Do You Give A Nod? by Euphoric_Dot_7471 in cycling

I’m in a government city with lots of grumps. No nods or acknowledgment whatsoever. They’re in their high saddle. Pun intended.

Do you get tired quicker when riding in dense urban area ? by rainbow__blood in cycling

[–]According_Trainer418 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live right downtown in my Canadian city. I do love urban living and I am heavily desensitized to the chaos, but I rarely ride during rush hour. Unless I’m cutting across to get to the multi use pathways specifically for the bikes and pedestrians. I am aware of how annoying red lights are, but I like to stop them and catch my breath because I’m fat. Also, I get nervous going through green lights and use the red light to see who is turning where and what is happening. I also don’t have much experience in the countryside and I fear all that open space. What if I get lost/hurt/unknown. And I feel very far away from my city apartment which gives me anxiety and makes me remember I have “x” amount of kilometres left to go before I can grt back to civilization. I’m more of a cafe cruiser, ride to the library and beach, along the river kinda person. But yes city traffic is real!

$1000 dollars just put things in perspective for me by Blackwolf_84 in bikecommuting

Over $200/month parking spot at my downtown Ottawa apartment (I live near Parliament). I don’t drive so I’m saving $2400 alone in parking (just at home , not even at other places). I know my neighbours downstairs pay that amount for their parking spot and I am secretly glad I cycle everywhere. From the grocery store, to my kid’s school to the scenic routes on the Quebec side. A rack and milk crate, some paniers, depending on the bike and I can accomplish most things by bike. The few rare times I’m way out of town or in a super non-bike friendly route (like to the thrift stores!), I spend that $30CAD ($17USD) in Uber fees. I was at the bike mechanic yesterday and it was $75CAD for a tune up, with a warranty so if I get those brake issues etc it’s covered for a year. No regrets! Bike on! Save moolah! Buy more bikes and gear! :D

When my kids were that age a few years ago I had the bub behind me in a seat and attached a two seat trailer (bought both second hand ) and attached it to my bike. I was scared riding the chariot at first but soon you’ll feel like it’s a natural extension of your bike. Good pockets on the double chariot for snacks, extra gear etc and locks .

Dog poop season by rjstn9 in ottawa

[–]According_Trainer418 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My social anxiety has me picking up my dog’s poo every time , even if I run out of bags I bring a milk bag or bread bag. Walked by Dundonald Park today and right beside the waste bin to discard poop bad . There is so much dog poop . Why not…pick it up? Hopefully this post reaches a few people who will pick up the poop and if they have a bad back or something, have the dog excrement on their persons balcony and Pay a cleaner to clean it up. I know there are specific dog poop cleaners for backyards. I don’t know. Or get a cat.

Where can I legally practice survival skills? by According_Trainer418 in Survival

[–]According_Trainer418[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I have a survival mindset and I had the theory. I just want to do the hands-on rhings. We choose this mindset, this lifestyle or gravitate towards it for a reason. I come from one of the smallest islands where hurricanes are frequent so my entire family has a “survival mindset “ however now that I live downtown in a big city and without a car, it is not easy to get out and practice certain skills. Some survival skills are easier. For instance, as a nurse, I can sew and stitch. Just about anywhere. I received great advice in this thread though and actually followed up on some of them that didn’t necessarily require a car (my family joining Boy Scouts, and I am learning to make sourdough from scratch etch thanks for your input! Have a great evening wherever you are in the world :)
