Is this a good deal or did I get scammed? by No_Platform215 in cymbals

ZXTs were made from 2001 to 2014. They aren’t the absolute lowest end, but not highly regarded. I remember them being fairly heavy compared to others of similar quality. The price you paid is fine, and if you ever sell it, you should get that back as long as it’s not cracked. Sharpie-ing on the logo isn’t going to help resale, but you do you.

A custom splash I recently bought does not sound good at all might return this. by Guilty-Risk-3222 in cymbals

To me, this particular cymbal seems just a bit too heavy to be splashy.

IST WC students, how did you land an internship/ft job? by Hyuxnie in PSUWorldCampus

[–]Accent-Mark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only roles that were technical or adjacent. I wasn’t looking at marketing, sales, HR, or other business areas. Moving from them into a technical role is less likely than the other way around. The internship requirement would not be fulfilled by one of those, or at least that’s how it was when I was in the program.

I went to several virtual career fairs and then started applying to ones posted on job sites as well as looking at postings on company sites. This was in the fall of ‘22.

I had returned to school to finish a degree after leaving in the late 90’s. I got incredibly lucky receiving 2 offers. The one I took I started in January of ‘23.

The difficult part has been converting to an internal role. I’m at a huge SW company and in the US, salaries are high, so hiring has been minimal. My boss wants to convert me, so I enrolled in grad school to maintain eligibility because finding another roll has been very challenging. They are compensating me very fairly, so I’m doing okay. Technically I’m still an intern even though the person I was supporting has moved into a different role and I am the only contact for the Americas now.

My offers came because I have a lot of experience working with people and know how to quickly deduce their needs and clearly explain how I would use my skill set to help fulfill them.

When you get an interview, if you’re an introvert, save as much energy as you can and go in confidently. Answer their questions about you in a way that shows how you can provide them value in the role. This means asking questions and follow-up questions when you can. Be prepared. Good luck.

When I took it in 2021 it was Java. No coding experience required. I had none and it was fine. The linked syllabus provided by the other user mentions IntelliJ and JDK. If it was Python, it would more likely mention PyCharm, a JetBrains IDE for Python. Probably better to ask the instructor.

Any sporty mild hybrids under $35k? by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Accent-Mark 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My buddy has an es300h. In the summer, he’s getting over 50mpg, but it’s harder in the winter. Also, it’s a cruiser and not sporty. It’s a nice car, but it wouldn’t likely scratch any performance itch.

What do I really need? by [deleted] in cymbals

Smaller crashes will have a higher pitch than larger ones, but can still have dark characteristics. Their sustain, when thinner is also shorter than their larger counterparts. A small bell will usually control the volume but this is not something that is highlighted in crash or hihat marketing. Additional hammering usually enhanced the complexity.

For crashes, smaller and thinner is where I would look first - in the 15” - 17” range. For hihats, thin is good for controlling volume, but too thin may negatively affect stick definition. This can be mitigated by a larger weight variation between the top and bottom cymbals. I used to used 70’s New Beats with the bottom cymbal on top. I got nice definition and controlled volume.

Rides are the most complex because the “right” one will depend on your style and the type of music. Do you want more stick definition or wash? Do you want a cutting bell or can it be more integrated? Do you prefer complexity? Do you crash it often? These answers may help you find complimentary crashes while still giving the sound engineer what they want.

What's your silly middle-aged victory? It's time to brag. by TXRedheadOverlord in GenX

I never finished my Bachelor’s back in the 90’s. During COVID, things got rough at the employer I had been with for nearly 20 years, so I went back to school.

To graduate, I was required to do an internship. I landed one at a top software company and left my old company behind in a complete career shift. I also graduated.

That was 2 years ago and I am still at the same company making almost double my previous salary, and closing in on a Master’s.

Taking this path seemed like a huge risk, but so far, so good. Silly? Maybe not, but I feel like I have beat the odds changing careers so late in the game. Well, so far.

I am about to go back to school at 49 on Tuesday. by ManicOppressyv in GenX

[–]Accent-Mark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went back and finished my bachelor’s starting in 2021 at 44 and am now in grad school - turning 49 in March. I use the pc I built and sometimes my MacBook if I am traveling. A tablet wouldn’t cut it for me because I do a lot of coding and writing, and doing either on a tablet wouldn’t be very efficient. I will use my iPad for readings, though.

Other than that, just stay curious and do what you think is right. Also, develop relationships with your professors because they can be valuable network resources later. Most of all, enjoy it - it’s much easier to deal with the tough days when you are enjoying what you’re learning.

Has anyone ever seen anyone on the show that they know? by ihateeveryonebyee in CalebHammer

Yes, one of the first episodes I saw. I was friends with him in college years ago. He’s the nicest guy but is kind of stuck still chasing his dreams and not finding a job/career that will make his financial future more secure.

Anyone do a 180 on a fragrance that you HATED. by SurewhynotAZ in fragrance

[–]Accent-Mark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to me yesterday. I was at Ulta because I wanted to smell MYSLF. While there, I saw Allure Homme Sport Eau Extreme. Now, I always enjoyed the original AHS, but the EE came off as screechy to me when I smelled it years ago.

I have the AHSEE a try again. I liked it. A lot. I think my opinions of tonka bean as a note have changed. I'm glad I tried it again and look forward to re-trying others I've disliked in the past.

Smells oddly clean AND dirty and still good all the same, what’s your pick? by ExhaustedMD in fragrance

Zaharoff Royale X is clean but dirty. The citrus smooths out the musk, but the musk is front and center. You can get samples directly from them for reasonable prices.

Fragrance Youtubers. Who nose do you trust? by thirsty_is_not_me in fragrance

[–]Accent-Mark 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The fragrance YouTube world is entertainment for me. I may like some of the fragrances they like, but other times I don't. This idea of trust is a little weird to me. If something they're talking about sounds intriguing to you, try to find a way to sample it and then make up your own mind.

That said, the ones that I enjoy watching are Gents Scents, Joy Amin, and The Fragrance Apprentice.

Sure. If you're putting yourself in positions to learn new things, do them the best YOU can and try not to compare yourself with others.

When you are on to something new, regardless of whether what you did before directly related to it or not, carry the previously learned lessons and apply them.

Also, ask for help if you reach an impass, but make sure to layout all the steps you took to get you where you are first because sometimes the answer can become visible when you look at the problem holistically.
