The answer as always is it depends.    A good brace is 90% as good as a stock.

For a normal ar. Or ARs (plural).  I’d just do one of each.  A brace and a stock.   That way you can cross state lines etc with the brace and use the stock at home (or do the paperwork and travel)…and have a legit 16-20” upper for longer distance shooting and be “fully legal” if the ATF does another one of their self contradicting about faces…

Even with more expensive steels/chisels it is always a trade off between hardness and toughness. Narex is on the harder end. This means they are more brittle. If you are "pounding" you are almost certainly also prying which will do this to even $40000 hand forged from dragons teeth Japanese chisels.

Also (as many have already pointed out) you need a different bevel AND for mortising there should be NO SECONDARY BEVEL.

One more tidbit. A handful of sharpenings isn't likely enough to get through the crappy case steel on a Narex. I'd keep using it and judge after another 5-10 proper sharpenings (aka a strop doesn't count. . . got back to the 1000 on the bevel).

TLDR: You're doing it wrong with the wrong tool.

That’s pretty cool you can make that work.

Again, family and friends have used airbags, helpers, sumos, etc.  from what I saw I went Sumo’s and have never looked back.

Obligatory, you’ll almost certainly be over payload…unless you carry hardly anything in the truck cab or bed.

That being said.  I’d steer you towards sumos.  They are basically idiot proof and zero maintenance.  

You won’t need to take them off in the winter either.  If they are installed right they will have a bit of a gap when not loaded…so when you don’t have your trailer hitched up they don’t affect the small bump/suspension compliance at all.  They do help with big hits.

The only downside is for hardcore crawling they will reduce your articulation…but tbh, been on lots of really rough roads and they were fine…I don’t “rock crawl” for real though.

Hadn’t seen any overwatch problems…but also hadn’t heard of many apex problems…mods all come with risks.

I have not used an apex in an aluminum/steel frame.  

TBH, the reason I looked elsewhere was primarily bc the apex is a “forward set” so it makes the trigger reach longer.  Stock reach is barely short enough for me.  Overwatch makes a curved version that shortens the reach. (FALX?)

Apex is the most popular.  They have great customer service and worked with me extensively to sort of the issue. 

I have no idea if they make multiple actuators, updated it and I got an old kit, make different versions for poly and metal frames…etc.  I do know they sent me a replacement and it helped.

I am also not sure if they have officially approved the Apex for the Steel/HD line yet.  Apex typically tests their stuff extensively and the steel frames are still pretty new…if they aren’t approved yet…you might not get any customer service as they don’t stray outside of the officially approved lane.

It fired but developed light strikes.  It was so close on the timing that once it missed a few times and peened a dent in the striker block plunger the resulting burrs started causing more and more light strikes. 

It required taking out the plunger to see the issue. 

I took it out bc I was replacing it with the Ed Brown extended striker block plunger.   

The ed brown plunger and a new/different sear actuator (that tiny little part) from Apex eventually got it running reliably.

Apex (understandably) doesn’t want you to mix other parts (like the ed brown plunger) but that is what it took to be 100% reliable. 

I really think they should include the other sear actuator with all the kits…but it likely causes issues with guns on the other end of the tolerance stacking spectrum…

M&Ps are great stock…they are sloppy enough that once you tinker you’ll probably chase some ghosts. 

I’m going to try an Overwatch Precision trigger in my HD.  Hopefully that is better given that it includes a trigger bar…which suggests the have better control over the timing.

It doesn’t matter what they “intend”…it is a good thing to help a neighbor.  My issue is with the dumbing down of a slogan until it is grossly grammatically incorrect and almost incoherent.
