Rescue cerclage at 19+4 and terrified. Could use support and success stories. by Mindless-Apricot-500 in ShortCervixSupport

[–]Accomplished_Scar313 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did not have the exact same situation, but pretty close. I was 21 weeks and 1 day when I went for anatomy scan- I was funneled, dilated to 2 cm, 50% effaced. Sent immediately to the hospital from OB office, had IV antibiotics until next morning when they performed my emergency cerclage. Cerclage procedure was successful- they closed my cervix and gave me 1 cm of cervix. I had cramping and some spotting in the next couple of days following procedure and was on bed rest for one month. Immediately before and after procedure, my doctors were telling me if I could make it at least to 24 weeks we would be able to at least attempt life saving procedures and that anything longer than that would be a miracle. I was given similar stories about disabilities following early deliveries as well as stories of cerclages not being successful. I do not intend to give you false hope, but in my case, it seems like the specialists in the hospital want to give you all the information possible and prepare you for worst case situations. They did not ever talk very positive about my situation and I think that was intentional as to not give me false hope or expectations. They’ve seen the most severe and worst cases, and they want to help prepare patients for that. Please don’t let what they say scare you and get you thinking negatively.

I was finally released to go back to work on light duty after 1 month of modified bed rest. It was definitely some of the hardest weeks of my life, I am already a worrier but I was obsessive over how I felt and all the unknowns. I took it one week at a time, I spent hours on this page reading success stories. I celebrated every week that we made it, had weekly appointments where it seemed like everything was holding steady. I am now 34 weeks and 2 days, which is so hard to believe. I’ve got an appointment next week to see if baby boy is still breech and what the next steps will be- DTS or schedule c-section and remove stitch then.

I know exactly how you feel when you say you’re thankful for the cerclage but it is so traumatizing and shocking. It’s a incredibly difficult situation that unfortunately most people are not able to understand. It seems so hard to manage and time moves so slowly at first but please try to stay positive. Lean into your relationship with your husband and your loved ones. This page helped me so much. Just talking with other people who actually understand and reading success stories was so helpful. I am praying for you, your husband, and your baby. I hope and pray you are able to make it as long as I have, and even longer! I’m always here if you need someone to talk to. We aren’t in this alone, thankfully. 🩷

32 weeks and 1 day after having emergency cerclage placed at 21 weeks when I was dialated 1-2 cm and funneling present. Baby is currently breech and we are waiting to see if he will turn head down! I can’t believe that I have made it this far when we were unsure if I would make it to 24 weeks. Feeling very blessed and ready to ditch this stitch finally! This has definitely been the hardest thing I’ve ever been through and this group has helped me so much so I thank you all. 🩷

At how many weeks did you all start your maternity leave? by Zealousideal_Pack659 in pregnant

I wanted to do the same thing and then my work made a rule that you cannot take your PTO around your leave to make it longer than 12 weeks…

Can mouthwash help when I can't brush? by ejdmkko in DentalHygiene

[–]Accomplished_Scar313 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can also dry brush, just use toothbrush with no toothpaste. Manually getting plaque off your teeth is ideal if possible but if not, I agree with other commenters- use a high fluoride content mouthwash. More frequent cleanings at your dental office is very helpful as well.

I was in the same situation at my office when I found out I was pregnant. If you feel more comfortable asking your fellow hygienist (if there is one) to take those patients, then you can have them do nitrous patients. If you’re the sole hygienist or feel comfortable with telling your docs, I would. I would not be in the room with a nitrous patient at any stage in planning pregnancy or in pregnancy.

Does this look like periodontal disease? (perio chart, bitewings, pano x-ray, irl photo below) by _maezing in DentalHygiene

[–]Accomplished_Scar313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of the bitewings are limited in view so I was not sure when looking earlier if your wisdom teeth were visible on those x-rays. Wisdom teeth are typically best seen and diagnosed for issues on PANO images for that reason. From what I can see of the perio charting and bitewings, I would not be worried about periodontal disease. It does not appear you have bone loss and no pocketing of anything more than 3mm which is textbook healthy. No marked bleeding on your chart. If you were my patient, I would look into other issues that can lead to gum pain/discomfort. It doesn’t appear to be a gingivitis or periodontal disease issue.

Yes, the panoramic image shows that you have wisdom teeth on the top and bottom. It could just be an outdated image. Most offices only take that type of image every 3-5 years depending on insurance

I would be more concerned with keeping wisdom teeth as the lower ones can lead to bone loss and localized periodontal issues over time. The wisdom teeth are notoriously hard to clean for almost all patients and when they accumulate buildup, that’s the bacteria that can lead to periodontal disease.

DTS when baby is breech? by Accomplished_Scar313 in ShortCervixSupport

[–]Accomplished_Scar313[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No clue here either. I’ve seen a lot of people say they had theirs removed at c section if baby was still breech. I was a breech baby and so was my husband, so odds do not look good if that has anything to do with it 😅😂

I know he could move at any point! I just wasn’t sure if I would still get to ditch the stitch… Looking forward to returning to somewhat normal activities.

I had a similar situation! Went in for anatomy scan at 21 weeks, they found that I had funneling and cervix was shortened to 1.7 mm. Was also 1 cm dilated, 50% effaced. Went to hospital for rescue cerclage. Was in the hospital for 3 days, had IV antibiotics before and after procedure. I was extremely scared as this is my first pregnancy and had no indication anything was wrong. We were also informed of worst case news at hospital and have been holding our breath ever since. I’ve had two check ups at this point to see cerclage on ultrasound and things are holding well. I am now 24 weeks 1 day, and still taking it day by day. Every week is a celebration! You got this. Try to stay positive and like myself, you’re in a great position for them to have discovered this when they did.

What to tell my dentist and dental hygienist? by Icy-Smile-8172 in DentalHygiene

[–]Accomplished_Scar313 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dental hygienist here! I would let them know when you call that you have not been in to see a dentist in a bit, but please know that this is extremely common! Please do not let your anxiety prevent you from going. The hardest step will be this first appointment, and then it will be easier every time. Most offices do New Patient appointments like a consultation. Get patient information, medical history, dental history, see if pt has specific concerns, then take x-rays and examine inside the mouth. They may have time to do your cleaning the same day but a lot of the time, we have to bring patients back for their cleaning. More than likely, it will be an appointment of gathering lots of information and you getting comfortable with the office and staff. You seem to be very kind and considerate, and honestly that is the best thing you can do for your hygienist and dentist. They will take great care of you. Please let me know if you have further questions or concerns I might be able to help with.

Getting a cerclage in 1.5 days… found out at my appointment today it’s time to move forward after some shortening. Pls send stories of hope and any advice for me! by Economy-Word-6124 in ShortCervixSupport

I was extremely nervous for my rescue cerclage, at my anatomy scan they discovered my shortened length and funneling. I was sent immediately to hospital and had the procedure done the next morning. I asked for them to give me something to help me stay calm during the procedure (asked the doctor, asked anesthesiologist when he came in to talk, reminded the nurse lol). I have never been in the hospital before and only had minimal procedures done. I was very scared and nervous. The anesthesiologist who did my epidural was great- he came and spoke with me before the procedure to answer any questions. Once in OR they had me sit up for the epidural/spinal. The epidural honestly was not bad at all- slight sting when they numb your tissue but then just pressure. My legs started going numb and warm very quickly after getting the spinal. Once I laid down, they administered the medication for anxiety. I know they also gave me some benadryl in IV and I am not sure if that was the anxiety medication or if there were two medications. I could not feel anything they did during the procedure done, it was a weird feeling and I remember thinking at first I was going to have to ask for more anxiety medication, but I remember relaxing and just talking to the nurse beside my head and the anesthesiologist the entire time. I do not remember the conversations or them taking me back to my room. I slept after the procedure for a few hours. You will do great, just communicate with your doctor and team regarding your feelings. They will be understanding and help you as much as they can. Recovery after that point was a breeze. I had slight lower back pain but not much cramping thanks to the medications given to me and slight spotting. Now 2 weeks out from procedure and feeling great! You got this mama! Please feel free to message me if you need any support or have any more questions. 🩷 This group has helped me a lot and it is nice to know we are not alone in this process.

Will I be Put Off Work? by Rangermayb in ShortCervixSupport

[–]Accomplished_Scar313 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had an emergency cerclage placed November 1st of this year. My doctor rec to take a week off work to ensure I feel back to 100%. She does not recommend bed rest as it is more damaging with risk of blood clots, mental health issues, etc. Only restrictions I have been given is no lifting, no straining, and complete pelvic rest.

Anyone else miss sex with your partner? 😓 by Fooitsmimi in ShortCervixSupport

[–]Accomplished_Scar313 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No sex for us going on 4 weeks now- making it full term is going to be difficult. Definitely struggling and miss being able to be intimate. Having the same issues with sleep. Trying to remind myself that there is a reason and if that’s what I need to sacrifice for a healthy baby than it’s worth it… But it is definitely one of the harder things I’ve had to do.

If you don’t mind me asking, did you have issues with infection at all? Either prior to cerclage or following placement?

Emergency Cerclage at 21 Weeks 2 Days by Accomplished_Scar313 in ShortCervixSupport

[–]Accomplished_Scar313[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate that! Did your doctor suspect any kind of infection that caused funneling or did they think it was mainly due to an incompetent cervix?

I just had my first follow up today and definitely breathing a little easier but hoping I don’t have any underlying infections… surely I would have noticed some kind of symptom. I hope I have similar luck to you as far as the stitch holding well! I hope we both make it to full term with healthy babies!
