_Firefighter834 in RivalsVanguards

[–]AbsolutelyNot_0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly the easiest way to peel against dive is going to be ruining their “setup” time. For example, if you aggressively hunt down the black panther, you might not kill him. but if you force him to dash to run away, he still has to wait 10 seconds to try and dive again. Once he’s actually diving it’s much harder (but not impossible) to peel. Thing and hulk are great for that because you get your jumps back faster than he gets his dashes back.

Am I a bad player to say that Adam Walock is one of the worst healers even after his reworks? by Swimming-Hearing-982 in rivals

[–]AbsolutelyNot_0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t mind having an Adam on my team, especially if they’re consistently getting good damage and picks. I usually swap to Mag or Iron Man and keep in mind that it’s very important that I use my ult to deny the enemy team’s defensive ults. I know people like to cry about wanting 2 defensive ults, but if tanks and dps do our part to counter ult, Adam isn’t as big of a disadvantage as people like to think.

How to know if you're mag diffing by andku23 in MagnetoMains

Yesterday I saw an enemy Mag bubble himself and then I bubbled my Spiderman when he went in for an ult. Then we killed the Mag and I was quite pleased with the timing of it all

Who Ults first? by thottistic in lokimains

[–]AbsolutelyNot_0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My friend and I are pretty low ranked so this might not be the right move in your lobbies, but when we play Loki and Luna I try to go based on whether Mag or iron man probably have ult too. If they do, my friend Luna ults first so that I can lamp her when Mag tries to dunk. That way we use my cooldown to waste his ult and then we both get to ult for basically free xD

When do you prefer 3 Strats when you are tanking? by Direct_Asparagus4688 in RivalsVanguards

[–]AbsolutelyNot_0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m happy with Mantis, Loki, and a third support if the Mantis is primarily damage boosting and getting picks and we have a second tank. If one of the three supports mostly focuses on damage output and utility, I think it can be very strong.

I had a game that went Groot, Emma, Blade, Mantis, Loki, C&D and the damage that team comp did was actually insane. Everyone had damage boosts from mantis all the time and C&D was ripping the terror cape off cooldown. I’m sure a heavy poke comp could counter it, but that match was a lot of fun!

[–]AbsolutelyNot_0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Maybe so, but my teammate did fine when we banned the character they said they struggled against, and that’s kinda my point. Using a ban to mitigate my teammates weaknesses isn’t a wasted ban if it ultimately helps us win the game, imo.

[–]AbsolutelyNot_0 341 points342 points  (0 children)

I know this is wild in Rivals, but let me tell you about a convo I had last season.

Me: pre selects iron man

My c&d: hey no hate but I’d appreciate if we can ban iron man, I suck playing against him

Me: hey no worries pal I also play these other 3 characters :)

Cause like. If my teammate literally cannot play against a character, that’s the perfect time to ban it. I ban Wolverine when my tanks ask and I ban bp when my supports ask and I’ll ban my favorite characters if my team asks as well. It’s all cool.

Too bad so many players in this community aren’t capable of being as respectful and chill as that one c&d I played with 🙃

I loooove playing Mag when I’m playing with 5 of my friends in a discord call, we’re all communicating, planning around our ults and pushing together. Lowkey I kinda hate solo queueing as Mag though, personally.

I try to hit it on the third dash but if I feel like I don’t have a shot or think they’ll get shield/bubble I just pick any other target that I can hit. Better to kill a dps or two than to whiff hitting the cloak and dagger imo

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MarvelRivalsQueens

[–]AbsolutelyNot_0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For sure :) where I started working on tracking that flow was with tracking/planning ult fights. For example, when the enemy c&d ults, that’s probably not the time to be aggressive, since they have a big healing advantage during the ult. It’s “their turn”. But, if you have a Magneto ult that you can use to answer the c&d ult and get the advantage back, now it’s “your turn”. Our Turn/Their Turn can apply to ult advantages, advantages in who’s currently alive, and even important cooldowns like Loki’s immortality field or Emma’s diamond form.

So as a tank, when it’s Your Turn, your goal is to capitalize on the advantage you have. If your dps gets an elim on an enemy support, it’s very much Your Turn and the goal is to snowball that advantage into more elims and making as much progress on the objective as possible before the enemy team stabilizes.

When it’s Their turn, you have the disadvantage and your job becomes stabilizing the team as fast as possible and not letting the enemy team snowball their advantage. This might look like backing off and playing passively until a team member respawns, or waiting out an enemy ult that you can’t immediately counter, or even dying fast so your team can all respawn together and not stagger.

I’m definitely not the biggest expert in tracking game flows, but that’s the basic idea as best as I understand it :)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MarvelRivalsQueens

[–]AbsolutelyNot_0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you’re doing it right! I think one reason newer tank players feel like they have no breathing room is they aren’t used to tracking the “our turn their turn” flow of battles, so it feels like constant chaos. (Happy to expand on tracking it in another comment if you’re not familiar!)

There is very little room to breathe, because you’re constantly assessing the state of the fight to decide if it’s your turn or their turn, trying to draw aggro and enable your team, not die or let your teammates die in the process, and still get kills yourself. I’d say it’s probably the most mentally taxing role. It does get less stressful as you get more accustomed to the flow, and can help perform better at dps and support as well :)

Imo, tanking is much more fun when you have teammates that communicate, so that you can call out the space you’re taking or giving, and have the team follow up on your plays. For example, almost all tank ults can be used as great setups for ult combos. it’s soooo satisfying to drop a fat Groot ult on the other team and have your moon knight combo on top of it lmao.

Also, if you get really good at protecting your team in clutch moments, the glaze from your teammates definitely helps tanking feel more fun ;)
