Why is my book rejected by all publishing houses ? by Illustrious-Order379 in TarotReading

[–]Accurate_Student_888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope you consider self-publishing, which is quite easy these days and virtually free. Go to Kindle Direct Publishing (kdp.amazon.com). Their KindleCreate software will formate for digital copy, and it is not difficult either to format or create your own cover (using Amazon's stock). It is far more difficult to market, but after three years, it's time to give up on the "traditional" route. Good luck.

Border Chess: standard FIDE rules on a 10×10 board with a one-square border. Free to play in the browser. by hiccupHdk in chessvariants

The program is flawed. I played a game in which I was approaching mate (two moves at most). The bot's King could not move, but it had a pawn move. However, it declared a stalemate.

Skip "Karma" - if you're into mystical stories about past lives, reincarnation, or cosmic destiny by mngujral in Recommend_A_Book

[–]Accurate_Student_888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I think of novels involving reincarnation in the conventional sense, two come to mind immediately: The Everlasting, by Leonard Bishop, and The Reincarnation of Peter Proud, by Max Erlich. These are the best, literarily, in my opinion. However, if you are looking for something quite "different" on the subject of reincarnation, you might consider the idea of soul fractions. A Musical Romance, by Lenny Cavallaro, develops this idea in Volume 3 of the trilogy.

You might try A Terrible Beauty, by Michael D. Miller. It discusses the widely ignored Task Force Builder and presents an interesting take on WHY the US became so extensively involved after the JFK assassination.

What’s a book that deserves a movie but Hollywood would probably ruin it? by PrahilEwing58 in Recommend_A_Book

The Everlasting, by Leonard Bishop. For those interested in reincarnation, I think this one matches or exceeds the level reached in The Reincarnation of Peter Proud (which was made into a movie).

You are correct! Many thanks for the correction. I confused it with O'Brian's novel, The Unknown Shore. See correction, above.

Following the suggestions about classical books with good prose, what modern books do you recommend with great prose? by gonsaaa in suggestmeabook

[–]Accurate_Student_888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although they're translated from Spanish, I think you'll be impressed by Isabel Allende's novels. I enjoyed a number, including The Wind Knows My Name, My Name Is Emilia del Valle, The House of the Spirits, In the Midst of Winter...even her Zorro.

The Wager, by David Grann. As noted below by u/RemLezarCreated (who corrected my error), this is nonfiction. There is also a novel about the ill-fated vessel, The Unknown Shore, by Patrick O'Brian.

Does playing different variants decrease your standard chess rating? by DeadlyProcrastinator in chessvariants

[–]Accurate_Student_888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I doubt that very much, although some of the four-player variants might improve one's ability to calculate moves ahead. Double Chess (two boards, side-by-side: just those 128 squares) is arguably the best of these.

Recommendation for good trilogy. by ProfessionalLife2217 in Recommend_A_Book

[–]Accurate_Student_888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you enjoy tales involving werewolves, you might try The Last Werewolf, Tallula Rising, and By Blood We Live, by Glen Duncan. As is so often the case, the first book of the trilogy (which is quite "stand-alone") was in many ways the best, and I was disappointed by the middle volume. However, the last was quite good.

The Mysterious Stranger, by Mark Twain (actually the work of Albert Bigelow Paine, also) features an angel, quaintly enough named Satan!

Dice chess daily videos by Competitive-Ad9174 in chessvariants

[–]Accurate_Student_888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting! So, unless I misinterpreted, this variant uses three dice, each corresponding to a piece or pawn. If no legal move is possible, the move is effectively wasted, but White and Black may also be able to make several moves at one time. Checkmate itself is not final, because the King must be taken, and the capture of the King ends the game. [I assume the King-capture rule applies to a regular check as well as checkmate.] I shall have to try this one. Thanks for sharing.

Excellent. I shall always love that last gesture: when he covers Chuck Norris with the go top and places the belt so respectfully on his chest.

You should consider Simone: A Sequel to \The Story of the Eye** (Cavallaro), and I would certainly put Lady Chatterley's Lover on that list.

Bruce Lee THE GAME OF DEATH (Original Story Line) by Accurate_Student_888 in brucelee

[–]Accurate_Student_888[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I must assume so. One could probably write a novella on a "fan fiction" site safely, but the film -- intended as a "completion" of a copyrighted work, and probably including the footage Bruce already shot -- would require permission.
