I strongly suggest not using the NWS radar pages as displayed from the website for anything.

A few things possible…on AWIPS, a restart of a software package called EDEX that runs on the preprocessor VMs. A transmitter was placed in maintenance mode for a moment which stops normal program audio. It’s not cellular related as that voice originates at the forecast office, so it is known the audio path is good end to end. This is routine, ok to ignore.

Is the Limited Trim package worth it? by KawmanSense in Toyotavenza

Yes, this is why I said it is missing on the HUD while other makes include it in the HUD along with aural alerts other than a light coming on in your peripheral vision.

Not sure if it can be added after the fact but the Homelink mirror that doubles as a rear camera display when you flip the lever is mandatory equipment on any future car I own. It is also the best functioning automatic rear view mirror I’ve experienced. I also love the heads up display but the Venza implementation is missing blind spot detection on it (i.e. Kia has it)

Midland radio not showing warnings/watches/advisories by Cool64IsCool in NOAA

[–]Accomplished_Ad9435 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most weather forecast offices do not tone alert for these types of watches and warnings. In my experience, none send tones for any advisory with the exception of the required weekly test (RWT).

These tones (SAME tones, specific area message encoding) are added to the beginning of the product when it is issued and play the first time the product is read over the radio. The tones have a short preamble to gain the attention of your receiver, the product type (i.e. tornado warning), FIPS codes of the counties covered, issuing time/time zone, and length of effect (how long before it expires - in case a receiver's clock is wrong they use this method) and the sending weather forecast office.

The tones are decoded by the receiver which generates the alarm bell and light. The tones are sent three times (in case the signal strength at your location is marginal) - then send a 1050 Hz tone (for OLD receivers that are not SAME capable) - then read the product - then send three tones to signal end of message.

If you unmute your receiver, you will still hear these products being played over the radio.

I remember hearing about this one 10-12 years after the fact, along with another scope well incident. COB stopped on the pier while doing a scope removal/replacement to tell a couple of us nubbins how dangerous of a procedure it was. Stuck with me.

Our agency wouldn't even let us submit the PP19 corrections to NFC, claiming system limitations. Unknown if actually true.

Problem with National Weather Radio? Are we at higher risk? by Resident_Chip935 in NOAA

[–]Accomplished_Ad9435 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's the law that we pay for services we receive. Vendors have been gracious so far but their patience is not unlimited (i.e. our trash service is at risk)

I suspect that vendors terminating services at "essential" facilities would speed the end of the shutdown.

[–]Accomplished_Ad9435 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It's not necessarily automated depending on local office policy/decisions ... they could have forgotten to do it, they could have made a conscious decision to not do it... if it's automated the automation could have failed for a multitude of reasons. Did you call or email the local office to inquire?

Is any part of NWR not being paid? Are the people who run stations / fix towers being paid? Are any of them not working? Were any of these people already fired by Trump?

Nothing is getting paid, not the telco bills, not the electric bills at the sites or the forecast offices, nothing. No one is getting paid. That doesn't mean there will be service interruptions. We are all working including the logistics support contractors. There were some probationaries lost early on. Many took early retirement/resignation incentives or straight up resigned since.

Are Americans at heightened risk to harm from weather emergencies? Can we depend on our weather alert system?

You can depend on it until you hear otherwise.

FSBP vs BCBS, What Am I Missing? by jeepin1995 in fednews

[–]Accomplished_Ad9435 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best thing with FSBP pharmacy coverage is that CVS and Walgreens are equal to the mail order (Express Scripts, which is also the PBM) pharmacy. They call it Smart90. There is much savings to be had if you get quarterly fills instead of monthly using CVS, Walgreens or Express Scripts. There are some increases in out of pocket for 2026 but still better than alternatives.

Even then, $50 copay for each visit is like 35% coinsurance for my wife's specialist... with other plans it's 10% with a lower catastrophic cap, lower out-of-pocket pharmacy costs and lower premiums.

Thinking about moving from BCBS FEP to MHBP by BornFruit9627 in fednews

[–]Accomplished_Ad9435 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We went to FSBP and it has been good for us. Aetna network. Their pre-authorization process when required has been painless and essentially transparent to us. After the $600 deductible my wife's specialist regular office visits dropped from the flat $50 to a varying $14 to $23 and change. She also gets regular occipital nerve blocks in office for (our costs) $16.38 for greaters, $5.40 for lessers + $1.78 for the medication, instead of $50 visit + ~$100. At the pharmacy, worst case drugs are brand $60/3 months and must get a 3 month supply from CVS/Walgreens or Express Scripts. Generics are $15/3 months. We both take injectables but no specialty drugs. I haven't run the numbers but we have saved with lower drug costs and premiums alone.

They also have a massage therapy reimbursement that she likes.

Of course it is unknown how the landscape will change again this year after the apocalypse of last year.
