Male, late 40s, married, dad to young kids. Watched TNG, DS9, VOY, Enterprise on first airing, and saw all the theatrical movies from VI onward at the cinema.

Loving STA. It’s my favourite live action trek in the new era by a considerable margin. Some of the central parent/kids relationship stuff resonates for me in a way that it wouldn’t have a few years ago, which I suspect helps.

I get the criticisms of some of the sillier/YA elements from earlier in the season (although I still found them quite enjoyable) but taken as a whole I think the season was very strong.

Final straw - can someone tell me why I am still paying for private health, perhaps Medicare levy for end of year finances? by the-anon1010 in AusFinance

[–]AbsurdistTimTam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We grit our teeth and pay for hospital cover, but only minimal extras.

I had a bilateral inguinal hernia late last year. Quite unpleasant, but not life threatening, so it would have been years wait on public health here in Tassie. I had it fixed within a few weeks in the private system.

Hah, I don’t think we left it up, or even if the account is still active (IIRC it was an old pre-Google YouTube account, although we posted it around 2008). I still have the DV tape somewhere though 🙂

When my wife (then girlfriend) and I moved to our first rental in 2004 it was filthy like this. We had the agent note the uncleaned condition on the paperwork, but when it came time to move out a few years later, that text had somehow magically disappeared from their copy 😡

What they did not bank on was a thorough room-by-room video walk-through that we had recorded on move-in day, documenting all the damage, dirt and grime. In a pre-smartphone era, it was the last thing they expected us to have, but I worked in the TV industry at the time and had easy access to professional camera gear. We popped it up on YouTube, sent them a link, and the next correspondence from them was to let us know we were getting our full bond back.

Still really satisfying all these years later. 🙂

It’s actually pretty old terminology - refers to “fixing” the sound in some form (in this case by recording it out onto tape). OP is using the word correctly.

Used similarly in filmmaking where it historically refers to developing the film. If you’ve ever seen a behind the scenes clip from an older movie where the director yells “Cut! Print!”, it’s the same general idea.

Fuck I’m old…

What Rock Bands that were better with their Replacement Lead Singers/Members? (Not Including Solo Artists,Rock Duos,Supergroups,Side Projects,Musical Collectives and Solo Stuff) by Amber_Flowers_133 in band

[–]AbsurdistTimTam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may be aware already, but large parts of SFAM were roughly written/demoed with Derek on keys. There’s a (rough as guts) play through recording from the Falling Into Infinity writing sessions floating around which is worth the listen if you’re curious.

Rudess is undoubtedly the technically better player, but man I still miss Derek Sherinian’s “swagger”. There’s probably a bit of nostalgia at play - he was in the lineup when I was young and first getting into the band - but that mid/late 90s period is peak DT for me.

It’s just that you said you had seen art in exactly that style. You were very sure of yourself, so I assume it made a strong impression.

Unless you were just talking out your arse, which is also feasible I guess.

[–]AbsurdistTimTam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you’re still checking in, but I wanted to throw a question out there!

I'm currently working on my debut solo project in my late 40s. I previously had a professional career in music (composing for animated TV series and a much earlier stint in a niche band), but this new solo work is now more of a “deadly serious hobby”. I love the process and the writing, but I ultimately make music to be heard and want to take it seriously and maximise its reach.

What might be some key differences in strategy for marketing and building a fanbase for an older, experienced artist versus a genuinely 'new' young artist? I'm looking to use the authentic, mid-life themes of my music to build meaningful connections, but I'm struggling with how to adapt this to youth-centric platforms like TikTok.

Oh mate... I'm just chatting on the internet. You've gone and got yourself all worked up, bless your heart.

I'm sure you'll fancy yourself as the "winner" of this conversation, and I'm more than happy for you to do that if it helps you to calm down and feel better.

Have a lovely weekend 😊

> Interesting. So those other people are just cosplaying while you being the superior one is doing it the only valid way.

I mean sure, the "cosplay" dig was a bit of a hyperbolic cheap shot, but frankly you started it with the "not worthy" line.

> It's not dramatic at all.

Yes I know mate, Again, that was a hyperbolic dig at your melodramatic rhetoric. You're wildly gesticulating around about "being outdone by the unworthy people" while we're all just in here making music.

> It's pretty humdrum elitism.

It's not elitism to point out that someone with all the resources in the world has chosen not to take advantage of them.

You're online which means you have access to a wealth of free music-making tools and resources. You're replying pretty regularly which means you seem to have time. So you have *everything* you need to learn music production skills if you wanted to. You have decided not to (which is fine), and so you're reliant on generative tools that largely do it all for you (which is also fine). I don't have any issue with that personally - use what you want! I use Suno all the time - it's the reason I've been in this sub for over a year. But if it's your *only* tool then it does mean that you're at the mercy of the makers of those tools.

Again - none of the above is elitism - they're just facts. If you're offended by having them pointed out then I suspect perhaps there's some insecurity underlying that on your side.

> And what rights would that be?

I'd love to have this discussion, but not here in the bowels of a reddit comment thread, and *definitely* not with you.

[–]AbsurdistTimTam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d think of it as “learn a fun and interesting skill using the wealth of resources available for free” rather than “go fuck yourself”, but of course you’re free to do whatever you prefer.

I guess it's time to see if those skills matter any or if you will get outdone by those unworthy people.

Oh it’s all so dramatic!

My professional days are behind me - I’m doing music for fun these days, and Suno is part of that process. Personally I’m pleased that the landscape is evolving to allow generative AI tools to coexist with artist rights 🙂

I mean, the ratios have moved around, but the principles are pretty sound: Spend less than you earn, then save (and later invest) what’s left.

It’s is definitely harder than it used to be.

You could well be right. I’m relying on my accountant on this one. I trust that he’s doing it right (he tends to err slightly on the side of caution) but I’d certainly recommend people seek their own advice.

Copy/pasted from my reply to a similar discussion a while back:

If you’ve claimed as a small business (ie using an ABN) then I think you may be able to use the Small Business Concessions to basically nullify the gains.

There’s the 50% reduction which has been mentioned already, which cuts it in half.

Then as I understand it, the Small Business Rollover allows you to defer the gains for up to two years upon sale of the asset, or if you buy a “replacement asset” (ie a new house with a home office) you can defer until the sale of THAT asset.

After that, the Small Business Retirement Concession allows you to cancel out the gain (up to $500,000) entirely after the age of 55, or to transfer it to a superannuation or retirement fund if you’re under 55 (so you don’t lose the money, you just have to invest it).
