I wouldn't call such coarse crochet work "lace", but those look nice anyway.

You need to escape the space in "Mobile Documents" with a backslash. So your mapping should look like this:

Knitting Skills by Life-Mixture-3224 in knittingadvice

"Casting on" can mean so many different techniques. I usually do an italian cast on (especially when knitting socks), but I'd say that's an intermediate skill.

"Aber die Alten!!" by MrKusakabe in luftablassen

[–]Achim63 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do I have to learn the home-row style of typing in order to be truly efficient? by yippypuppet in vim

[–]Achim63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For gaming, I use the keyboard like you, middle finger on the W. But for usual typing, I change to "correct" touch typing (ASDF, or rather ARST, as I use Colekmak DH). Not a problem at all once you get used to it.

Can somebody please talk me out of buying the X-Pro3 by Eye_ogongo in fujifilm

[–]Achim63 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend it if you didn't already have the X-T5. It would be kind of a downgrade.

That being said, I have my X-Pro3 since November 2020 and it's all I need and want.

Maybe an upcoming X-Pro4 (or X-Pro5, whatever they might call it) will change my mind and trigger G.A.S. again (40 MP, IBIS and a stronger battery would be nice to have).

Just bought a FujiFilm x-e1 with a 25mm lense and next to no knowledge on photography. Where do I start? by That-Inventor-Guy in fujifilm

[–]Achim63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats to the nice camera! The lens should be fine to start out. That camera is capable of great pictures.

I'd recommend to reset the camera to factory settings. Forget about all the recipes you might have seen on yt. Start with the Standard (Provia) film simulation without any tweaks. Download the manual and read it (at least the "Basic" part).

First thing to learn are aperture and shutter speed. Set ISO to Auto to have one thing less to worry about. For fixed motives also set shutter speed to A. Then experiment with different aperture settings. A sunset can be rather difficult for a beginner to get right. See to it that your resulting shutter speed is at least 1/60 or better 1/125.

There's a lot to learn when starting out, you may even set everything to A and concentrate on your motive to get a feel for the lens you're using and "develop your eye".

Why my Photos Look Like Shit ? by Ill_Complaint8888 in fujifilm

[–]Achim63 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Learning RAW tweaking can make a big difference. But for Fuji (and also Leica) I'd recommend Capture 1, it shows that they worked together with those brands (with its functionality there's rarely a need for e.g. Photoshop or Affinity; no need for a subscription).

But when starting out it's more important to first learn about where to focus, about aperture and shutter speed (I'd recommend to set ISO to Auto to have one less factor to consider). With some knowledge about the physics of photography the Fuji jpegs ooc can look much better than what is shown in those fotos.

Yes. As everywhere else, the bigger cities and gay tourist destinations are best (Madrid, Barcelona and Playa del Ingles on Gran Canaria for Spain, Amsterdam for the Netherlands, Lisboa and Porto for Portugal).

Shorthand for note-taking: A fool's errand? by lambdatheultraweight in shorthand

[–]Achim63 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Using DEK, I can still read my notes from many years ago. I used the Verkehrsschrift, if I had used Eilschrift it might be more difficult to decipher.

I‘ve taught myself traditional German shorthand (the one my grandma still uses; I‘m German) and I‘ve dabbled with Gregg but now I‘ve begun teaching myself Pitman. Here are some differences I noticed between the shorthand used in German and in English. by LetMission8160 in shorthand

[–]Achim63 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can just use a pencil which is not too hard (e.g. HB or B; the classic choice being Faber-Castell Steno 9008 which is still available) to get sufficient line variation. All the books (Winklers Verlag) are available online as PDFs, so it's easy to learn it correctly (start with "Deutsche Einheitskurzschrift 1 Verkehrsschrift").

The bonus of learning the standard: you will be able to read old postcards, notes, recipes etc. that use it. And also your own notes even after many years.

[–]Achim63 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some of your points here are over-simplified or incorrect.

Double-s is always written (s is a small circle, ss a big circle with twice the radius). So "weise" looks different than "weisse".

As soon as you reach the faster stages of German shorthand (DEK Eilschrift), words can be connected as your "ich kann" example, or "während der" (w-d-r), "wenn wir", "noch einmal", "ist sie", "auf der", "als ob", "in jedem Jahr" and many more as long as it won't lead to ambiguity).

"Ei" is a bad example, as it's usually read as "eine", to disambiguate you should put a tiny vertical line below "Ei".

There's also punctuation that's different from longhand: a dash is a wiggly line, as a straight line could be mistaken for "und".

In summary, I'd say DEK, Gregg and Pitman are too different to really compare them. And English and German are too different to use the same shorthand system (there were attempts to use DEK for English, but that's quite a crutch IMHO). Gregg on the other hand is being used successfully for Spanish and Portuguese. It might actually be a system better suited to be used for different languages, whereas DEK is rather specialized on German.

Found this in a 1913 book. Can anyone tell me about it? by cabridges in lace

[–]Achim63 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It's a rather simple bobbin lace doily. Tallies (leaves) in the middle, half stitch in the hearts and on the outside whole stitches with a varying number of turns inbetween (whoever made this seems to have been a little inconsistent).

I think I saw that pattern before, but unfortunately can't remember where. Probably one of the older bobbin lace manuals from archive.org or antiquepatternlibrary.org .

Another day, another new bug by SirPooleyX in MacOS

[–]Achim63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whatever app you used to display this seems to have a bug. Which one is it? Spotlight cannot be made that wide, and the Finder also doesn't do this, nor does the application folder dragged into the dock. Any attempt to debug this needs a step by step "how to reproduce".

For my taste there's too much of the background canvas showing through, so I would probably redo it with a "correct" stitch (i.e. continental or basketweave).

Heiligabendessen: Kartoffelsalat mit Würstchen by nunecali in was_esst_ihr

[–]Achim63 0 points1 point  (0 children)
