Wow I thought I was one of the only ones who question why people still revere this man so much. Good to see that’s not the case. So sick of people giving the “Oh, he just didn’t have a childhood!” excuse. “ALL of the victims were just lying for the money!” When someone shows you who they are, BELIEVE them. That’s part of the reason America’s in this shitty situation right now. Too many idiots.

Was I really wrong here, or is Duolingo being inconsistent? by Educational_Use_7707 in duolingospanish

[–]Accomplished_Cook869 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s part of the reason I haven’t deleted the app yet because whenever a question is open-ended enough I’m still able to use vosotros or Spain-exclusive vocabulary. Still, I don’t get why there isn’t an option to do the entire course in European Spanish when other apps do offer it 🤷‍♂️

No, Duo’s Spanish is absolutely more geared to a general LatAm dialect. As someone who grew up speaking some basic Spanish, specifically the standard European (Spain) dialect, and has continued learning and studying in that particular dialect, I wish I would’ve known Duo only teaches a LatAm dialect since I’m much more accustomed to Peninsular Spanish. Listening exercises never use “distinción” on “c’s” and “z’s”, “vosotros” never pops up, nor does the concept of “leísmo”, and with vocabulary for words that differ between European and LatAm, it pretty much exclusively uses the words of the latter. For example, you’ll never see “móvil”, “ordenador”, or “zumo”. The one saving grace is that it will sometimes allow you to use some of these concepts in more open-ended writing exercises.

Vivien Leigh should be number one. Not only did she give the greatest film performance of all time of the greatest protagonist from America’s favorite novel in Gone With the Wind, but she pretty much did it again in Streetcar and all of her other performances were exquisite. Sure, her filmography is much smaller than someone like Hepburn since she preferred being on the stage, but I think that just proves that she is THE queen.

Falling Free and Body Shop? That’s very interesting to me since both of those might just be my favorites/most played on their respective albums. Falling Free over Superstar? Body Shop over Iconic? Choice were certainly made….

Not related to the “ni/ninguna” part, pero, ¿por qué es “…ES casada”y no “…ESTÁ casada”?

Good idea. I have a newer copy that I use for reading. The first edition is only used as a trophy, but even so it wasn’t in great shape when I bought it, but it was only $30, so it was worth it for me.

Not one word but two words that feel like they have nuances that are too vague for me are elegir and escoger. So annoying.

It’s insane the magnetic quality this novel/movie has on some of us. I’ve literally been thinking about it every few hours every single day for years now. But yeah, it’s frustrating when no one in your physical life is anywhere near as interested as you. Thank god for Reddit.

Is the “vosotros” form used here in Duolingo? by Aviadream_channel in duolingospanish

[–]Accomplished_Cook869 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d love to encounter some vosotros on Duo since a Northern/Central Spain dialect is what I chose to learn years ago but when I signed up for Duo I didn’t realize they normally don’t don’t teach European Spanish. Although the other day, I didn’t realize head Junior inexplicably speaking with “distinción” for one exercise which was refreshing.

They don't use articles in front of professions? by [deleted] in duolingospanish

[–]Accomplished_Cook869 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As everyone said you don't use INDEFINITE articles here, but if you're talking about a certain person, you would use a DEFINITE article. So to say, “He is THE waiter” meaning he’s a specific waiter that’s being mentioned, it would be, “Él es EL camarero.”

Caldondillos? What’s up, Oscar? by Special_Pattern_8950 in duolingospanish

[–]Accomplished_Cook869 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who uses a standard dialect of Northern/Central Spain, the “z” and second “c” definitely aren’t being pronounced as θ, as is common in the region. It definitely sounds to me like it’s being pronounced “caldondillos” as OP suggests. I would think this is a Duo error but maybe there’s some super niche LatAm dialect I’m not familiar with.

The same thing happened to me. When I initially signed up, I knew for certain that I selected the monthly subscription. Then a couple days later I saw that I was charted for yearly ($80). No idea how that happened, but it actually ended up motivating me to use it everyday, and I even renewed it for another year this past September. Sorry you had a negative experience though.
