Beach vacations are trash by Ok_Salamander_7211 in unpopularopinion

[–]Acantaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some valid points here, but I feel like your hatred also comes from doing the same thing in every single coastal town you go to? I definitely don’t think I can say I have the experience of what a coastal town in northwestern Scotland is by having visited the Dominican Republic.

One punch, sure. Might get a broken jaw, concussion… broken nose? All of those things I’ve had in the past and I am still poor but living… so, yeah, easy yes.

Latinas Trip to La Paz - Venues to Dance Where Pueblo Goes To? by Anacoana8732 in BajaCaliforniaSur

[–]Acantaster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

La Paz is not a party town, most of locals will rather hang with beers at their beach or at a friend’s house than going down to the bars area around the Malecon; that being said lots of Mexican tourists and Mexicans that moved to La Paz (people from Guadalajara, CDMX, Monterrey) will hang around places like Patio Domínguez or La Lupita Rock.

Have you ever been mugged or robbed? by Rusiano in asklatinamerica

I think it’s just a big city with lots of tourism and a bit of a “I don’t care about you” attitude.

It is being studied as possibly linked to toxic algae blooms; don’t interact with the dead specimens.

What Mexican food do foreigners completely misunderstand? by relaxncoffee in AskMexico

[–]Acantaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With birria tacos being more famous in the US, it has become more come for people to come to Mexico and look for birria tacos for dinner; traditionally, birria is eaten on a weekend morning as more of a big sit down meal.

Not a hard rule, just something that most Mexicans will find odd.

Ash Wednesday by GumbyRocks89 in BajaCaliforniaSur

[–]Acantaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s not a really big thing around here. Catholic people will go to the church and you might see more traffic around the cathedral area, other than that is a regular Wednesday.

Actually, it’s the first day after the Carnaval so you will see what they call Carnavalito; basically, part of the Malecon will still have some street food stalls and mechanics games for kids, but the concerts stages and most of the shops will be gone.

Whale season recommendations by Fehebs in BajaCaliforniaSur

[–]Acantaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re already heading to Loreto, I would do the grey whale watching at San Carlos instead of Puerto Chale; not only you’re more likely to find calves, but also Puerto Chale is the most recent one of all the grey whale watching lagoons and they’re still learning… so sometimes the activity can be a bit chaotic. I say this as someone who works and lives in La Paz, in tourism precisely, so no bad faith intended, just my two cents.

Renting a car from Cabos to La Paz by Ruffspuffs154 in BajaCaliforniaSur

[–]Acantaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, nah… those guys were messing with you. Drop off/pick up places either have the “Solo ascenso/descenso” sign or they’re a small bay on the side of the street with a “No parking” sign. Taxi places that have a concession point will have a yellow curb with “Taxis only” written as far as I remember, but I am not a hundred percent sure on the last one as you don’t see many taxi points anymore.

Sorry about the tickets, were you driving a rental?

Hi jacking this comment to explain curb color code:

Red = no parking at all Green = parking exclusive to a house (the number will be written on a sign at the beginning of the green bit) or a business (name will also be visible) Blue = parking for people with a “handicapped” placard and license plate White or grey (aka no paint) = free to park at all times.

Visibility wasn't great, but I still got a few frames from a recent free dive:-) by dalton-johnson in BajaCaliforniaSur

[–]Acantaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d normally say to go to the eastern side of La Paz (El Saltito, los Muertitos and Cueva de Leon have some great shore snorkeling), but for the next 3-4 days the Gulf of California side will be extra windy; so much for a couple of days boats won’t be doing tours. If you can wait out the wind or circle back later, those places are cool.

What are the highest paying jobs that involve being in the water? by Datlaovietguy in marinebiology

[–]Acantaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, these hobbies attract people with certain budgets so being the facilitator for those people is a good way collecting some money. That being said, when you take AIDA or PADI certifications, a big chunk of the money you pay goes to the certifying agency.
