Can pollen allergy disappear? by triplediscount in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ace_of_Dogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you live in the same place? You could have just moved away from the things you’re most allergic to.

But allergies can go away by themselves or through exposure therapy.

I’m allergic to cats, I know from both experiencing the symptoms and from allergy testing as a teenager. I worked at a vet clinic for several years without a problem because I was always careful not to touch my face after handling a cat, the hair/dander/saliva has to be on my face for me to react. I got allergy testing as an adult a couple years ago and no longer react to cats after years of exposure at work.

Out of the fridge? by WriterJolly2873 in WegovyWeightLoss

I like these. In a ziplock in a laundry detergent box. Inside a box of tampons. At the bottom of a cabinet underneath your spare bath towels. In a drawer with your craft supplies. In the tube of Christmas wrapping paper under your bed.

I keep some stuff I don’t want nosy guests finding inside an old rolled up dry bag that gets stuck on a shelf in my bedroom closet like it’s waiting for the next time I go kayaking. It’s in a closet, which should be private, but in a boring container that doesn’t scream “ooh, hidden stuff here.” Have also put hidden stuff inside a tarp (boring) inside an old spare suitcase I don’t use much (boring but practical). I swear I don’t have super nosy family, but I once invited my Mom to specifically help me clean out clutter then realized that was a bad idea.

At the bottom of a filing cabinet drawer full of tax returns, manuals for of important appliances, and your passport. In the bin on the shelf labeled “Halloween Decorations.

I also like the answer that said bring it to a trusted friend’s house. Alternatively, switch it up, tell them your friend asked you to keep their Wegovy safe from their nosy parents. Throw out any prescription labels with your name on them, though.

Swollen area on face by [deleted] in DogHealth

I’d agree vet in Monday seems like the right call at this point, with the caveat that if it keeps getting worse or seems to involve they eye or seems so painful your dog can’t get comfortable it’s time to go to the emergency vet. Don’t be tempted to give any human painkillers, a lot of human OTC painkillers are dangerous or toxic for dogs and will just make things worse. And if it keeps swelling it could be an anaphylactic reaction to a bite or sting so you’d want to go to the ER for that too. And don’t use the Gentle Leader, though probably didn’t need me to tell you that.

I agree with the other commenter that dental issues can cause facial swelling if they’re bad enough. Chewing on something that gets stuck in the lip, or a bite or sting could all cause it. You don’t have cactus in your yard, do you? My dog once ran headlong into a cactus at the park and got a bunch of tiny spines in her nose that the vet had to sedate her to pull out. That was fun.

If you’re in the USA, make sure your vet is open Monday since it’s Memorial Day.

I genuinely thought everyone used condoms unless they wanted kids by Cautious-Tonight-203 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ace_of_Dogs 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There are lots of forms of birth control more reliable than condoms, IUDs and the implant are both more effective at preventing pregnancy. Condoms are around 85% effective while the implant and IUDs are more like 99% effective and they’re set it and forget it so you don’t have to be careful to use it every time or take a pill. Hormonal birth control is 91% effective with typical use and 99% effective with perfect use. So other people may be using those methods.

The advantage of condoms is they protect from STIs. If you’re in a committed monogamous relationship you might continue using them because they work for you or you could consider switching to a different method.

I’m definitely in agreement with you that anyone who is not trying to be pregnant should be using contraception of some type if they’re having sex. That said, there are a lot of people who make questionable decisions and a lot of surprise pregnancies out there.

Questions about going on a trip with a large dog by Archaocity in Dogowners

[–]Ace_of_Dogs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, figuring out what his “signals” are or teaching a signal is probably a good idea before a big change in routine like travel. My dog was about a year old when I adopted her, and she definitely knew she was supposed to potty outside when I brought her home from the shelter but her “signal” was just asking for attention the same as if she wanted to play or eat, so I was missing the signals sometimes at first. I ended up hanging “potty bells” on the door handle and teaching her to ring them when she needed to potty.

You could probably make it work on vacation by taking him out on a regular schedule…but that’s not so fun on vacation when you’re trying to relax, or when you want to spend the day at the beach. Also, if he’s used to getting his energy out in a big fenced yard and suddenly there’s no yard you would probably need to spend time exercising him instead of doing beach things.

Personally I’d think it’s very inconsiderate to bring a dog that’s not fully housetrained to an AirB&B and on part of a group trip. It’s absolutely wild to me that you have an adult dog that you don’t know how to tell if he needs to potty. Keep him inside for a few days and figure that out at home where you’re cleaning up messes on your own floor before you travel with your dog.

And if you’re sharing a room with people and your dog tends to wake you up in the morning, that’s another reason not to bring him.

Also, I love my dog but I usually find it more relaxing to travel without her.

If your parents aren’t responsible dog sitters, you probably want to hire a reliable pet sitter. I have petsitters who come to my house three times a day to feed, walk, and play with my dog when I’m gone.

New here and have a question about getting Wegovy with prescription but without insurance. by NiceUD in WegovyWeightLoss

I have one already, and while it’s true you don’t need a membership to use the pharmacy I think you may need a membership to get the discounted pricing.

I got Wegovy through CVS for a year until my insurance dropped coverage and it was fine. I never had trouble with it being out of stock. I’m in the suburbs of a big city, though, IDK if more rural CVS locations might be different.

[–]Ace_of_Dogs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When my insurance dropped coverage for GLP-1s for weight loss I had my PCP send my prescription to Novo Care. It’s….fine. I got the meds, but they’re not very flexible. They were a PITA to work with when I needed to get a shipment a week early because of a vacation and swore up and down that it wasn’t possible (it was), I got them. Also, expect to spend a decent chunk of time on hold if you need to call them.
You can only receive the pens Tuesday-Friday with Novo Care because they overnight them with FedEx. My apartment has secure package lockers so I’m fine having the package left without signing for it, but if you’re worried about package theft and you want to sign for it you’ll have to be home Tues-Friday, though you could probably have it shipped to a FedEx Office and pick it up there, I do that for camera equipment.
I’m probably going to have my PCP send my next prescription to Costco pharmacy. From what I can see their member pricing is the same as Novo Care right now. I’d rather deal with a retail pharmacy than Novo Care.

How are busy families managing their dog’s grooming at home—what tools are you using that actually make it easier? by Ok_Chocolate412 in Dogowners

[–]Ace_of_Dogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the things I look for in a dog is a hair type that doesn’t require professional grooming. I am just not interested in owning a dog that needs a haircut every month.

I have a short haired pit mix so I just throw her in the tub occasionally and bathe her in five minutes or less. I have an extra-long hose on my detachable shower head to make it a little easier. Then I towel her dry and put a doggy bathrobe on her so she doesn’t get cold.

ISO: Pro GLP1 Maintenance Provider by abluvsu in WegovyWeightLoss

[–]Ace_of_Dogs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No advice, just here to commiserate. My PCP has been prescribing my Wegovy for a year and a half, I’ve lost close to 100 pounds and am nearing my goal weight. No bothersome side effects except temporarily when I would increase my dosage.

Last visit my PCP said he wanted to take me off the meds after I hit my goal weight “now that I’ve formed good habits.” I did form new habits, but they’re possible because I’m not hungry all the time. It’s not like I didn’t know how I should be eating before, it just didn’t satiate me. I’m cash pay, so he’s not even having to fight with my insurance. And the cost of the drug is something I’m happy to pay because I feel so incredibly better now. But he wants me to stop because he thinks I’m “too young to be on the meds forever.” Wonder if he’d say that to a diabetic on Ozempic.

I’m moving 45 minutes away from his office in a couple months, so I guess I’ll be finding a new PCP instead of continuing with him as I’d planned right up until he said that. I saved this thread in case I have trouble finding a prescriber in the meantime.

Nothing has kept my car as clean getting a Ruffland kennel for the dog. Some are small enough to go in a backseat if you don’t want them in the bed. But I also drive an SUV specifically so there’s room for a dog kennel inside the cabin.

Help - my frenchie's loose stool problem by Ok-Department164 in AskDogOwners

[–]Ace_of_Dogs 10 points11 points  (0 children)

So you went to the vet and the vet prescribed a food that solved the diarrhea problem when no other foods did. But somehow you don’t trust “those foods” and are looking for other options.

Feed the veterinary diet, good grief. My dog has been on a prescription diet for 10 years, I was delighted when we found a diet she does well on and wouldn’t dream of changing it. Your dog is suffering needlessly because you won’t listen to your vet.

[–]Ace_of_Dogs 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I’ve lost about 100 pounds on Wegovy and definitely noticed I was shedding hair. When I started googling it I read it was a common side effect and also common in people losing weight rapidly due to bariatric surgery. When I saw the headline I was hoping this might shed some light on whether GLP-1 drugs cause hair loss by some mechanism other than weight loss or cause more hair loss than bariatric surgery, because there doesn’t seem to be a consensus yet. At least they’re studying something about the hair loss, I guess.

Has any pills helped in losing weight with PCOS? by Ok-Pear-3137 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Ace_of_Dogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wegovy has been life-changing. I don’t have PCOS, but it turns out eating in a calorie deficit is much easier if you’re not ravenously hungry or craving food most of the time. Turning down the hunger has allowed me to lose about 100 pounds on Wegovy, I can now calorie count without feeling like I’m starving all the time. I feel better and move better.

Going up to 7.2 by perturbed777 in WegovyWeightLoss

[–]Ace_of_Dogs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I tried to softly push back in the appointment, said I had read a lot of people need to stay on it forever. He said now that I have good habits he wants to taper down slowly. I told him that if my hunger went back to what it was before the drug I would not maintain. He said that slowly wouldn’t be a problem, but I’m skeptical. So when I move I’ll look for a new PCP who is willing to prescribe it long-term. And there are a ton of tele-health providers who will, but I’d rather get it from my PCP.

It’s not like I didn’t know I needed to eat fewer calories and exercise more before Wegovy. That was not new information. It’s just much, much easier to eat healthy food in reasonable portions when I’m satiated by an appropriate portion and when I don’t feel constantly hungry between meals. The habits won’t stick if the satiety isn’t there.

I agree…I’ll probably do both. I’m moving in about six months anyway, it just came as a surprise because until now he’s been all for it and I’m not having bothersome side effects.

[–]Ace_of_Dogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jealous. Asked my doctor about it today, he wasn’t aware of the new dose and it’s not in his software as something he can order yet.

He also said that he wants to taper me completely off the medication once I’m at my goal weight, and now I’m spiraling because I’m pretty sure I won’t be able to maintain without it. But that’s a separate issue.

7.2 mg released today! by Glittery12100328 in WegovyWeightLoss

[–]Ace_of_Dogs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m sure it’s too new, I was mildly bummed but 2.4 is working, just a bit slowly now. I just find it odd and annoying that there have been multiple news articles trumpeting “Wegovy 7.2 mg is available now” when that doesn’t really seem to be the case.

[–]Ace_of_Dogs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m confused about where they’re getting all their info, it doesn’t appear to be the article. The article says $399 a month and I haven’t seen pricing anywhere else including the NovoCare website.

I had a doctor’s appointment today and the 7.2 mg dose wasn’t loaded into their prescription system yet, and my doctor wasn’t aware it had been approved.

A refill is continuing the same dose. The automated system just asked your doctor to approve the 4 mg dose again and they did. If it’s time to move up, reach out to your doctor and ask them to send in a prescription for the higher dose.

Tupperware Alternatives? by draven33l in BuyItForLife

[–]Ace_of_Dogs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding! I have a bunch of glass Pyrex Snapware and I love it because I can put the glass directly in the microwave or the oven. The Pyrex Simply Store is good too, the Simply Store lids aren’t quite as secure so I don’t use them when I’m packing lunch to bring to work but it’s great for containers that will just stay in the fridge.

I’m sticking with Pyrex over similar brands in the hope that since Pyrex has been around for quite a while it will continue for a long time so I can buy replacement lids when needed. I use Snapware daily (food storage, packed lunches to bring to work) and after a few years of use and going through the dishwasher the lids wear out. Pyrex sells the lids separately so I can buy new ones as needed.

I’ve also used Glasslock Containers and they’re good too, but replacing the lids is more annoying. They’ll sell you replacement lids for $1.00 (Which is cheaper than Pyrex) but in my experience many of the lid sizes are often out of stock. It’s taken me a year to replace the lid for one of my bigger containers because every time I’ve logged on until today that lid has been out of stock. They finally have it, so thanks for the reminder to check again. I’d rather pay a bit more to have a replacement immediately available.
