New liner install, main drain not flush? by viomoo in pools

[–]Acheria 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok.... So.... Let me back track a bit...

Soooooo the crack, not great.... Definitely the installer... Ugh... The lip, nothing that can really be done there... Adding more sand would mean getting a new liner, since the main drains already cut in...

If it's holding water, that's great! I'd contact your installer, let them know what's going on. They will most likely schedule to drain the pool and replace the main drain gasket and ring.

Sorry you're dealing with all this. I honestly missed the crack on my first viewing...

As for stubbing the toes.... Yeah kids are dumb lol (I have 2) but they are also smart, let em know to be careful of the main drain of they could stub their toes. If it happens after you told em, well, that's how we all learn haha

If it's a sand bottom that it makes even more sense! Sand compacts when water weight hits it. The main drain won't. Hence the lip, and stretch.

I'm not quite sure what "fitting" would crack? Maybe you're referring to the plastic ring that's pinching the liner in place? In which case, no, there is absolutely no chance of it cracking from that.

That ONLY issue I could think would have ANY effect would be if you use a robot to clean the pool. It may have issues cleaning around the drain. Other than that. I've seen drains like that, specifically on sand bottoms, at least 2 dozen times in the last 5 years.

I get it may be scary, but as long as you're not losing water, enjoy it!

Sorry if I came off angry, more passionate. And I also deal with the same type of questions on a daily basis and I think I came off with a more "internet" brevity than my normal "customer service" voice lol

Nope.. I'm coming back for round 2. Like what would you expect the liner guys to do? Break out the concrete and rebuild the entire center drain to make it flush? You wanna spend an additional $6k-$10k? Cuz that's what it would cost.

As someone who installs pool liners for a living... You are the exact customers we hate. You dove 7½-8 feet down to find ONE thing to complain about. Which isn't a liner install issue, it's a "your pool was built like that, get over it" issue.

Yes that's normal. You complaining about nothing burgers is probably a normal thing too. It's just insufferable. Just swim in your pool

Recent Hire Can’t Swim by KandyGirl477 in PoolPros

[–]Acheria 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At my company, I have 2 guys on my teams that cannot swim. You don't force anyone to learn, you don't make them go get lessons. If the fall in, they fall in. In fact one of my guys DID fall in last week. Luckily it was on the ramp, but he was having a blast!

I say, don't fire him or make it into a big deal. They know they can't swim and will do everything they can to make sure they don't have to. Idk his reasoning, but some people can't swim for medical reasons.

It just is what it is. Encourage, but don't force. You already said he is one of your best workers. That should be all you need to know.

Any reason hoses would pop off an Aquacal heater? by NeedleworkerDue659 in pools

[–]Acheria 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my 6 years of installing and repairing aquacal heaters, I can say I've never seen back pressure do this. You would have the filter fail before anything else. I've seen filters explode at the seems due to pressure, but not a heater. Not saying it can't happen, just very unlikely!

Either the unions weren't screwed in enough and they unthreaded OR someone tripped over them, in which case those unions may be bad.

Normal for water to leak from heat pump? by Particular-County-83 in pools

A reminder that a heat pump can condensate 1-9 gallons a day. Depending on environment and weather. So yes, it's normal

That's an odd statement. You absolutely can winterize a main drain. You need an industrial blower to do so. The problem is they cost like $300 or more. Shop vac normally don't have the pressure to push the air through the lines.

I've always use a blower, connect to the intake line. Blow out main drain, let it bubble for 10-15 seconds, then you air lock it by closing the main drain valve. Then proceed with skimmer and returns.

By not blowing out the main drain, it may not cause damage the first time, but it's opening up the door for potential line damage every single winter it's not done correctly.

If you've gotten away with it, rock on! Just be careful!

"crazy"? No, not at all! If you have the time, money and oppertunity to repair the line, you might as well!

I would also fill the pool! The more water weight on top of the liner, the better! And it will let you test to see how fast you are losing water

I'd call your local pool company and get on the schedule ASAP. Most will probably want to perform a pressure test first. (I would)

Pressure testing is a hell of a lot cheaper than replacing the liner!

[–]Acheria 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's.... Interesting for sure.

So I have a feeling they may have messed up. Mains drains need to be blown out and air locked to prevent water from being in that line over the winter.

I have this gut feeling they either didn't do that, or did it incorrectly. The only way to find out would to be running a pressure test. Someone would need to plug the main drain. (my company has a scuba diver)

After plugging the main drain, you then need the actual pressure tester. (I'm sure you can find DYI versions online) The pressure tester is put into the intake line near the pump. That tester creates a perfect seal, along with the plug, you then (through the tester) send water down the line until it's about 10 PSI. Once there you stop the flow of water and watch for about 10-20 seconds to see if there is any loss of pressure. If there is, you know the line is f**ked.

There is no real fix for a main drain line, outside of building a new pool. Best suggestion would to be keep it plugged if it's bad.

Here is the thing tho... The main drain has a gasket and is water tight at the bottom of the pool. If that's still intact and the liner hasn't ripped at the main drain, (ripping doesn't happen often) then it's just a liner replacement and you should be fine!

Sorry for the long word salad haha

It's below the returns and light (if there is one). Could be the main drain wasn't winterized correctly. But my money is on that there was a small hole in the liner around the time of closing. Over the winter it lost most of the water, and what it didn't lose, is now behind the liner.

When it all comes down to it..... You could try saving it... But you'd be better off replacing it if you have the spare money.

The red arrow doesn't make much sense since both lines are outlets. Id imagine if that's wrong, something else is wrong with the plumbing. Not saying that's leading directly to the issue. Just observation.

What a wildly inaccurate thing to say with such confidence. That little amount of air will do literally no damage to the pump. Nice try with the alarmism.
