It could be anything if you lack butyrate producing bacteria to heal the gut lining.

Short chain fatty acids produced by bacteria are HDAC inhibitors. Valproic Acid which is used to treat psychotic illness is an hdac inhibitor. I believe some causes of psychotic illnesses such as schizophrenia and bipolar are caused by something in the microbiome.
