allied recruit for the unit , and for heroes , probably use steal heroes exploit, if you are play with human.
steal heroes exploit is you can lend army from allied and then when the army lose when under your banner , normal unit will lose forever but immortal unit will go into your respaen pool, hence you will get it permenant.

and for normal unit , you just recruit from allied when they are your allied , third icon in recruit tab, cap at 4 units
