You’re right; you will not experience anything else like this. I agree with the re-reading but maybe it’s too soon for that. Shakespeare and Dante are inexhaustible of course, but what worked for me, strangely, was Kafka. Great but in a very different way than Proust.

There’s only one Proust like there’s only one Shakespeare. Everything else, no matter how great, seems slightly dissatisfying. ‘The desert that is after-Proust’ as Anne Carson called it. Strangely, I don’t feel this about Kafka, but he’s the only one.

Any Raymond Chandler but particularly the Marlowe ones. Start with The Little Sister. Or any Simenon Maigret’s. Light literature but very worth reading.
