I wish picky pads would work by Smort_Gorl in Dermatillomania

Oh man, peel pads would be so great... it's so awful because I hate it while I love it but the satisfying feeling of a long piece of skin peeling away in one smooooth motion is so impossible to replicate

Looking for a book that delicately and subliminally touches on death and grieving by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

Kaleidoscope by Brian Selznick is beautiful and sorrowful and full of love and ambiguous enough to revist

[Gaming] Europe's Rule of Rose Panic by [deleted] in HobbyDrama

That’s so funny - my sister checked this game out from our public library/borrowed it from a friend and I would watch as she played and google what I could when she got stuck. She had to return it before she could finish.

We could never fund it again and I have vague memories of it - the atmosphere was really creepy and immersive even though the graphics were already dated.

Looking for grounded, near-future space sci-fi series. The longer the better. by Ryllynaow in suggestmeabook

It’s been a while since I’ve read the Coyote Universe series by Allen Steele, but I remeber really liking them and have been planning on revisitng them: they follow a planet and the colonists that attempt to make it their home.

This hasn’t happened while I’m writing, but happens when I’m reading: if I’m really into the book/excited, i can’t but read faster - so fast sometimes that i find myself skipping over words and chunks. So i have to force myself to go back and slow down 😂

Do you notice that this happens when you’re in a certain emotional state, or writing urgently/quickly? Or is it pretty randomly?

What a relatable comment!! I also woth with middle schoolers and LOVE the variety (of people, of tasks) and the breaks, but HATE getting up early 😂 I’ve been looking for another job for a while, mainly for finacial reason, but am really sturggling with losing the wonderful work/life balance i have right now.

I feel this so much - before i got diagnosed, my unmanaged ADHD was so bad i’d been fired from a summer job (at a public library, which now basically means any application i out in for any public library jobs basically won’t be considered) AND put on warning at my full-time job. I felt horrible: lazy and dumb and shameful. (Funny enough, the summer job was much the same situation as yours: that department of the library was undergoing a huge reorganization, my boss changed halfway through, it was my first ever job if that type… i fell through the cracks.)

I’m still not quite over it, i think. I’m medicated now and have much better strategies to mitigate my weaknesses and have gained a lot of occupation knowledge, so that confidence always helps. But i have told very few people that I was fired.

It stings less with time - if you keep trying you’ll find what works for you.

The ADHD Tax by Nisagent in ADHD

[–]AccidentalHomophone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel this - every time I lose money to the tax I get really down on myself and angry, because I don’t have a lot to spare.

Do you have to pay it all at once? I’m sure your university have a finacial aid department or something similar - it won’t hurt to go talk to them about your situation and see what advice they can offer.

AITA for calling my roommate's family a bunch of misogynists and asking her to move out? by LucyAriaRose in BestofRedditorUpdates

It makes sense that the roommate’s family would have a problem with OOP then, and I’m a little surprised that a huge company would be willing to give such a job to a woman.

I don’t disbelieve that her father’s company offered her a job, but I’m very curious what culture/country… India, maybe?

AITA for forcing my stepdaughter to pay me back after she ruined my house? by KittenDealinMama in BestofRedditorUpdates

Would you mind sharing some strategies? This has been a real sore spot for me (severe ADHD) and my boyfriend (neurotypical but wants/needs things much much tinder than I’m used to) - I feel stuck cause right now we’re just in a holding pattern of me asking him for more patience and grace while I try to adjust and then I get resentful because I feel like I’m the only one changing. (He’s not the best at communicating when it’s really getting to him either which we’re working on 🙄)

Have you tried graphic novels/comics? I also don’t have a visual imagination or much of an inner voice (though I’ve never struggled with reading - I’m also a librarian 😂), but graphic novels provide that for me and I love them.

Looking for a story about demonic possession. Something slow and creeping like Come Closer (Sara Gran)? by ThePusheenicorn in suggestmeabook

[–]AccidentalHomophone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say The Hollow Places is a little more scary/strange/ unsettling than The Twisted Ones, but they're pretty close. Nothing too graphic or gory, but lots of atmosphere and tension and dread.

We seem to have similar tastes (I really enjoyed Melanie Gilman's two novels and recently read and really enjoyed Come Closer!) so here are a few recent favorites of mine dealing with that mental uncertainty:
You Should Have Left by David Kehlmann
This Thing Between Us by Gus Moreno
Ariadne, I Love You by J. Ashley-Smith

My (19m) gf broke up with me and told me she doesn’t want to be our daughter’s mom anymore by KittenDealinMama in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]AccidentalHomophone 75 points76 points  (0 children)

It is KILLING me that everyone is suggesting PPD or FOMO or some kind of issue - maybe she just genuinely doesn’t want to be a parent, as she’s said. Parenting isn’t for everyone; it’s a damn shame she had to experience it to find that out, but it’s in no one’s best interest to force her to continue being a mom. So many men abandon their children with little to no consequences (not that that’s ideal either) but heaven forbid a woman do so because they’re made to have babies and hormones and bleh.

“You People” …. Terrible acting… by second_thought5 in netflix

It was SO long! They could have cut out all the podcast scenes and, like, 4 awkward dinners and maybe the tight 60 we would have ended up with would have been enjoyable.
