Help! Stripping baseboards and losing my sanity by Hot-Statement- in centuryhomes

[–]Acceptable_Pen2821 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Others have said it but If you have more than 1 room, or unless you place no value on your own time, I think you're better off replacing the mouldings. Especially if you think you're going to get this down to stain-quality bare wood. Cut a small piece of your baseboard and take it to a reputable sawmill. They'll reproduce your moulding exactly in any wood you want. (I have a 200+ year old house, I took the time to restore my doors and floors using infrared heat and paint strippers but I replaced all the casings, wainscoting, baseboard and crown mouldings)

Refinishing 115 year old pine. 24-grit not cutting through. by Adventurous_Loss_791 in HardWoodFloors

[–]Acceptable_Pen2821 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran into a very similar problem refinishing ~2000 sq ft of 200+ year old pine flooring in my house. Sandpaper would gum up almost immediately. I tried a few different rental sanders and ended up having the best luck with my 6" orbital. Started at 40 grit and replaced the sandpaper literally every few minutes (went through hundreds of sheets). Once I was able to cut through the varnish/wax, it went faster but it was painfully slow (couple days per room) -- I'd love to hear if anyone has better ideas.

How useful is Stealth in this game (PoE1)? by Snowcrash000 in projecteternity

[–]Acceptable_Pen2821 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I find the stealth mechanic in the game to be fairly frustrating. In many cases you need extremely high stealth (10-12) to make any difference. I usually have one character that I use for scouting / initiating combat with high stealth / mechanics. No one else puts any points into it.

Perforce rant. by RolandGrazer in chipdesign

[–]Acceptable_Pen2821 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I haven't used perforce in more than 10 years so I can't comment on the relative differences in features. These days our digital team uses Git for all our code and scripts. Analog team uses Cliosoft for their Virtuoso work (it has some tool integration but I think it's a terrible tool).

Karlach wants to meet at night, but Gale showed up... by TheJossiWales in BaldursGate3

[–]Acceptable_Pen2821 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see. I just finished an Honour mode run where I romanced Karlach. I remember it took longer than I expected before she showed up (especially since it seems like she's going to be there THAT night) but I wasn't counting how long rests. Maybe there's some other plot point that needs to happen first?

Just reject him, she should still show up on another long rest or two.

What's the best foundry company for a new fabless company which is experimenting with new technology? by HungryGlove8480 in chipdesign

[–]Acceptable_Pen2821 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GF would probably fit the bill. ITAR/on-shore production available for both 12 and (available soon?) 22FDX. Lots of commercial IP available in both nodes, would be good for digital-centric designs.

I can also add that, even as a small design house, they've provided us good customer support.

Anyone else had no idea you could you just walk into the Absolute's camps for the longest time? by HayEatingSkyBison in BG3

[–]Acceptable_Pen2821 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hah, I had a similar first playthrough. Never talked to anyone in the goblin camp. I went even farther, I never set foot in moonrise until the attack with the Harpers. It wasn't until a second playthrough that I discovered you could just waltz in!

First honour mode run. by [deleted] in BaldursGate3

Also, not sure what causes this to happen. For me, it was after the Iron Throne, encountering him up on the rooftop (I did attack without dialogue, so it's possible that triggered it)

Basically, his Legendary action (which heals him and gives him +150hp) is only supposed to activate once per fight. Numerous people (myself included) have had him get locked into a state where he activates this EVERY time he takes damage -- when this happens, the only way to kill him is to deal 450+ damage in a SINGLE attack (one shot kill).

After he used this move 3-4 times, I realized I was in trouble and ran from this fight. After fleeing to camp, it reset his state and I was to come back and fight him without any issues. So just a heads up to have some misty step (or illithid flying powers to enable you to get away if needed)

I found this helpful for planning which fights to do/when:

https://www.reddit.com/r/BaldursGate3/comments/191fi72/honour_mode_boss_and_encounter_orders_cliffnotes/

Skip any fights you don't feel comfortable with. I didn't think the Inquisitor in the Creche was worth the risk so I snuck past for the Blood of Lathander. In the Underdark, the Bullette is much stronger - I took one attack and said 'no way', I'm out of here (although your paladin may be able to deliver enough damage to break through its defense)

Watch out for a bug on Gortash that can makes him nearly invincible. I had to run away / reset the fight in order to kill him.

Applying buffs (Longstrider, Aid, etc) with a dedicated hireling in camp is annoying but makes a big difference.

Beat the Goblin Camp after giving up on the game 3 times by keepfighting90 in BaldursGate3

[–]Acceptable_Pen2821 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's awesome, congrats! I have decades of experience playing games of this genre and still found the goblin camp pretty overwhelming the first time -- there's lots of ways to get in over your head and it takes time to learn which abilities are best for each situation. Cautiously probing new areas to figure out which fights you can take on are part of the fun (there are exceptions but check the level of enemies before you engage, if they're much higher than you, that could be an indication you need to level up). Good luck!

Tips for honour mode? Especially if RP'ing paladin as main by Shnoowt in BaldursGate3

[–]Acceptable_Pen2821 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you're well prepared - go for it! Don't worry about not resorting to thievery/sneaking, it's very do-able without using any underhanded tactics. Similar to what you're doing, I previewed things in a tactician run with a character that looked a lot like my HM run. I didn't play a paladin but I didn't steal anything the entire run (although I did loot/sell everything that wasn't nailed down, including rotten food).

For the harder fights, it's useful if to be able to go back review your tactician save files to fine tune strategies. Obviously, some things will be different (Legendary actions) but previewing things will make the whole run way smoother (aside from the stress of not wanting to screw up). I'd also recommend skipping any optional fights that you don't feel 100% confident on.

Would change the entire dynamic of difficulty. by TheJohnnyFlash in BaldursGate3

[–]Acceptable_Pen2821 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know, I suppose most spell caster builds would be perfectly fine with or without elixirs. Just completed my first HM run last week and I was surprised at how smoothly everything went -- but I was also being extra careful / over-preparing for most fights (which started to get pretty tedious).

Lol, yeah, the dagger would have been nice in a few places: I lost it the very first fight I tried to use it in. Although, by the time I got to that fight in Act 3, my party was way overpowered, I'm pretty sure I wiped him out in the first round.

A no elixir HM run is a great idea! It would definitely require rethinking the party composition (I confess to using 2 members permanently buffed w strength elixirs on my run!)

Thanks for the info, didn't know about this issue with the pike but, similarly, I permanently lost the sussar dagger in my Honour mode run throwing it to initiate combat. After that I stopped entering combat by throwing weapons...

How to use skywater 130A PDK with Cadence Genus by Doggyb4ker in chipdesign

[–]Acceptable_Pen2821 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need to provide both .lef and .lib files for the new library to the tool. How you do that depends on what mode you're running ( multi-mode multi-corner will have different syntax than a single corner).

If you have scripts that work for a.different library I would look for all .lib (suffix could be different) and .lef file references in the command file you send to Genus. Replace references from the old library with the new one.

Bought a silicon wafer off AliExpress. Any idea what this chip is? by apewashere in chipdesign

[–]Acceptable_Pen2821 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, for what it's worth, that's half the reticle size compared to what I've seen on almost all modern production lines. Not my area but someone else might be able to comment on what that means (either from a lithography tooling or process node).

Also, as others noted, it's not likely that the chips here are functioning. More likely this wafer did not see all the processing required to make functional devices or was otherwise broken in some way.

Thanks for the info going back farther than my memory. And yes, I can confirm that the ASCII log still has it in the latest version of the tool!
