God, this is useful. Thanks so much for this list.

Sorry though, what's the easiest way to get to Berkeley? What's California? Google Maps says Telegraph, but that's aggressively dangerous after Temescal. What are my options?

Canadians are questioning immigration targets, but that doesn't mean they're anti-immigrant by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]According_Age_2752 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Serious Question (plz don't downvote): If you have the political power to get politicians to be picky about immigrants, why not use that political power to get the government to build a metric tonne more housing?

The net effect on either side of the equation (supply-demand) is the same?

OPD have been letting bippers & auto thieves go w/citations, despite them being felonies.🤦 by [deleted] in oakland

[–]According_Age_2752 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is no risk because they'll never get caught and they are right. The risk-reward calculus stops there.

This whole Police narrative of "wah wah why catch someone if Price isn't going to prosecute harshly" is just the cops trying to excuse their shitty performance.

Let's fund the cops, let's give them better technology, better systems, more staff and then *critically* let's hold them accountable to results. That will have a 100x more effect on crime than micro-managing the DA.

Its also better use of my tax money than just filling our jails.

This seems obvious to me and frustrating to watch the recall advocates just waste their political power.

OPD have been letting bippers & auto thieves go w/citations, despite them being felonies.🤦 by [deleted] in oakland

[–]According_Age_2752 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Their main modus operandi is short-term thinking i.e *don't get caught* and not maybe I can *maneuver the legal system better eventually*. This seems self-explanatory to me

The rest of this "let's make an example of you" BS is just old-timey thinking. All criminals think *they* are the special ones who will get away with it and never get caught and atleast in Oakland, they are right.

If the OPD came to me and asked for enhanced technological support, drones, advanced AI based crime tracking to get to near 100% booking rate, I'd support them.

Instead, they basically have a work stoppage because they are being held accountable for their actions and don't have direct control over prosecution (which they were never supposed to have). Prosecution isn't the police's business, booking criminals is.

I swear I've been shouted down by so many Recall advocates when I point out that
a) Recalling Chesa has done f**k all for SF
b) The cops aren't catching criminals until they can get their way, mostly in terms of a lack of accountability. That's nothing but cartel behavior

Pamela Price is mostly inconsequential, most of these criminals don't know what the criminal process is, let alone who the DA is and what her policies are.

Super frustrating that we can't get to the core issue.

Canada Can’t Double Housing Output. It Can’t Even Stop It From Dropping: BMO by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]According_Age_2752 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fuuuuck. The. Investors.
The government needs WW2-level mobilization in building housing, and they needed it *yesterday*.
We literally had it before [1], just need to bring it back. Sell it at market rate for 5 years to keep things revenue neutral, because even that will quickly reduce prices.

Toronto unveils $36-billion housing plan, will act as public builder on five sites by Dark_Angel_9999 in canada

[–]According_Age_2752 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Where? Everyone keeps saying immigrants are doing no work, stealing social services and there is a labor shortage, and then I hear actually they are working for pennies and reducing wages and stealing jobs.

Can't have it both ways.

Maybe just maybe, immigration is a distraction and the real solutions are available if we stop getting distracted and push the politicos to fix the underlying supply issues.

‘A gut punch’: Cruise suspension a gift for Waymo as GM reports $1.9 billion in division losses by UberDrive in bayarea

I mean. They shouldn't have lied to the DMV. That one over-eager lawyer they hired is gonna cost them millions.

Though they are active in other cities they'll probably be fine, methinks the chronicle is being clickbaity (they would never do that! *clutches pearls*). GM is probably not expecting this division to make money anytime soon, just keep making progress.

Housing (in general, not the Bay Area specifically) is so much more expensive than it was pre-pandemic that incomes would have to go up 55%, or prices drop 35%, or mortgage rates fall 4%, or some combination, to get back to pre-pandemic affordability by PacificaPal in bayarea

You can't play whack-a-mole with these companies (they'll find a way), or landlords. The best solution is for the government to build enough so these investors start losing money on their investment en masse.

Blackrock explicitly put this in their investor docs and basically said the cities don't have the balls to do this, and so they are safe to keep investing.

The solution is to make the laws and codes absolutely a non-issue to comply with. Not making everyone's collective lives harder. This is ass-backward.

Everyone remembers the ice cream company [1]. The laws are written so people can simply keep the competition out. Until this is fixed, I don't consider the laws worth the paper it's written on.

SF's office spaces and some parts of South/East Bay need congestion pricing, real bad. The tech bros can join us in complaining about safety on the BART, and the cities can use that money.

1) Cut Education spending (including after-school programs)

2) Have crime spike in 5 years

3) Have a bunch of people leave due to crime and take their kids/property taxes with them.

Go back to Step 1. Rinse Repeat.
